BMW unveils the X5M and X6M ahead of LA

The new BMW X6M and X5M: Both cars are capable of hitting 280 km/h. ©BMW Group (Relaxnews) – Not one, but two supercar-baiting BMW SUVs are heading to this year’s LA Auto Show in November. Both the X5M and X6M are powered by the same glorious twin-turbo 4-liter V8 that currently works miracles in the company’s M5 executive sports sedan and M6 coupe and the result is, if anything, even more impressive considering the extra size, weight and girth the engine is attempting to propel. Whether you go for the X5M with its full-sized boot and sufficient headroom for four or the sloping coupe-styled X6M you’ll get a car theoretically capable of not getting stuck in the mud and being able to cope with inclement weather but that can also go from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds and onto a top speed of 280km/h if you ask BMW very nicely to remove the engine’s restrictor. For those that are too shy to ask about the restrictor or who are frankly scared of traveling at nearly 300km/h in something that weighs 2275kg (2265kg for the X6M), then the cars are limited to a slightly more sedate 250km/h but will still offer the same levels of power and acceleration – 564bhp and 553lb ft of torque to all four wheels. As a result the new cars are not only faster and lighter than the cars they’re replacing, they also give everything from the latest Porsche Cayenne Turbo S to the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Read More …

Carmina, Richard had falling out over Rustom

Carmina Villaroel (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — “They made a choice to let me go.” These were Carmina Villaroel’s words in recalling her bitter departure from the ABS-CBN sitcom “Palibhasa Lalake,” following a disagreement with her fellow cast members, including Richard Gomez, over her relationship with then-boyfriend Rustom Padilla. Villaroel said her relationship became the subject of jokes on set, which eventually led to a conflict between her and her co-stars. “That time, medyo serious na ‘yung tampuhan… Actually, kung ako lang talaga ang masusunod, tampo but mapapatawad ko. But since may ibang tao nang involved, I had to choose between them and [my boyfriend],” she said. Villaroel was an original cast member of “Palibhasa Lalake,” which started in 1987. She left the show in 1993, five years before the sitcom concluded its decade-long run. “They also made a choice to let me go, because lumaki na, eh,” Villaroel said. “Hindi na siya ‘yung parang internal problem. Lumaki na siya, eh. National news na, eh!” In the scene explaining the departure of her character, Cathy, Villaroel turned emotional as Gomez’s lines reflected the situation behind the cameras — that of a “younger sister” not heeding the advice of her brother. “It’s just so sad na I had to leave, and obviously I chose the other one kaysa doon sa show,” Villaroel said, referring to her relationship with Padilla. “Iyak ako nang iyak, hindi ako makapag-move on. Na-hurt ako bilang pamilya.” Villaroel and Padilla got married in 1994, but separated in Read More …

President Benigno S. Aquino III tours and inspects the Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines Canlubang Plant Expansion during the inauguration ceremony at the Silangan Industrial Estate in Canlubang, Calamba City, Laguna on Monday (November 03). With the president are Coca-Cola FEMSA Chief Executive Officer John Santa Maria, Chief Operating Officer Juan Ramon Felix, Manufacturing Director Guillermo Jose Amador, Canlubang Plant Manager Jorge Martinez, and Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Running for president may be the farthest thing in his mind right now, but Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello may think about this seriously following President Benigno Aquino III’s dare that he run for the highest office in the land if he knows how to run the country. Bello said that while he thinks there are people better than he is who are qualified to run for president, he is also not the kind of person who walks away from a challenge or dare, “especially from someone I respect.” “If what he’s (Aquino) saying is he’ll support me, then I’ll have to think about it seriously because I can’t let him down, can I?” he said. Aquino on Monday challenged Bello, whom he described as having “too many complaints,” to run for president if he thinks his views on the country’s affairs are correct. “Ang dami niya talagang reklamo. Siguro ang mungkahi ko na lang sa kanya, kung palagay niya ‘yung pananaw lang niya ang tama, sa 2016, may eleksyon ng presidente. Baka gusto niyang lumaban doon,” the President Read More …

