MANILA (Mabuhay) – The ruling Liberal Party (LP) on Wednesday formally selected former Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II as its presidential candidate for the 2016 national elections.
The nomination was held during the National Executive Council (NECO) meeting of the party held at its headquarters in Balay, Cubao.
Present at the NECO meeting were LP chairman President Benigno Aquino III, LP president Joseph Emilio Abaya, and vice-chairmen Senate President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr.
Aquino had previously endorsed Roxas as his anointed successor.
In a NECO resolution, the LP recognized Roxas’ “impeccable and untarnished 20 years of track record in governance and public service, and has proven integrity, competence and experience to lead the Philippines as its next President.”
The NECO also granted Roxas full authority to nominate and select his running mate, as well as the senatorial candidates of the LP.
“In continuing Daang Matuwid, the Liberal Party’s presidential candidate should be supported by a vice president who has the integrity, experience and competence necessary to lead the country,” the resolution read.
The ruling party’s vice-presidential candidate and senatorial slate, meanwhile, will be announced on Monday, October 5. (MNS)
