Embassy’s Chargé d’Affairés, Minister Patrick A. Chuasoto delivers his opening remarks at the FYLPRO DC Info session held at the Romulo Hall of the Philippine Embassy on 26 July 2016.

WASHINGTON, DC – FYLPRO alums Melissa Medina and RJ Diokno led the information session on the 5th FYLPRO Immersion Program on 26 July 2016 at the Romulo Hall of the Philippine Embassy.

Every year since its establishment in 2012 by former Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., the Filipino-American Youth Leadership Program (FYLPRO) brought 10 high-performing, next generation Filipino-Americans, known as FYLPRO delegates, on an all-expense paid immersion trip to the Philippines. The immersion program aims to equip and inspire the delegates to promote advocacies geared towards progress in the Philippines and engagement with the multi-faceted Filipino-American community in the United States.

FYLPRO alums RJ Diokno and Melissa Medina explained the immersion program, answered questions on the application process, and shared their insights on the overall FYLPRO experience.

In his opening remarks, the Embassy’s Chargé d’Affairés (CDA), Minister Patrick A. Chuasoto said, “The FYLPRO immersion experience endeavors to transform delegates in such a way that they can become effective leaders in their respective communities and give back to the Philippines at the same time.”

The information session provided the audience with an overview of the program and insights into the application process, which requires applicants to identify at least three Legacy projects that focus on the Philippines and Filipino communities abroad that foster further professional/leadership development such as social enterprises, philanthropic causes, or civic engagement initiatives. To date, at least 20 legacy projects are either active or completed by FYLPRO delegates.

“As far as the application process goes, my advice would be to try to have a very clear idea of what your story is, and that is probably going to tie into what your ideas are for your three legacy projects. I think that helps a lot when the committee comes to review your application, if you can tell a clear story and connect that to your legacy projects,” said RJ Diokno (FYLPRO ‘14).

Melissa Medina (FYLPRO ‘13) added, “One of the reasons why this program exists is to help serve as a catalyst for your ideas and what you want to do. You may have many different interests but we want to see some area of focus for your legacy projects.”

Now on its fifth year, FYLPRO has produced forty (40) high energy and dedicated individuals who are making great strides in their chosen fields. We are fortunate to have Melissa and RJ with us tonight to share their insights and answer your questions regarding the application process. I hope that after this session, you would seriously consider applying for the program and spread the word about FYLPRO,” CDA Chuasoto concluded.

In partnership with the Ayala Foundation Inc. (AFI) and the FYLPRO alumni association, the 5th FYLPRO hopes to continue to attract more high-performing, young Filipino-American leaders who will be among the movers and shakers in the Filipino-American community. Much of the participants’ expenses, including airfare, accommodations, local transportation, and meals will be shouldered by program sponsors.

The 5th FYLPRO immersion program will be held from 24 November to 02 December 2016 in the Philippines. Interested parties may submit their applications until 01 August 2016, midnight of Hawaii Standard Time. For more details, please visit www.fylpro.org.

Goldberg: EDCA is not about South China Sea

President Rodrigo R. Duterte welcomes United States of America Ambassador Philip Goldberg and Mr. Matthew Cenzer, deputy political counselor at the Music Room in Malacañan Palace on July 19.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – United States Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg on Thursday said the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) should not be seen in the light of the South China Sea issue. Goldberg said though five locations for U.S. military facilities in the Philippines have been identified in the EDCA, the security deal agreed between two allies remain to be for the strengthening of their relations. He said, the EDCA should be seen in terms of the mutual security relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines, wherein the Armed Forces of the Philippines can be modernized and will be able to conduct joint operations with their American counterparts as treaty allies. It would also pre-position U.S. military assets for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, he said. “People should understand that that’s the basis for our relationship, and that this is not aimed at China or any other claimants on the South China Sea issue. That should be resolved in a diplomatic and legal fashion,” he said. The Supreme Court upheld the legality of EDCA in January and dismissed appeals to reverse the ruling on Tuesday this week, a few hours before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Manila. Washington and Manila have agreed on five locations for U.S. military facilities in the Philippines, and among them is Read More …

Celebrities, well-off people next targets of PNP anti-drug drive

By Christopher Lloyd T. Caliwan Philippine National Police Chief Director-General Ronald dela Rosa answers questions during a press conference at Camp Crame, Wednesday. Three high-ranking PNP officials allegedly involved in illegal drugs tagged by President Duterte reported to Dela Rosa to clear their names. (MNS photo) MANILA  (PNA) – As part of its intensified anti-drug campaign, the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said it will look into affluent people and celebrities involved in illegal drugs. Southern Police District (SPD) Acting Director Sr. Supt. Tomas Apolinario said from the PNP’s anti-drug operations also aims to curb the prevalence of party drugs such as ‘ecstasy’. He recalled the five fatalities at the Closeup Forever Summer concert in Pasay City last May 21 who used methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and alcohol. MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, is a psychoactive drug used primarily as a recreational drug. Desired effects of MDMA include increased empathy, pleasure, and heightened sensations. With the incident, Apolinario said party and concert organizers are now coordinating with the police to ensure that their events will not be used as a venue for illegal drug trade as these are usually attended by wealthy youth and celebrities. Despite the deployment of civilian-clothed and uniformed policemen during concerts or parties, Apolinario admitted that is difficult to track down people who used drugs before going to an event. As a precautionary measure, Apolinario said that they will deploy drug-testing kits in the entrance of the event to test the suspicious actions of an individual. Meanwhile, Read More …

The senators are set to proceed to the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City to join their colleagues at the House of Representatives in hearing the first State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo R. Duterte at 4 p.m. Monday. (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday said he saw no reason why the House of Representatives would not pass the proposed Freedom of Information (FOI) following President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to have it implemented in the executive branch. In the Senate, Pimentel was confident that a more refined measure would be approved by the Senate committee on public information. He noted that the FOI bill was the pet measure of Senator Grace Poe, who he said wanted to retain the chairmanship of the committee. It was Poe who initiated that passage of the bill at the Senate but the same measure failed to get the approval of the House during the 16th Congress. “Kami sa Senate, nandyan si Senadora Grace Poe. ‘Yan po ang kanyang pet bill. At pinag-usapan nga namin kahapon din yan na kaya nga gusto nyang maging chairman ng public info committee, ire-refine nya ‘yung kanyang bill and she wants to make sure na kung ano ‘yung porma ‘yung pagkapasa last Read More …

Management, analysts and other users of financial statements almost always consider a company’s revenue as its key performance indicator. To stay competitive and increase revenue, companies may add flexibility and value to their products and service offerings — be it an enhancement in the price, additional services or guarantees or other add-ons in the contract terms. However, these diverse marketing strategies give rise to complexity in revenue recognition.
