Aquino wants update on how gov’t is helping WWII ‘comfort women’

TOKYO, Japan) President Benigno S. Aquino III views the message of his mother former President Corazon C. Aquino written on November 13, 1986 at the Guest Room of the Nippon Press Center Building for the Press Event with the Japan National Press Club (JNPC) on Friday (June 05, 2015) during his State Visit in Japan. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III will seek an update on how the government is helping Filipinas who became victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II. The government should continue ensuring the welfare of Filipino “comfort women,” Aquino said in an interview on Thursday in Japan. The President is on a four-day state visit to Japan that began on Tuesday. “It is really incumbent upon our government to take care of our own. I will assure you, as soon as we get back home, I will have an update on exactly how we have helped them [comfort women], how we have helped our own,” the President told Filipino reporters covering his Tokyo visit. The “tragic” experiences of the comfort women are “part of our national history and the shared story of our nation,” Aquino added. “The important thing is they are our mothers, our sisters… They’re our aunts,” he said. Efforts have already been undertaken “to settle this matter” between the Philippines and Japan even before he assumed the presidency, Aquino noted. “But, again, we recognize nothing that we can do today completely erases that which happened Read More …

Belmonte ready to resign as speaker if Bangsamoro bill ‘bribery’ proven true

Various organizations lead by Nationalist Advocates for Filipino Ideology and Jesus Is Lord Fellowship hold a prayer rally at Luneta on Sunday against the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). The group said the BBL subverts the country’s sovereignty and will create a wedge among Moros, Lumads and Christians in Mindanao. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Quezon City Rep. Feliciano Belmonte Jr. is ready to resign as House speaker if allegations that lawmakers received bribes from a Chinese fugitive to vote in favor of the Bangsamoro Basic Law are proven true. “If there is even one centavo na nanggaling dun sa sinasabing (payola) which is a complete lie, I am ready to step down and resign as speaker,” Belmonte said. He was referring to a report by the Standard daily stating that Malacañang used P440 million from alleged Chinese criminal Wang Bo to bribe House members to approve the controversial bill. “This is an absolute lie. In so far as trying to connect it to the BBL or House, 100 percent lie yan kaya nga sabi ko I’m willing to resign if there is any truth to that,” the House leader said. “On absolutely no basis whatsoever, idinamay yung House. Sasabihin isang trak ng pera dadalhin dun e meron pang tao dun, tignan mo naman how ridiculous that is tapos unnamed source kaya minabuti ko na paimbestigahan na yan,” he added. Belmonte said the House committee on good governance, headed by Pampanga Rep. Oscar Rodriguez, will start its inquiry Read More …

Aquino laments mudslinging among 2016 bets

Senator Grace Poe (left) reverses roles with news photographers, taking the picture of newly elected Press Photographers of the Philippines officers shortly after their oath taking Monday at the Senate. Poe led the oath taking as chairman of the Committee for Public Information and Mass Media. (MNS Photo) TOKYO (Mabuhay) – President Aquino lamented the mudslinging among today’s politicians and appealed to them to them to engage instead in intelligent debate. Aquino made the comment when he was asked for his views on the word war between the camps of Vice-President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe. The President said politicians tend to “overreact.” “If I can appeal as a citizen… We, for instance, (in the) LP (Liberal Party) have a dream. We move our politics beyond personalities and to issues… parang each party takes a stand on a particular issue and win the votes on that matter. Parang when you elect this particular party, you expect this system of governance, you expect this type of decision-making and so on and so forth.” “At this early, when it’s, in a sense, parang black propaganda that is at the forefront, the appeal is – especially for those who are younger than us – can we not help them change the system to something better and bring the debate to a more intelligent and studied level, rather than going to… ‘di ba? I won’t describe na lang the particular method. But I guess the better question is: ‘Why are you so overreacting? Read More …

