Majority of Pinoys think Senate ‘pork’ probe unfair — Pulse Asia

Senate Minority Floor Leader Juan Ponce Enrile (center) arrives at the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City on Friday, July 11, to attend his arraignment on graft and plunder charges in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. He faces one count of plunder and 15 counts of graft. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Majority of Filipinos think the Senate’s investigation on the alleged pork barrel scam was unfair and spared administration allies, a Pulse Asia survey showed. The survey – conducted from June 24 to July 2, 2014 and whose results were released Thursday – showed that a little over half (53 percent) of the 1,200 respondents said the Senate only investigated and charged opposition members in connection with alleged anomaly. Senators Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., Jinggoy Estrada and Juan Ponce Enrile are currently detained while facing plunder and graft cases in connection with the alleged P10-billion anomaly said to be orchestrated by trader Janet Lim-Napoles. Meanwhile, a big majority of the respondents are convinced that the people being linked to the supposed scam are involved, although respondents were split on how many of them were indeed guilty. Thirty-four percent of the survey respondents said some of the names being linked to the anomaly were “believably involved” in the scam, and that 30 percent said most of those accused participated in government fund misuse. Nineteen percent, meanwhile, said all of the names were involved in the alleged scam, while only four percent believed they were innocent. (MNS)

Aquino at the Glorietta Activity Center in Palm Drive, Makati City on Monday (August 04, 2014). It also revisits Mrs. Aquino’s years as the first female President of the Philippines from 1987 to 1992. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III’s hint that he may be open to seeking a second term has stirred a hornet’s nest in the House of Representatives, with allies backing the notion and critics saying he had “unmasked” his true intentions. The suggestions for Aquino to seek a second term come as the House is about to start plenary debates on a resolution authored by Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. to amend the economic provisions of the Constitution. Several bills are also pending at the House committee on constitutional amendments seeking the creation of a constitutional convention to introduce amendments to the Constitution. “As I said before, the President cannot just let the process of transformation and progress be wasted as the remnants of the traditional, corrupt leaders are salivating on the prospect of returning to their old ways,” Caloocan Read More …

Photo: Benny Uy MANILA (Mabuhay) — Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay said Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and a Senator Aquilino Pimentel III-led committee should apologize if allegations about an overpriced office and parking building in the city are not true. In a statement, Binay said: “When the facts all come out and when the allegations are proven false, we ask nothing in return but a public apology from the senator who authored the probe and from the committee for allowing itself to be used as a venue for character assassination and political demolition.” He said he and his father, Vice President Jejomar Binay, “totally welcome” the investigation initiated by Trillanes. Nonetheless, he asked Trillanes to treat decently the probe. “Based on his statements, he has made up his mind and he intends to use the Senate hearing as a platform to malign the name of the Vice President,” he said. He noted Trillanes even promised to present witnesses against his father. “May we remind the senator that this is not a trial. It is supposed to be a hearing in aid of legislation,” he said. Binay added the hearings are already unnecessary since there is already an official audit report. “The allegations have already been discredited as baseless by an intensive review made by Commission on Read More …

Prosecutors oppose subpoenas on whistleblowers’ wealth records

Senator Jinggoy Estrada arrives at the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City on Monday, June 30, for his arraignment over the plunder charges filed against him and businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles in connection with the alleged P10-B pork barrel scam. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — State prosecutors in the plunder and graft cases of Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Wednesday opposed the request of businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles to subpoena bank, travel and real estate documents of whistleblowers in the multibillion-peso pork barrel scam case. In a seven page opposition penned by Deputy Special Prosecutor John Turalba, the prosecutors said the Request for the Issuance of Subpoena the alleged pork barrel scam mastermind filed wasn’t justified. “A reading of the requests for subpoena for the [Bureau of Immigration], the [Land Registration Authority], and the [Land Transportation Office] readily shows that no reason or justification therefor was advanced,” the prosecution panel said. “Truth be told, the request is unnecessary and the subject matter therefor irrelevant, considering that Benhur Luy, Arthur Luy, Abegail Umali, Gertrudes Luy, Marina Sula and Merlina Suñas are not the accused in the case,” it added. Napoles, who is accused of masterminding the scam that saw billions of pesos in public funds diverted to bogus foundations she controlled, is also charged with serious illegal detention by whistleblower and her former trusted aide Benhur Luy. Napoles is facing three counts of plunder and multiple counts of graft for allegedly masterminding the massive fraud. In their August 11 request for Subpoena, Napoles’ lawyers asked Read More …

