Celebrities, well-off people next targets of PNP anti-drug drive

By Christopher Lloyd T. Caliwan Philippine National Police Chief Director-General Ronald dela Rosa answers questions during a press conference at Camp Crame, Wednesday. Three high-ranking PNP officials allegedly involved in illegal drugs tagged by President Duterte reported to Dela Rosa to clear their names. (MNS photo) MANILA  (PNA) – As part of its intensified anti-drug campaign, the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said it will look into affluent people and celebrities involved in illegal drugs. Southern Police District (SPD) Acting Director Sr. Supt. Tomas Apolinario said from the PNP’s anti-drug operations also aims to curb the prevalence of party drugs such as ‘ecstasy’. He recalled the five fatalities at the Closeup Forever Summer concert in Pasay City last May 21 who used methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and alcohol. MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, is a psychoactive drug used primarily as a recreational drug. Desired effects of MDMA include increased empathy, pleasure, and heightened sensations. With the incident, Apolinario said party and concert organizers are now coordinating with the police to ensure that their events will not be used as a venue for illegal drug trade as these are usually attended by wealthy youth and celebrities. Despite the deployment of civilian-clothed and uniformed policemen during concerts or parties, Apolinario admitted that is difficult to track down people who used drugs before going to an event. As a precautionary measure, Apolinario said that they will deploy drug-testing kits in the entrance of the event to test the suspicious actions of an individual. Meanwhile, Read More …

Duterte at 4 p.m. Monday. (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday said he saw no reason why the House of Representatives would not pass the proposed Freedom of Information (FOI) following President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to have it implemented in the executive branch. In the Senate, Pimentel was confident that a more refined measure would be approved by the Senate committee on public information. He noted that the FOI bill was the pet measure of Senator Grace Poe, who he said wanted to retain the chairmanship of the committee. It was Poe who initiated that passage of the bill at the Senate but the same measure failed to get the approval of the House during the 16th Congress. “Kami sa Senate, nandyan si Senadora Grace Poe. ‘Yan po ang kanyang pet bill. At pinag-usapan nga namin kahapon din yan na kaya nga gusto nyang maging chairman ng public info committee, ire-refine nya ‘yung kanyang bill and she wants to make sure na kung ano ‘yung porma ‘yung pagkapasa last Read More …

WIN’s Halad Concert to benefit 2017 Tacloban City Medical-Dental Mission

Waray Initiative Network (aka WIN) did not only live to its acronym in accomplishing two things in the course of its three-year existence as a nonprofit. The third musical extravaganza called Halad Offering at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater in Hollywood last July 23 was a literal winner on two fronts. First, it provided a venue for the organization to pursue its effort of continuously educating others on the beauty and depth of the Philippine heritage and culture and second, the event enabled volunteerism to show its finer moments with the members’ and benefactors contributing their musical and artistic skills for a worthwhile project that will touch and impact the lives of their fellowmen thousands of miles away. Poe to fast-track bill giving Duterte crisis powers to fix traffic

Senators’ photo gallery: Senate’s Public Relations and Information Bureau(PRIB) photographers display photographs of Senators at the Senate photo gallery in preparation for the opening of 17th Congress on Monday, July 25.(PNA photo by Avito C.Dalan) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday vowed to fast-track the passage of a measure that would grant President Rodrigo Duterte emergency powers to address the traffic problem in the country that she said has already “paralyzed our economy and our people.” Poe was elected Tuesday as chair of the Senate committee on public services. “A Senate bill for such emergency powers has been assigned to the public services committee that I will chair and the best course of action is to set it for public hearing as soon as possible so we can engage the Department of Transportation and all other stakeholders and experts to determine its necessity and if so the best terms under which such powers will have to be carried out to achieve its purpose,” Poe said in a statement. The senator was reacting to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez’s bill or the “Traffic Crisis Act,” which seeks to grant emergency powers to Duterte for two years to do away with the mandatory bidding on procurement of transportation equipment and take over errant transport franchises to solve the traffic mess on roads and airports in Metro Manila and Cebu. The bill also proposes the creation of a “superbody” that would address the road and air traffic congestion in Metro Manila and Read More …

Scientist-developed compound brings hope of new epilepsy treatment

Researchers based in the USA have developed a compound that may prevent the development of epilepsy. After being tested on mice, the compound could soon be brought to human trials. The protective effect of this new compound was observed up to 100 days post-treatment.© diego_cervo/Istock.com Scientists from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center have developed a compound that blocks the hyper-excitability of neurons in epileptic mice. Until now, epilepsy drugs have targeted symptoms such as seizures, without halting the deterioration of dendritic spines, structures that allow brain cells to communicate. “In epilepsy, these structures are damaged and rewire incorrectly, creating brain circuits that are hyper-connected and prone to seizures, an important example of pathological plasticity,” the researchers explain. The protective effect of this new compound — which can notably prevent seizures — was observed up to 100 days post-treatment. This suggests that the development of epilepsy may have been halted. The compound was tested on mice and could soon be trialed on human patients. Epilepsy is a neurological condition which sees the normal pattern of brain activity become disturbed. It has a range of symptoms, including seizures, which can prevent sufferers from living normal lives. It can also cause strange sensations and behavior, such as olfactory or auditory hallucinations, loss of consciousness, muscle spasms, staring spells and more. The findings were published in the journal Nature. The study is available here: http://www.nature.com/articles/srep30298   if/hc/cb – Relaxnews
