PNP chief Marquez: Families of SAF 44 to continue receiving govt assistance

Members of women’s group Gabriela join religious and civil society organizations in forming a human chain along E. Rodriguez Avenue in Quezon City on Friday to commemorate the 40 days of the Mamasapano incident. The activity was one of several events calling for peace in Mindanao. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The families of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos killed in a clash with various armed groups in Mamasapano last January will continue receiving assistance from the government even after the change in the Philippine National Police’s leadership, PNP chief Director General Ricardo Marquez said Tuesday. Marquez said aid continues to pour in for the police commandos’ family members since he assumed office last week. “Ang alam ko marami na talagang napaabot sa mga naulila ng SAF 44. Marami pang tulong na parating kasi simula nang ako ay mag-assume as chief PNP, nakakatanggap pa ako ng mga text kung ano ung pamamaraan kung paano sila makakatulong sa pamilya ng SAF 44,” he said. Marquez was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III earlier this month as the permanent replacement for PNP officer-in-charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina who retired on July 16. In accordance with Aquino’s orders, Marquez said the PNP will continue to provide not just financial assistance to the fallen SAF troopers’ families, but also other forms of aid for their children, who might need help with their studies or search for jobs. “[Kung] sakaling naghahanap sila (mga anak ng SAF 44) ng trabaho at iba pang Read More …

Probe on ‘White House’ controversy will continue – PNP chief Marquez

President Benigno S. Aquino III witnesses the change of command ceremony of Philippine National Police with former PNP Officer-in-Charge and Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina ceding to newly appointed Chief Police Director Ricardo Marquez the symbolic Transformation Torch during the PNP Change of Command Ceremony and Retirement Honors for P/DDG Leonardo Espina at the Multi-Purpose Center, Camp Crame in Quezon City on Thursday (July 16). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ricardo Marquez on Tuesday assured the public that investigation on the alleged anomalies surrounding the so-called “White House” in Camp Crame will continue even if it has now become his official residence. Marquez said the Ombudsman has meted out administrative sanctions in connection with the donations gathered for the White House’s construction in 2013. At the time, the occupant of the two-story residence was then-PNP Chief Director General Alan Purisima. In late June, the Ombudsman ordered the dismissal of Purisima and 10 other police officials over another controversy – entering into an allegedly anomalous contract with service courier Werfast Documentary Agency (Werfast) in 2011. “Nagkaroon na ng administrative decision ang Ombudsman. ‘Yung mga pinaniniwalaang sangkot doon ay nabigyan na ng kaparusahan at ang alam ko ay parang administrative remedies ang ginagawa ngayon,” Marquez said. Asked if the investigation on the White House’s controversy will continue, Marquez replied in the affirmative. The White House landed in the headlines last year after reports surfaced that its construction cost reportedly reached around P20 million. PNP director Read More …

VP Binay spokesman: Trillanes’ bullying must be stopped

Vice President Jejomar Binay walks among his supporters at the Makati City hall on Monday. People gathered at the city hall grounds to show their support for the older Binay and his son, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, who was earlier served another suspension by the Ombudsman. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The spokesman of Vice President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday defended the filing of a P200-million libel suit against his political detractors, as it singled out Senator Antonio Trillanes IV for supposedly “bullying” Binay. “The complaint filed by the Vice President against certain parties including Senator Trillanes is a legitimate redress of grievance. This also shows that the rule of law is non-negotiable,” lawyer Rico Quicho, Binay’s spokesperson for political affairs, said in a statement. “It is about time that Senator Trillanes’ bullying and clear arrogance of power be reviewed and stopped by a court of competent jurisdiction after a fair and impartial administration of justice,” he added. In his complaint filed against Trillanes and 11 others before the Makati Regional Trial Court, Binay said the defendants colluded to malign his name and reputation to force him not to run in the 2016 presidential elections. Trillanes, one of the three senators leading the Senate investigation on the corruption allegations against Binay, said the complaint filed by the Vice President is an indication that the public official was now in panic mode. “Nagpapakita lang ito na nagpapanic na si VP Binay kaya sinusubukan na lang niyang takutin ang mga taong umuusig Read More …

