Carson, CA – The first Filipino Winter Olympian Michael Christian Martinez will be given a plaque of recognition at the 116th Philippine Independence Day celebration at Veterans Park this Saturday, June 7 at 2 pm.
Mayor Protempore Elito Santarina said that the City of Carson is proud of the achievements of Martinez. “ He is a role model for the Filipino youth who want to set goals in their lives and inculcate in themselves the values of persistence and patience.
We take pride in encouraging sports development in the city which a healthy recreation for the youth and the families.” Santarina added.
Martinez who recently won a gold medal in Europe will compete in Taipeh this coming August.
Maria Teresa Martinez, Michael’s mother, said that they are both very thankful for the support of the Filipino Americans in Carson.
Headliners of the event are Geoff Eigenmann who is flying in from Manila courtesy of GMA International TV Network and Jo Awayan, a veteran singer and comedic performer. Awayan will have her own concert on June 28 at Noypitz bar in Glendale.
“I am proud to be part of this celebration. We are miles away from the Philippines and yet every year we are one as a people in this event. It is important to take in our heritage and culture,” Awayan added.
