(Second of two parts)In last week’s article, we discussed the revised procedure to avail of tax treaty benefits for dividend, interest, and royalty payments under Revenue Memorandum Order (RMO) No. 8-2017. Under the amended rules, a tax treaty relief application (TTRA) is no longer required and withholding agents can automatically apply the preferential tax treatment — lower tax rate or exemption — on such payments upon receiving the Certificate of Residence for Tax Treaty Relief (CORTT) Form from the non-resident.

4 PHL islands top World’s Friendliest list

Palawan, Cebu, Luzon and Boracay islands in the Philippines have claimed the top 4 spots of The World's Friendliest Islands, in a traveler survey conducted by Travel + Leisure magazine. Lav Diaz wins Best Director in Dublin

Lav Diaz has bagged another Best Director award for his film, “Ang Babaeng Humayo (The Woman Who Left),” this time from the Dublin Film Critics Circle (DFCC) Awards held at the Audi Dublin International Film Festival, in Ireland. Diaz previously won the Golden Lion prize at the 73 rd Venice Film Festival for the same film. The Dublin Film Critics Circle (DFCC) Awards jury composed of eight Irish movie critics from different publications in Ireland voted Diaz as the best director. The Filipino filmmaker received full marks for his 228 minute long drama film, reported ABSCBN News. In an interview Diaz said of his award, “It’s cool. Ibinabalita lang natin sa bayan, pangbawas kahit katiting man lang sa salimuot na dinaranas natin. (We are reporting it to the country, to diminish, no matter how slight, the complex crisis we’re now experiencing.)” “Ang Babaeng Humayo” tells the revenge tale of a school teacher who spent 30 years of her life inside the correctional facility for a crime she did not commit. First Jollibee in Europe to open in Italy

Jollibee Foods Corp (JFC) signed a deal with Singaporean company BlackBird Holdings to operate the first Jollibee store in Italy, the first store in Europe for the popular Filipino food chain. JFC Group president Jose Miñana Jr. said in media reports that the company would start in Italy where there are many Filipinos to mark its foray in Europe. “We’re looking at possibly Italy to be our (starting point) in Europe. We’re not in Europe yet. We will follow where the Pinoys are,” he said, adding that the company’s target Europe debut is between 2017 and 2018. BlackBird will own 25 percent of the proposed joint venture while the Jollibee group will own 75 percent through its international unit Golden Plate. The two companies have agreed to invest one million euros, of which up to 750 thousand euros will be contributed by Golden Plate, in proportion to its ownership in the business. Jollibee Foods Corporations strategy is to make a territorial franchise like in the Philippines, for Italy with the ability to develop and expand the brand in the market. The joint venture partnership will facilitate the entry and the opening of the first store will create the desired awareness for the Jollibee brand in the market.