VP Binay: I don’t ridicule adoptees

Vice President Jejomar Binay addresses the crowd during the 36th National Conference of Employers at Marriott hotel in Pasay City on Friday. Binay told the business community his family only has five bank accounts, denying the Anti Money Laundering Council report that he owns about 242 bank accounts. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Vice President Jejomar Binay claims he was not aware that the issue of her birth will be raised against Senator Grace Poe. In an interview with reporters in Biliran Thursday, Binay said he is not the kind of person who will ridicule adopted children. “Alam mo may bahagi yata ng pananalita ni Mareng Grace tungkol sa pagkakaampon sa kanya. Ako, si Jojo Binay, kukutyain ko iyong mga ganyan? Hindi si Jojo Binay iyan,” he said. He added that like Poe, he is an adopted child but unlike the senator, his adoptive parents were not rich. “E kasi ako, inampon din lang ako ng tiyo ko. Mabuti pa nga si Mareng Grace, gumanda ang buhay niya. Iyong pagkakaampon sa akin e ako ang namamalengke, kumukuha ng kaning-baboy. Hindi si Jojo Binay ang mangdudusta sa mga naaapi,” he said. Poe is the adopted child of actress Susan Roces and the late actor Fernando Poe, Jr. Some say she is not eligible to run for higher office because it is not known if she is a natural-born Filipino citizen as she does not know her parents. But it seems Binay has no plan to tell his spokesperson to stop raising Read More …

Rift between Sharon, KC goes deeper than ‘sexy poses’

Sharon Cuneta (MNS photo) Are Sharon Cuneta and daughter KC Concepcion not on good terms? This was the question among many followers of the screen veteran when she, in replies to comments on her Facebook page, hinted that there has long been a “wedge between me and my daughter.” The apparent admission came a day after Cuneta expressed her frustration over a sexy photo of Concepcion, saying she is hurt every time she sees the 30-year-old actress in daring pictorials and pointing out that these have been repeated instances. Over the weekend, Cuneta hinted that Concepcion’s “unnecessary too-sexy poses” are not her only frustrations. KC Concepcion (MNS Photo)33335638795 Replying to a follower who said he does not see anything wrong with Concepcion posing sexy, Cuneta said: “I wish all this was just about sexy poses. Thanks anyway. God bless.” Another follower advised Cuneta not to let “bashers” affect her relationship with Concepcion, her only child with ex-husband Gabby Concepcion. The fan added: “I love both of you and I feel sad if you have tampuhan with your daughter.” What Cuneta said next triggered speculation of an ongoing rift between them. “Bashers have never been the reason for driving a wedge between me and my daughter,” she said. “The reasons are sad and not made public as they are personal and have been going on for way longer than people will ever know. Thank you so much for your concern, though.” Another fan, who introduced herself as a mother of three, Read More …

PHL Japan lash out at China island building

By Natsuko Fukue President Aquino meets with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Asahi-no-Ma Room of the Akasaka State Guest House during the two countries’ summit meeting on Thursday. Aquino called on Japan to form a united front against China’s increasing assertiveness.(MNS Photo) Tokyo, Japan (AFP)  – Japan and the Philippines lashed out Thursday at Chinese land reclamation in the South China Sea, where Beijing is building infrastructure some suspect will be used by its military. In a joint statement after their summit, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Philippine President Benigno Aquino criticised dredging in the sea, a busy shipping lane, where the United States says Beijing has built 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of artificial islands. “Both countries reaffirm their strong commitment to ensuring maritime safety and security, including in the South China Sea, which is a vital element for peace and prosperity of the region,” the statement said. They “share serious concern on unilateral actions to change the status quo in the South China Sea including large-scale land reclamation and building of outposts” in violation of a 2002 regional agreement, it said. Aquino has passionately courted Japan, along with the United States, to help serve as a counterbalance to China’s claims to almost the entirety of the sea, through which a huge chunk of global shipping passes, and which could harbor oil and gas reserves. Parts of the sea are also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei. The statement called for “peaceful settlement” of disputes, Read More …