Multiple issues: Love, life, death, freedom and genetics featured in ‘Blood Ransom’

The movie “Blood Ransom” featured love in three juxtaposed ways: romantic love, filial love and brotherly love. It’s a story borne out of filial love for the life of the unborn child with a rare blood condition called Rhesus factor, where the “unborn child if conceived, could actually poison the mother’s blood or vice versa;”  brotherly love between two brothers who always looked out for each other and romantic love that transcends beyond one’s existence. Anne Curtis The cinematographic features in the film reminded me of our college analytical classes in comparative literature under Professor Dadufalza who stressed to us that to achieve form in a certain genre, it has to have substance. Thus, the lighting angles used by both Director Francis Dela Torre and Jasmin Kuhn, Cinematographer delved into the “film noir” style where images were shot on “low key lighting producing unbalanced composition.” Darion Basco’s portrayal as Daniel, the detective who loved his brother with visual flashback images of their childhood,  continuously set up the mood for the story  And certainly, producer Albert Chang’s extensive background in music composition defined his outstanding selection in including the apropos background music of “Night”  a Chopin Ballad No.1 G minor, Op. 23. Though with minimal lines given to Anne Curtis who portrayed “Crystal”,” she became the central figure fighting for her “freedom” from Roman, her “master,”  played by Caleb Hunt. The aesthetically-done love scenes of Crystal and Jeremiah, played by European-born Alexander Dreymon defined romantic love without boundaries, defying Bill (played wonderfully by RIchard Harris’ son, Jamie Harries) who was the evil henchman of Roman. To all of you who Read More …

Aquino: Ona’s fate hangs in the balance

Health workers practice wearing protective suits and equipment during the ‘One Nation, One Direction for EBOLA Prevention’ training at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) hospital in Muntinlupa City on Tuesday, October 28. A first batch of personnel from government hospitals from all over the country is undergoing specialized training on Ebola measures from six international experts. DOH spokesman Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy said the procedures in the training modules will cover, among others, the patient’s entry into triage, confinement, and in case of ‘non-event,’ how their case may be used in ruling future cases. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III admitted on Monday that the fate of Health Secretary Enrique Ona depends on his answers to questions on the government’s health programs. Asked if Ona still has his trust and confidence, Aquino said: “[The answer] will come after the results of the answers to questions propounded to him.” Ona supposedly took a leave of absence due to his allergic reaction to hair dye. Aquino said he had questions on the immunization program of the Department of Health, which Ona needs to answer. “He asked for time to prepare his answers… He will not be able to prepare for those if he continues his day to day activities,” he added. Aquino did not explain further, but said he wants a balance between the preventive and curative aspects of medicine for public health. “I keep on emphasizing that people should not get sick in order to prevent Read More …

Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo arrives with husband, Jose Miguel, at the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court in Quezon City, Metro Manila, April 11, 2012. Arroyo entered a plead of not guilty to allegations of graft and corruption in the tainted telecommunications deal with China in 2007. REUTERS/Cheryl Ravelo (PHILIPPINES – Tags: POLITICS CRIME LAW) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Former President and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday asked the Sandiganbayan for a nine day temporary house arrest to attend the wake of her 13 month old grandson who died Sunday of a congenital heart disease. “Accused Arroyo respectfully prays that the Honorable Court immediately issue an order placing her under house arrest for nine days from November 3 to November 12 at her residence in La Vista [and to allow] her to attend daily the wake of her grandson at North Forbes [in Makati,]” Mrs. Arroyo’s motion read. In the same motion, Mrs. Arroyo asked that she be allowed to attend the burial of her grandson, the date and time of which has yet to be determined. In an emotional two page urgent ex parte motion for leave, Mrs. Arroyo asked the anti-graft court to allow her to visit the remains of Jorge Alonzo “Jugo” Arroyo Bernas, her grandson and the son of her only daughter, Luli Arroyo-Bernas.
