Sandiganbayan affirms suspension orders vs. Revilla, Cambe

Senator Bong Revilla, shown in photo on his way to be detained on plunder and graft charges, said his lawyer, Sal Panelo, only talked about the rats and roaches in his cell in jest. Revilla’s lawyer has said the senator’s family saw rats “as big as cats” inside the senator’s cell. (MNS photo) MANILA, Sept 25 (Mabuhay) – The Sandiganbayan First Division has upheld its decision to suspend Senator Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. and his former staff Richard Cambe for 90 days over the plunder and graft charges they are facing in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. In a 17-page resolution on Wednesday, the graft court junked the motion of reconsideration filed by Revilla’s camp, saying it found no basis to change its decision. In the same ruling, it also denied the senator’s prayer to suspend proceedings and upheld the existence of probable cause against him and Cambe. “In the present cases, the validity of the Informations against accused Revilla and Cambe has been established. (T)he Court, then and now, has pronounced that there is probable case to indict the accused-movants with plunder and violation of the anti-graft law,” the Sandiganbayan said. The anti-graft court ordered the suspension last August 4, as Revilla and Cambe face plunder and graft charges over the alleged pork barrel scam. Revilla, one of the three senators detained over the pork barrel scam, is accused of receiving P224.5 million in kickbacks from 2006 to 2010 from alleged mastermind, Janet Lim-Napoles. MANILA (AFP) – The Philippines’ biggest mall operator said Tuesday it had withdrawn from its shelves a T-shirt that made fun of rape, following social media outrage. A photo of the dark blue T-shirt with the slogan: “It’s not rape. It’s a snuggle with a struggle”, was posted by writer Karen Kunawicz on her Facebook page on Monday and quickly went viral. SM Supermalls said in a statement the message on the T-shirt was “unacceptable”, and that it only found out about it through social media. “We have immediately pulled out all the T-shirts of the consignor that distributes them,” it said in a statement. “Appropriate action will be taken to ensure this does not happen again. Thank you for informing us.” SM Supermalls, owned by the Philippines’ richest man Henry Sy, operates 46 malls locally and has expanded to China. Kunawicz’s Facebook photo of the T-shirt, which was displayed in the teen boys’ section, was shared almost 3,000 times and liked by close to 1,000 people by Tuesday afternoon. “I’m angry not just with SM but with the group of idiots that envisioned and actually produced this,” one Facebook user said in a comment to Kunawicz’s post. “A big company has an even bigger social responsibility to control what goes through their stores,” another person on Facebook said in a separate comment. Twitter user @Photoworldmanila said: “If you are a woman, you will be disgusted with #SM.” SM Supermalls said it was investigating how the shirt got into its Read More …

US urged to approve TPS for undocumented Filipinos

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III signs the Harvard University official guest book during public forum at Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday (MNS photo) NEW YORK – Saying there is still much to be done, Manila called on Washington to approve its request for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to allow undocumented Filipinos in the United States to help the Philippines rebuild much faster from the devastation wreaked by Typhoon Haiyan. In letters to Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. Del Rosario underscored the importance of the request, saying its approval would not only alleviate the plight of eligible Filipinos in the US but also greatly ease the strain placed in the country’s infrastructure and resources. “I take this opportunity to once again reiterate the Philippine Government’s request for the US Government’s immediate positive consideration of the request.” Secretary Del Rosario said. “Many of my countrymen in the US were affected by Typhoon Haiyan. This humanitarian assistance would provide temporary relief for them from the natural disaster,” he added. Secretary Del Rosario sent the letters, which were dated 22 September 2014, to Secretary Kerry and Secretary Johnson more than a month after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told leaders of the Filipino-American Community thatthe Philippine request to be placed under TPS is still under consideration. Manila formally filed for TPS designation in December, a few weeks after Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms in Read More …

