The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles Area (UPAAGLA) will hold its Induction Dinner and Dance on August 29 at Glendale Embassy Suites to send deserving scholars in school in much the same way that it kept Armel Grace Lugod’s future ensured through the kindheartedness of the Philippines’ top university alumni. Lugod was a high school valedictorian who went to major in architecture in the University of the Philippines in Mindanao.
The nonprofit UPAAGLA whose memberships are representatives of what good educations means in terms of having the right tools for competitiveness in life hopes “to fund the education of more deserving low income students especially in the wake of disasters like Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines”.
Tots “Climb” Mt. Everest at VBS: Close to 100 children had their vacation season highlighted by a unique summer experience of being exposed early to spiritual values as more than 30 members of the Climbing Crew joined hands in the annual Vacation Bible School sponsored by Cornerstone Christian Fellowship of Orange County. This month, it will be the indigenous children in Tecate, Mexico who will experience the rare summer treat as the team reaches out to them as they have done in previous years.
The theme of the evening is “U.P. Balik Tanaw” – a nostalgic journey for the membership body, which spans from the 1950s to present day. The event will also provide the products of the most prestigious public university in the Philippines “to reconnect with former classmates and enjoy the camaraderie and reminisce the glorious days of their life in college”.
The evening will also be an occasion to install in office the officers who will steer the organization through the challenges of 2015-2017 which will include: President Arnel Jouquin, President-elect Mutch Cariño, 1st Vice President Nati Mercado, 2nd Vice-President Yvee Guevarra, Recording Secretary Angie Alvarez, Corresponding Secretary Maribel Catala, Treasurer Gil Guinto, Assistant Trasurer Melette Lampino, Auditor Dick Cu, and PRO Bobby Canseco.
Serving in the board are Annie Nepomuceno, Benny Uy, Bob Shroder, Carina Pilapil, Ethel Rubio, Evelyn Andamo,, Ivy Bautista, Jess Española, Maning Rivera, Maria Drees, Mario Kasilag, Sonny Gancayco, Steve Firme, Tina Escueta, Tish Sigman and Dr. Fely De La Cruz.

The entertainment portion of the event will be hosted by Direk Maning Rivera and Yvee Guevarra featuring Bob Shroder, Ed and Annie Nepomuceno and other guests.
UPAAGLA’s principal mission “is to link, build, network, and sustain lifelong relationships amongst alumni from various UP schools, particularly those residing in the Greater Los Angeles area.” It’s vision is “to enlighten UP Alumni in the Greater Los Angeles area and elsewhere to share their current resources, talents, and efforts with their Alma Mater and to give back and support the University at large.”
UPAAGLA has produced successful fundraisers by sponsoring two world renowned UP alumni concert artists “The Madrigal Singers” and “The UP Concert Chorus” and the Barona Casino Turnaround Trip and the Annual Lantern Parade.
The University of the Philippines whose successful graduates could be found in the different sectors of the Philippines was founded by the American colonial government on June 18, 1908. It was an institution of learning conceived for the Filipinos by virtue of Act No.1870 of the 1st Philippine Legislature which seeks to provide “advanced instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences and arts, and to give professional and technical training to eligible students regardless of age, sex, nationality, religious belief and political affiliation”. UP has institutional autonomy as the country’s national university under Republic Act No. 9500.
