VP Binay accused of converting housing for urban poor to hotel for guests

Representatives from the Boy Scout of the Philippines national executive board for the year 2011 (L-R) Senior Vice President and Asst. Secretary HUDCC Atty. Wendel Avisado, Secretary General Rizal Pangilinan, International Commissioner Dale Corvera and Vice President for Visayas Atty. Arthur Umbac attend the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on the Boyscouts of the Philippines and Alphaland deal. (MNS photo) MANILA, Apr 16 (Mabuhay) – Lawyer Renato Bondal on Thursday accused Vice President Jejomar Binay of converting housing meant for the urban poor to a hotel for his guests. During the continuation of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee hearing on alleged anomalies involving Binay, Bondal also accused the vice president of earning from the Makati Friendship Suites project. Si Vice President Binay ay kumita sa Friendship Suite. ‘Yang proyektong y’an para sa mahihirap na taga-Makati. Hindi nangyari yan, ginawa pong hotel sa mga bisita sa Makati,” Bondal said. The lawyer said the Makati City government, under Binay’s leadership, allocated P17.2 million through an ordinance in 2002 to buy three buildings to serve as housing for fire victims. Bondal claimed these buildings were renovated for P242 million, way beyond the actual renovation cost of P47 million. The lawyer further alleged that after the buildings were renovated, Binay used these to provide free accommodations for guests from Makati’s sister cities. “Hindi masama makipagkaibigan, na ipakita ang aming lungsod, pero libre ho ‘yan, gastos ng Makati. Ang tanong: Sumikat ho ba ang aming lungsod? Si Binay lang po ang sumikat. Ginamit para sa political Read More …

Grace Poe leaps forward in SWS ‘presidentiable’ survey

Senator Grace Poe on Tuesday presents a copy of the Philippine National Police Board of Inquiry (BOI) report and discusses the findings of the Senate committee on public order that she heads. Poe affirmed most of the BOI’s findings and stressed President Aquino’s responsibility on the incident. (MNS photo) MANILA, Apr 16 (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe is one of the strong contenders for the presidency if elections were held today as the latest survey by pollster Social Weather Stations showed she has narrowed the gap between her and first-placer Vice President Jejomar Binay. The SWS survey conducted March 20 to 23 showed second-placer Poe enjoying a big increase from her previous 21 percent rating in December to 31 percent in March. Binay remained on top with 36 percent, a one-percent drop from the 37 percent in December. Binay had suffered huge drops in his satisfaction ratings since he was linked to corruption charges. His camp has denied the allegations, saying these were politically motivated. On the other hand, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was third place in the survey, also surging ahead to 15 percent in March from 5 percent in December. Poe and Duterte have yet to announce their plans to run for president in 2016. The survey had asked respondents to name up to three people who they thought should succeed President Benigno Aquino III. Results of the survey were posted Thursday on SWS’ media partner BusinessWorld. Duterte tied with Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II, whose score Read More …

Justice for sale?

If Senator Antonio Trillanes’ exposé is true that some cases in the Court of Appeals are being decided not on merits but on how much a person facing a lawsuit is willing to pay a judge to get a favorable ruling is both alarming and despicable. In response, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines said it will initiate its own investigation regarding the alleged bribery. Trillanes himself is facing libel charges filed by suspended Makati Mayor Junjun Binay before the Makati Regional Trial Court after stating that two CA justices allegedly received P25 million each from the Binay camp. The Supreme Court refused to be drawn in the bribery scandal. Supreme Court Chief Justice Sereno promised to initiate a probe if Senator Trillanes will come up with hard evidence against erring CA justices. She also shut down the proposal of Trillanes for the Senate to initiate a separate investigation. But Sereno said only the Supreme Court has the power to investigate erring justices or judges suspected to be involve in bribery. It is often said that a corrupt judicial system not only violate the basic right to equality before the law but also deny the procedural rights of individuals  guaranteed by the Constitution. If the allegations are true, these corrupt judges or hoodlums in purple robes must be booted out from office and jailed if we want to live in a place where there is an equal opportunity for everyone to live a life with dignity. Corruption in the country Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA, Apr 15 (Mabuhay) – Senator Antonio Trillanes IV trained his guns on Wednesday at the daughter of Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay after the lawmaker challenged him to show proof that her family paid members of the Court of Appeals to stop the suspension of her brother as mayor of Makati City. “Alam nyo parang mga bata itong mga ito, puro na lang hamon. Inimbitahan mo sa Senado ayaw namang humarap,” (They are like children, who like to issue challenges. But call them to the Senate and they don’t appear) Trillanes told reporters. Instead of giving in to the challenge of Abigail, the senator said was looking into how she used her pork barrel funds or Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). “I will take on the challenge to investigate yung anomaly ng PDAF nya,” he said. “Na challenge ako. Ginanahan ako. Pina-research ko yung mga bulate sa Makati and in time ipe-present natin,” he said.