Do lifestyle checks on all gov’t execs – House leader

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. delivers his speech at the opening of the Second Regular Session of the House of Representatives at the Batasang Pambansa Bldg. in Quezon City on Monday morning (July 28, 2014). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Any proposal to make lifestyle checks mandatory should cover all government officials, Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II said Tuesday. Asked if he would agree to lifestyle checks on members of the House of Representatives, Gonzales replied: “Why only congressmen, why not include mayor, governors, lahat-lahat na (everyone)?” Proposals for lifestyle checks have been aired anew following allegations that Vice President Jejomar Binay and his family benefited from the allegedly overpriced construction of the Makati City Hall Building 2 and, more recently, in the wake of plunder and graft charges filed against Philippine National Police Director General Alan Purisima. Malacañang and the Bureau of Internal Revenue are currently drafting rules for the conduct of mandatory lifestyle checks on members of the 148,000-strong PNP, which was recommended after confirmation that policemen were involved in a recent robbery and abduction that happened in broad daylight right on EDSA. However, in an earlier interview, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. opposed making lifestyle checks mandatory. “I have no objection to it, but it’s not something you can impose on everybody here,” he said. He said lifestyle checks might be necessary for officials facing allegations of corruption. “But if you’re somebody who doesn’t have any issue, I think it’s not really that needed,” he said. There is no Read More …

Stop blabbing and fight me, Pacquiao tells Mayweather

The amazing Kreskin predicts: It’s Mannyfist Destiny. Photo Credit: Chris Farina/Top Rank GENERAL SANTOS (AFP) – Philippine boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao threw down a fresh challenge to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Thursday, daring the American world champion to “fight me” instead of setting terms that could torpedo the dream bout. “He’s all talk. Until now he has not yet agreed to fight me. Instead of blabbing, he should face me atop the ring,” Pacquiao told AFP in an interview. Ring fans the world over have been baying for a mega-fight between two of the world’s greatest boxers of their generation, but previous talks have always broken down before a deal could be signed. Pacquiao, 35, has held world titles in eight separate weight divisions. He is training to defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight title against another undefeated American, Chris Algieri, in Macau in November. Mayweather, who scored a lopsided victory over Marcos Maidana in a rematch in Las Vegas on Saturday, pushing his record to 47-0, later denied he was trying to safeguard his unblemished record by avoiding Pacquiao. However, he said a Pacquiao bout would have to be on the American’s terms. Pacquiao retorted Thursday that great fighters did not duck facing the best and did not let any challenge pass by. “I’m tired of his alibis. If he really wants to fight me, he knows how to reach me. We can fight anytime, anywhere,” Pacquiao added. The Filipino, who has won 56, lost five and drawn two Read More …

BMW reveals the 2 Series Convertible

The BMW 2 Series Convertible: The leather is treated to absorb less heat from the sun’s rays. ©BMW (Relaxnews) – The latest addition to BMW’s soft-top line up offers more comfort and practicality than its predecessor without diluting performance. The 1-Series convertible was a huge hit with the company selling in excess of 130,000 examples. Its replacement, the 2 Series convertible, revealed on Wednesday ahead of its official launch at the Paris Motor Show, could prove to be even more popular. It’s bigger in pretty much every way than the car it replaces so that rear-seat passengers get an extra 43mm of leg room and the trunk now offers 353 liters of space when the roof’s up. When dropped and folded into the trunk, load space drops to 280 liters, but for a car that’s only 4432mm from nose to tail that’s not bad. To improve space inside without impacting on performance, BMW has opted for a lighter fabric rather than a heavy metal retractable roof. And rather than try to disguise the fact the car has a ‘soft’ top, BMW is accentuating it by offering owners a choice of fabric finishes to complement or contrast the exterior paint job. Although using a fabric soft top can mean that the cabin is noisier and colder when the roof’s up, because this one has four layers, BMW says that cabin noise in the rear has been cut by 7 decibels. Meanwhile, the system knows when the roof is down and can Read More …

Anne Curtis willing to play gay role

Anne Curtis (MNS photo) Anne Curtis believes being an actress requires openness to portraying offbeat roles so people shouldn’t be surprised if she plays a gay character one of these days. “Why not, ‘di ba?” she quips on the matter in an interview, laughing. Anne made clear though that, if ever, the script should be fresh. “I would be choosy sa script siguro, at kung anong klaseng istorya siya, pero as long as it’s a challenging role – if it adds to my versatility (as an actress) and it’s something that I’ve never ever done before – I’m game. Hindi naman siguro ako maiilang.” What if she’s paired with her boyfriend’s sister, Solenn Heussaff? “Oh, my God, para namang incest yun!” she exclaims, adding, “I don’t know, I’ve never thought about it pero, choosy ka pa ba?” If anything, Anne worries how local moviegoers would take to her portrayal. “Parang the audience isn’t ready for those kinds of films just yet. I know there will be a lot of people who have something to say about that,” she says. Ultimately, Anne shares that the most important for her is to be able to do what she loves most: act. (MNS)
