Pacquiao falls short, Mayweather still undefeated

Rod Mijares SportsWriter Balita Media Manny Pacquiao throws a punch but doesn’t his target as he fails to beat Floyd Mayweather, Jr. during their welterweight WBO, WBC and WBA (Super) title fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. (MNS Photo) May 2, 2015: The fight finally concluded. The result was expected. Boxing analysts were right. Mayweather won by a unanimous decision and still clings to his unblemished record that now stands at 48-0 after defeating Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38KO) in a tactical fashion and unified the world welterweight championship titles and captured WBC’s handcrafted emerald belt. Judge Glenn Feldman and Judge Burt Clements have identical scores of 116-112 in favor of Mayweather winning all rounds except round 4, 6, 9 and 10. Whereas, Judge Dave Moretti scored it 118-110 with Pacquiao only winning round 4 and 6. The fight of the century did not live up to the hype leading to the match. Mayweather did what was expected of him, did what he normally does, jabbing, counter-punching, clinching, dancing and running away when an opponent was getting the upper-hand. “He was moving around too much, it wasn’t easy throwing punches at him. If he would ‘ve stayed in one place then I could’ve thrown punches. I was cutting him and countering. I wanted to fight,” Pacquiao said. Pacquiao’s preparation for three months and strategy formulated with Coach Roach were not enough to win the fight. He was simply out-smarted, out-boxed and out-played by Mayweather. “I knew he was going to push Read More …

By Nick Perry Cilacap, Indonesia (AFP) Monday 4/27/2015 – Led by the hand through a scrum of reporters to an Indonesian prison island, the six-year-old Filipino looked confused and frightened as he made one of his final visits to his mother before her execution. During the visit to Nusakambangan Island, Filipina maid Mary Jane Veloso gently explained to six-year-old Mark Darren and her second son, 12-year-old Mark Danielle, that she would not be coming home. “She tried to explain again,” Veloso’s elder sister Marites Veloso-Laurente told AFP during an interview in Cilacap, the port town that is the gateway to the island. “If Mumma does not go home, just think Mumma is in heaven.” As the clock ticks down on the execution by firing squad of eight foreign drug convicts, heartbroken relatives who have fought for years to save their loved ones are rushing to say final farewells. The convicts, who also include nationals from Australia, Brazil and Nigeria, all recently lost clemency appeals to President Joko Widodo. They could be put to death as soon as Tuesday after they received official notification of their executions at the weekend. Veloso’s two sons travelled with their family—some of whom had never flown—from an impoverished community north of Manila to hear a message almost impossible for them to take in. Veloso, 30, was convicted of trafficking heroin into Indonesia in 2009, but says her only crime was to fall victim to international drug gangs who are now threatening to kill her family Read More …

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AFP) Monday 4/27/2015 – Indonesian President Joko Widodo is “sympathetic” about the plight of a Filipina facing death for drug trafficking and has promised to look into her case, a spokesman for Philippine President Benigno Aquino said Monday after he made a personal appeal. While the comments seemed to indicate a faint prospect of reprieve for Mary Jane Veloso, the Indonesian leader is seen as extremely unlikely to change course on the executions which he has insisted for months are essential to halting a national drugs crisis. Veloso, a 30-year-old single mother of two boys, is due to face an Indonesian firing squad on Tuesday. She is among eight foreigners facing execution in Indonesia, which has come under international pressure to spare them. Aquino made his appeal in person on the sidelines of the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) being held this year in Malaysia, his spokesman Herminio Coloma said. “President Aquino talked with President Widodo earlier this morning and appealed for humanitarian consideration for Mary Jane Veloso, who was apparently duped into being an unwitting carrier of illegal drugs,” Coloma said in a text message. “(Aquino) said President Widodo was sympathetic and was consulting with the Indonesian Attorney General on the legal issues.” Coloma said Widodo promised to discuss the issue again later on Monday, when the summit that started in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur in the morning shifts to the resort island of Langkawi. Asked if there was Read More …

She grew her $200 investment into $10,000 in less than a year; and grew her fashion company without any fashion background nor connection. “I have been debunking myths about the fashion business since I started. And I’m proud of that,” said Marj Carlet Edmonds, owner of Carlet Edmonds, a scarves and swimsuit cover up manufacturing company. Not having any fashion background, Edmonds set out to learn everything she can in the 6 months that she spent researching online, dedicating 3 hours each night, from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. in front of the computer. The Filipina immigrant who grew up in Hawaii said she knew she had three things going for her – heart, drive and tenacity. “I couldn’t let anyone tell me ‘no.’ I’ve always liked fashion and I knew I couldn’t just give it up just because I did not go to school for it. I had to know what I was getting myself into,” said the woman behind the fastest growing brand in Central Valley, CA. “I would read up on everything, from bloggers, to fashion people, to big designers, to sewers, anything and everything. Time is money, money is time. I had time. I didn’t have money but I used my time to research.” It is through this research that Edmonds was able to make her first connection in the fashion industry. “I have been debunking myths about the fashion business since I started. A journey back to life

“What would you do if God gave you a second chance?” This is the question Filipina-American author Karen Henson Jones posts in her book, “Heart of Miracles,” chronicling her near-death experience and the struggles she had to face as she journeyed back to life. “Would you change your old life? Would you love the same things you used to love, want the same things you used to want? Would you believe in the same things you never believed in before?” These questions she asks in her book are the same questions we can reflect on this Easter season. After all, for Christians like myself, Christ rising from the dead signals a rebirth, new hope, new life. For Jones, who has a condition called Long QT Syndrome, a type of Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome, her journey back to life began when she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 30, while working a high-powered a job in London. In “Heart of Miracles,” she describes her year of long hours losing count of how many e-mails she responded to on a daily basis, balancing spreadsheets in the “hundreds of millions of dollars,” long hours in front of the computer, meetings. While these tasks, she said, earned her a “respectable paycheck” every two weeks, she wondered if there was more to life than that. She was, in a way, forced to take these random musings more seriously when her life started changing, causing her to endure much pain, physically, mentally and Read More …

Conquering New York with love and flowers

NEW YORK – “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere…,” goes the song originally sung by Frank Sinatra that has since been sung by many, even in karaoke bars worldwide. But while others can only sing it, Filipino entrepreneur Dennis Josue is living it. “I am most proud of the fact that I am not only living here in New York; but also thriving,” he said in a recent interview at Fantasia Floral Design, a flower shop he owns and runs in the East Village. The city is often referred to as the “concrete jungle” – busy, bustling with activity, intimidating and known for harsh winters and the perceived I-don’t-care attitude of the people. But florist Josue, who migrated from the Philippines in 1983, cares; and with this Filipino trait of caring, is able to conquer the urban complex with love and flowers. “I love flowers! I love looking at them, working with them. They never complain or talk back to you,” he joked. “They’re very pleasant to see. Seeing them makes me happy.” In the Philippines Josue graduated from San Beda College with a degree in Economics. But eager to pursue his passion for the performing arts, he also took classes at the University of the Philippines School of Dance, with a minor in voice training. After graduation, encouraged by his sister who was already living in New York, Josue packed his bags and the dream to perform in one of the greatest cities on the Read More …