SCE crews restore power in Long Beach

By SCE Newsroom Staff SCE crews help restore power to downtown Long Beach. Photo: Ernesto Sanchez/SCE Southern California Edison (SCE) crews have restored service to all customers affected by the Long Beach outage. Some customers who had been on SCE-provided generators have had their power transferred back from the generator to the SCE system. Additional outages may occur as a result of the current rain storm. If you are still without power, please reset your circuit breakers. If your power remains off, call SCE Customer Service at 1-800-655-4555. Representatives can help walk you through the circuit breaker procedure or identify if another issue exists. Once power is fully restored to the area, final repairs on the system will continue for the near future until the system is returned to its full operational capacity, so residents may continue to see SCE crews working in the area. SCE thanks the city of Long Beach, and its dedicated staff, for its cooperation during this incident, and for the especially important safety efforts of first responders in the Long Beach Fire and Police departments. The outages began at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday. They appear to be the result of failure of equipment in the underground system in the downtown area where several underground vaults were damaged. PHL to base jets, frigates near China-claimed waters

The Philippines said the military assets will be located in Subic Bay, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) from a shoal off the northern Philippines controlled by Chinese forces, said Arsenio Andolong, the defense department’s public affairs chief. Manila, Philippines (AFP) – The Philippines plans to station fighter jets and frigates on a former US naval base facing the South China Sea, where it is engaged in a maritime row with China, a defence official said Monday. They will be located in Subic Bay, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) from a shoal off the northern Philippines controlled by Chinese forces, said Arsenio Andolong, the defense department’s public affairs chief. The Armed Forces of the Philippines “will use portions of Subic for the new assets coming in like the FA-50 (jets) and the new vessels that are arriving,” Andolong told AFP. “They (the Subic facilities) are ideal: it has a deep-water port, the runways are perfect for the FA-50,” he added. Manila said last week it would reopen Subic Bay – one of the US’s largest overseas bases until it was shut down more than two decades ago – and station Filipino military assets there for the first time. Andolong said the military has leased part of Subic Bay for 15 years and plans to use it as a base for new equipment that will be bought over the next few years as part of a modernization program. The first pair of a dozen FA-50 fighter jets are scheduled to be delivered Read More …

Angry Arum slams Pacquiao for skipping rehab

By Daniel HICKS Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao (right) poses with the head of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) Setya Novanto during a courtesy call in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday. Pacquiao earlier visited convicted Filipino drug mule Mary Jane Veloso at an Indonesian prison. (MNS photo) Macau, Macau (AFP)  – Veteran boxing promoter Bob Arum has blasted the injured Manny Pacquiao for missing a planned rehab visit to his doctor and says he has no idea when “Pacman” might return to the ring. After watching Argentina’s Cesar Cuenca beat China’s “IK” Yang to lift the IBF junior welterweight title in Macau’s Cotai Arena on Saturday night, the 83-year-old Top Rank chief Arum responded angrily when asked when Pacquiao might fight again. “As far as I’m concerned he’s not an active fighter,” said Arum, adding that Pacquiao had “not been acting very professionally.” Pacquiao had surgery on May 7 to repair a torn right shoulder rotator cuff sustained in the unanimous points defeat against Floyd Mayweather in the richest fight of all time in Las Vegas five days earlier. But Arum confirmed the Philippines congressman cancelled a planned check-up with his surgeon Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles on July 4. “Pacquiao was supposed to come over to see the doctor and for some reason he decided to cancel it,” Arum told AFP. “So he’s not acting very professionally.” Just days after he had been due to see the surgeon, Pacquiao instead travelled to Indonesia in a Read More …

Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada turnover a key to the city of Manila to President of the French Republic Francois Hollande during the wreath laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument in Manila (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Former President and incumbent Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada on Monday said he wants to hear the platforms first of Senator Grace Poe and Vice President Jejomar Binay before throwing his support to either of them in 2016. In a weekly news form in Manila, Estrada said platforms weigh more to him that his close ties with Poe and Binay. “At the end of the day, titignan ko kung sino ang higit na makatutulong sa higit na nakararami, for the greatest good of the greatest number—the masses,” said Estrada, whose pro-poor stance catapulted him to the presidency in 1998. He also reiterated that he is torn between Poe and Binay as both are close to him. “Si Vice President Binay kumpareng buo ko. Si Senator Grace, inaanak ko sa kasal, anak ba ng kaibigang matalik ko,” he said, referring to Poe’s father, the late actor Fernando Poe Jr. “Mahihirapan ako but I have to decide,” Estrada said. “Kung sino ang nakikita kong maganda ang plataporma, ‘yun ang susuportahan ko sa huli. I owe it to the people of the Philippines. Hindi dahil sa kumpare o inaanak ko [ay] susuportahan na agad. Kung sino ang makapagbibigay ng makabubuti sa bayan, doon ako pupunta,” he added.