Aquino III congratulates Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang, Jr. after administering the oath in a ceremony at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Monday (August 11). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured on Thursday that it would remain “apolitical and nonpartisan” despite calls for President Benigno Aquino III’s term extension. “That’s something very political. We remain apolitical and nonpartisan,” said AFP Chief of Staff General Gregorio Catapang Jr. when asked by reporters during the turn-over ceremony of military riffles at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City on the openness of Aquino to a second term. Catapang said the calls for Aquino to make another run for the presidency are a product of a “vibrant democracy.” “It’s just an opinion, a talk of the town,” he said. “These things are things that are products of a vibrant democracy and the political dynamics that is now happening in our country,” he added. The military chief said it would not interfere in the political landscape of the country. Earlier this month, a social media campaign called “One More Term: Re-Elect P-Noy for 2016” recently flooded pages on Facebook and Twitter, supposedly emanating from Aquino’s official Facebook account, which has more than 4 million followers. Also, some members of the Senate and House of Representatives supported the idea of Aquino’s term extension. However, for Aquino to make another run for the presidency after his term in Read More …

Palparan: No military involvement in case of missing UP students

Retired Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan is presented to the media after he was arrested by National Bureau of Investigation agents at a house in Sta. Mesa, Manila before dawn Tuesday, August 12. A Bulacan court issued in 2011 an arrest warrant against Palparan, who is charged with two counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention of University of the Philippines students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Retired general and kidnapping suspect Jovito Palparan on Tuesday denied any involvement in the abduction of University of the Philippines students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño in June 2006. “Never akong nagkaroon ng feeling ng guilt. Gusto kong harapin ang kaso, at kung patas lang ang judge, I will win that case,” Palparan said. Palparan stressed that he did not go into hiding due to guilt, but rather because he feared for his safety once arrested. “Hindi ako nagtatago dahil sa guilt, pero dahil sa security,” he added. “Alam niyo naman sa kulungan, maraming insidente, not that I’m doubting the agencies.” He added that the military has no involvement in the alleged abduction. “Wala namang na-involve o nag-move na military at that time,” he said. “Marami rin silang kalaban, nakasagasaan… Basta, I’m sure walang na-involve na mga tao ko dun.” Palparan also claimed that the two victims who went missing were not really students, but rather members of the communist New People’s Army. “Ang sinasabing mga estudyante, two to three years na silang wala sa UP… Sa verification ko, Read More …

US coach freezes out rebel Azkal players

Azkals midfielder Stephan Schrock and fellow mainstay Dennis Cagara declared on Twitter and Facebook that they had played their last match under American coach Thomas Dooley, amid speculation they were unhappy over a policy perceived to favour younger players. (Photo from Azkals Facebook page) MANILA (AFP) – American coach Thomas Dooley on Thursday kicked out a European-based mainstay of the Philippines’ national football team and left the future of two other players in doubt following a highly public social media spat. Midfielder Stephan Schrock and fellow mainstay Dennis Cagara declared on Twitter and Facebook this week they had played their last match under Dooley, amid speculation they were unhappy over a policy perceived to favour younger players. Schrock got the boot, while the international careers of goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and left-back Cagara are in limbo after Dooley revealed neither was invited to the Azkals’ training camp for an invitational Peace Cup tournament in Manila next month. Dooley accused them of being “selfish and putting themselves in front of everything”. “If somebody does this it’s the worst thing that could happen to a team…. Even if the best player does something like this it kind of poisons the team, so we have to go against that,” Dooley told a news conference. But the German-born coach reserved most of his venom for Schrock. “You cannot have a player like this in the team. It makes a mess everywhere to me. So it’s clear to me: He’s not playing for me anymore.” The Read More …
