Aquino III and His Holiness Pope Francis pose with the Philippine delegation for a group photo opportunity at the Sala del Tronetto of the Apostolic Palace following the private audience on Friday (December 04). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III said that the passing of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will likely prevent the growth of extremism in the country, a threat that has become imminent following the increase in local bandit groups pledging support for ISIS. In a press briefing, Aquino who was Italy for a state visit, mentioned that an official in the Vatican City praised the country’s push for the BBL, as it is being seen as a driver for peace. “I think it was the Secretary of State of the Vatican who was saying that we can serve as an example of how to reach out to our Muslim brothers and achieve peace, and especially in the spirit where extremism is such a threat worldwide, that example might be useful to others to build upon as a response to the radicalization that is happening,” he said. Aquino said the BBL can prevent local bandit groups like the Abu Sayyaf from becoming full-blown extremist groups. “We also mentioned that the Abu Sayyaf, for instance, claims that they were once part of the Al Qaeda network. Now they claim that they are part of the ISIS network, and if there is another group that comes up, I assume they’ll also be—they Read More …

Christmas Season heightens benevolence

A quest for justice

The quest for justice being sought by family and friends of Jeffrey “Jennifer Laude, a Filipino transgender slain last year by a 19-year old American serviceman, is far from over. There appears to be a slim chance that the Laude family will get the kind of justice that they hope to get, in spite the recent conviction of Laude’s assailant. Laude was killed inside the bathroom of a motel in Olongapo City by Lance Cpl. Joseph Scott Pemberton, a US Marine, who mistook the former as a woman. Laude’s lifeless naked body was found by motel employees, with her head leaning on the outer edge of a toilet bowl. The Olongapo Regional Trial Court Branch 74 convicted this week Pemberton for the death of Laude and sentenced him to six to 12 years imprisonment for homicide. The Judge also ordered that Pemberton be transferred immediately to the National Bilibid Prison (NBP), away from his comfortable prison quarters in Camp Aguinaldo. Pemberton’s trip to the NBP was however temporarily halted by the court as a result of diplomatic issues raised by American officials who were with the convicted American soldier during the sentencing. In refusing to hand over Pemberton to members of the Philippine National Police (PNP),  US officials claimed that under Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), American soldier convicted of a crime in the Philippines shall be detained in a facility agreed upon by the governments of both countries. They were also claiming that a provision in the VFA has guaranteed Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – File a complaint. This was the reaction of Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz on claims by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte that a priest sexually abused him when he was young. Cruz said that while he understands Duterte’s manner of speaking, for which the presidential aspirant has drawn flak, the mayor’s “serious” claim against clergymen is another matter altogether, and that Duterte should file a case against the abusers. “I think he should not just let go of this like that. Kung talagang reformer siya, he should follow through. Hindi ‘yung sasabihing, “Wag na, kawawa naman sila.’ Oh, come on, walang ganiyanan,” he said. Earlier, Cruz scored Duterte for his profanity-laced declaration speech last Monday, saying “Delikado ang mga ganitong nilalang.” Duterte came under fire among netizens for his comments about being stuck in traffic during last January’s Papal Visit, when it took him five hours to travel to the airport because of road closures. The head of the CBCP, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, also criticized Duterte. On Duterte’s penchant for expletives and the audience’s reaction, Villegas said: “Vulgarity is corruption. When we find vulgarity funny, we have really become beastly and barbaric as a people. When a revered and loved and admired man like Pope Francis is cursed by a political candidate and the audience Read More …

Asked if Poe is natural-born, Santiago said, “No, she’s not. I’m sorry to say.” “Maski ni-adopt siya, or ni-register sa Department of Social Welfare as a foster child, ‘di siya natural-born,” she said, adding that such status would require knowing that the biological parents or relatives are Filipino. Poe, a foundling, has yet to identify her biological parents. She was found at the Jaro Cathedral in 1968 and was later adopted by actors Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces.
