Palace apologizes for NLEX traffic nightmare

“We ask for forgiveness of the public,” President Benigno Aquino III said as acknowledged that traffic problems have an impact on the growth of the economy. Malacañang on Saturday apologized to motorists and commuters for the traffic nightmare at the North Luzon Expressway, but maintained there is a need to decongest the Port of Manila. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda also said Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson is now monitoring the traffic situation in the area. “Humihingi kami ng paumanhin sa malaking trapik na nangyari kahapon,” Lacierda said on government-run dzRB radio, adding Singson is monitoring the situation in the NLEX. As of noon Saturday, the traffic at NLEX had improved. The NLEX website also indicated traffic at all areas was light as of noon (www.tollways.net.ph). But Lacierda also said there is a need to decongest the Port of Manila. “We really need to decongest and move these to Subic,” he said. On Wednesday, Secretary to the Cabinet Jose Rene Almendras announced the last mile routes and an all-day access to truck lanes. This is a “special privilege” for truckers, importers and brokers who would pull out their cargo from Manila ports in the next two Sundays and Monday mornings. (MNS)

Cuisia, Jr. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Remittances from Filipinos in the United States and other parts of the world helped the Philippines regain its position as Southeast Asia’s best performing economy during the first semester of the year. “The Philippine economy grew by 6.4 percent during the second quarter of 2014 also because of the millions of dollars that our kababayans, especially those in the US, have been sending home,” Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. said after the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) announced the good news. “Our diaspora plays a very important role in the economic transformation now taking place in the Philippines,” Ambassador Cuisia said as he paid tribute to the 3.5 million members of the Filipino-American Community who consistently account for more than half of the total remittances the Philippines receive annually from abroad. Citing NEDA figures, Ambassador Cuisia said remittances by overseas-based Filipinos reached a new high for the year in June when inflows went up by 5.9 percent to $2.050 billion that month, raising the total for the first half by 5.8 percent to $11.422 billion. “Our economy is performing well as result of a stronger industry and services sector and robust remittances from overseas Filipinos,” Ambassador Cuisia said. “This should make the Philippines more competitive and more attractive Read More …

Palace defends Congressmen who voted to junk Aquino impeach raps

President Benigno S. Aquino III shares the stage with newly sworn in government officials for a photo souvenir after administering the oath in a ceremony at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Monday (September 01). Also in photo are Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II and Supreme Court Associate Justice Francis Jardeleza. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – As far as Malacañang is concerned, congressmen did what they were supposed to do when they junked the impeachment complaints filed against President Benigno Aquino III. “Ang pasya ng komite ng Kamara ay batay sa paninindigan ng higit na nakararami na walang sapat na batayan ang mga paratang laban sa Pangulo,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a text message. (The decision of the House committee on Justice is based on the stand of the majority that there is no sufficient basis for the accusations against the President.) Coloma added that the petitioners should not stray from the issue at hand by referring to a case still under the Supreme Court. He was reacting to Bagong Alyansang Makabayan’s (Bayan) statement that what happened was an injustice because “Aquino allies who benefited from DAP (Disbursement Acceleration Program) killed the impeachment to defend their pork barrel benefactor.” The justice committee on Tuesday found the three impeachment complaints, two of which tackled the DAP, insufficient in substance. In separate votes, 54 lawmakers dismissed each of the three complaints, and only four voted in favor of the raps. Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas, Read More …

Levito Baligod , the former lawyer of pork scam whistle-blower Benhur Luy, believes his former client has the more credible list of lawmakers implicated in the pork barrel scam of Janet Lim Napoles. He said he made separate lists based on the information, which was then verified by the pork scam whistle-blowers. MANILA (Mabuhay) – Benhur Luy, principal whistleblower in the alleged multi-billion peso pork barrel fund scam, and standing as witness in the bail hearings of Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr’s plunder case, has sought the Sandiganbayan’s assistance to block the defense team’s access to his controversial hard drive, which according to him contains documents pertaining lawmakers’ transactions with bogus NGOs. Sam Milby (MNS photo) Sam Milby clarified his earlier statement that his former girlfriend, Anne Curtis, “will always remain in [his] heart.” This comes after Curtis, his co-star in the comedy film “The Gifted,” was asked if she believes that Milby has already moved on from their past relationship. Milby explained that the reason why he said that is because of the things that they have shared in the past. “I will. I will always love her because we shared something, yung pinagdaanan namin, yung pinagsamahan namin, we shared something. Para sa akin, kapag in love, parang umaasa pa. Ako, I know na happy siya. I’m truly happy for the both of them,” he said, referring to Curtis’ four-year relationship with restaurateur Erwan Heussaff. When asked if he’s already over Curtis, Milby said: “If I were still hoping, I’d still feel kind of… basta I’m happy for them.” Anne Curtis and Sam Milby (MNS Photo) Curtis and Milby became a couple during the first quarter of 2007, but the actress broke up with him later that year to establish her “personal relationship with God.” In 2008, the two admitted that they were exclusively dating again. The two have remained friends since then, with Milby even saying that Curtis is his “deepest love.” Aside from their upcoming movie “The Gifted”, Milby and Curtis also reunited on screen when they both starred in the recently concluded fantasy series “Dyesebel.” (MNS)

House ways and means body raises tax exemption ceiling for bonuses to P70,000

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), in partnership with SM Malls conduct nationwide jobs fair in celebration of Labor Day (May 1). Over 310,000 jobs are offered to qualified applicants. Photo shows applicants line up at Mall Event Center of SM Manila. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The ways and means committee of the House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the bill increasing the tax exemption ceiling for workers’ bonuses to P70,000. The tax exemption would cover the 13th month pay, Christmas bonus, and other bonuses received by employees yearly. The current ceiling for the tax exemption of P30,000 was set by law in 1994. Marikina Representative Romero Federico Quimbo, chairman of the committee, said a report would be immediately drafted so that the measure could be reported and tackled in plenary, noting that the bill was among the priorities in the House. “We adjusted the tax exemption to P70,000.  We just want to preserve what the workers are enjoying before, because P30,000 is in actuality only P14,000 today,” he said in an interview. Based on the computation of the committee, the increase in tax exemption would result in lost revenues of around P1.5 billion a year. But Quimbo said that the government would be able to recoup these losses through taxes on purchased goods and direct taxes on deposits. “Every peso that is lost from the national treasury through the additional exemption means increased purchasing power of the workers, which improves the economy.  There’s really more upside to Read More …

House panel junks three impeachment raps vs. Aquino

President Benigno S. Aquino III administers the oath of office to newly appointed government officials in a ceremony held at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Monday (September 01). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The House justice committee on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to junk the three impeachment complaints against President Benigno Aquino III, declaring them to “insufficient in substance.” Voting 54-4 in all three impeachment complaints, the panel moved to dismiss the impeachment raps against Aquino. Two of the three complaints filed against the President alleged that Aquino committed a culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in connection with his implementation of the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). The Supreme Court has declared the DAP partially unconstitutional. The third complaint also alleged culpable violation of the Constitution with regard to the Aquino administration’s signing of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the US. The EDCA is now the subject of a suit before the Supreme Court. Tension marred the House justice committee’s deliberations on the sufficiency of substance of the three impeachment complaints against Aquino III after a heated exchange between an administration ally and a militant lawmaker. The argument started after Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone accused Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Colmenares, one of the endorsers of the impeachment complaint, of having received funds from the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), which has been declared partially unconstitutional by the Supreme Court and is the basis of two of the three complaints. In response, Read More …
