Palace: Pork raps strong despite botched bid to amend information

Senator Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. undergoes booking procedures in Camp Crame on Friday, June 20, after he surrendered to the Sandiganbayan. The anti-graft court manifested that it has taken Revilla into custody because he surrendered, and that there is no need to serve an arrest warrant issued against him. The booking process included a medical examination, and taking his fingerprints and mugshot. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Thursday said the failed attempt by prosecutors from the Office of the Ombudsman to amend the information filed against Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. was not an indication the plunder and graft cases filed over the pork barrel scam are weak. “The Department of Justice has done its part from the time they submitted their findings. The DOJ conducted a thorough investigation. They submitted the product of their case buildup to the Office of the Ombudsman and the Office of the Ombudsman conducted its own process,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a briefing aired over state-run Radyo ng Bayan. “We believe the concerned agency of the government has already done what it should do. The DOJ has done its homework. They have spent enough time to examine the merit of the case that they have filed,” he added. Despite the junking of the petition, Coloma said: “It is our view that in filing an amended information with the Sandiganbayan, the Office of the Special Prosecutor acted well within the rules of court that allow the prosecution to present its Read More …

Palace: Aquino not trying to sway court on Enrile treatment

Senator Juan Ponce Enrile gestures during the budget committee hearing of Bureau of Customs (BoC) and the Department of Finance (DOF) at the senate yesterday afternoon. Also in photo was Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri. (edwin muli) MANILA (Mabuhay) — A Malacañang spokesperson on Thursday maintained that President Benigno Aquino III is not trying to influence the Sandiganbayan on how to treat embattled Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, who is facing plunder and graft charges in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. “Malinaw sa pahayag ng Pangulo na ipinapaubaya sa hukuman ang pasya kung saan maaring i-detine si Sen. Enrile,” Presidential Communications Operations Office head Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement. Coloma was responding to Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption founding chair Dante Jimenez, who claimed the President could be held liable for “influence-peddling” since the Sandiganbayan is still in the process of determining probable cause in Enrile’s case. Jimenez was referring to Aquino’s earlier statement that the court should consider the age and frail health of Enrile in determining where he will be detained once a warrant of arrest is issued against him. Coloma, however, said the President was just asking the court to take into consideration the senator’s physical condition. “Hindi ito maaring maituturing na ini-impluwensya ng Pangulo ang sinuman,” he said. Enrile is facing one count of plunder and 15 counts of graft. He and his co-accused are alleged to have amassed P172.8 million in kickbacks from 2004 to 2010 through the pork barrel scam. U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Paul Kelly SUBIC BAY (AFP) – The United States and the Philippines kicked off joint naval exercises Thursday in the South China Sea near waters claimed by Beijing, amid tense territorial rows between China and its neighbors. Filipino military officials said the week-long maneuvers, involving three US warships and more than a thousand servicemen, would address Manila’s “capability gaps” as well as testing its newest military vessels. The Philippines is engaged in a bitter territorial dispute with China over parts of the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety. China has increasingly asserted its claims to the sea, which are believed to harbor vast oil and gas deposits, and parts of which are also claimed by Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. Beijing placed an oil rig in disputed waters last month, sparking deadly anti-China riots in Vietnam. Philippine officers said the annual war games, involving more than a thousand US personnel and about 400 Filipino counterparts, would test the Philippines’ two Read More …

Why BIR requires customs brokers to get clearance

Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henarez advises the camp of boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao to talk with the BIR to know all the problems on the garnishment order against his bank accounts during a press conference at the Department of Justice on Thursday (Nov. 28, 2013). Flanking her are BIR Deputy Commissioner Estela V. Sales (left) and Atty. Albert Opon. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares said customs brokers and importers are required to get clearance from the BIR before they can transact with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to help boost government’s drive against smuggling. Henares said the new requirements will ensure that customs brokers and importers are involved in legitimate businesses. “Kung talagang nagnenegosyo kayo, every month nagfa-file kayo ng tax returns, at every quarter nagfa-file kayo ng income tax returns. Ginagamit ‘yung records ng BIR para masigurado na talagang kayo ay lehitimong importer o kaya lehitimong customs broker,” she said. Henares also clarified that the BIR will only give clearances to importers and brokers through the Importer Clearance Certificate or the Broker Clearance Certificate, and it is the BOC that will give the accreditation. “Hindi kami nag a-accredit. Ang requirement ng Bureau of Customs bago sila ma-accredit ng Customs ay kailangang pumunta sila ng Bureau of Internal Revenue at kumuha sila ng clearance na talagang nagbabayad sila ng buwis,” she said. Angel on Luis: ‘Napakaswerte ko’

Angel Locsin and Luis Manzano (MNS Photo) On top of the massive success of her just-concluded series “The Legal Wife,” Angel Locsin is feeling lucky these days when it comes to her relationship with Luis Manzano. Despite having little time to spend with Manzano due to their respective work schedules, Locsin is thankful that the TV host understands the demands of being an actress, with some taping days ending early in the morning. Throughout the four-month run of “The Legal Wife,” Manzano has also been vocal of his support of the series, which aired its final episode last June 13. “Napaka-supportive niya at proud na proud siya lalo na pag meron akong magagandang eksena na napakita, kaya napakaswerte ko talaga,” Locsin said. Fresh from the success of “The Legal Wife,” Locsin is taking up another TV project, this time as an acting coach on “Promil Pre-School i-Shine Talent Camp 3,” which will premiere on June 28. Contrasting honors heaped on Anaheim

First, the good news: The City of Anaheim, place of choice of more than 346, 000 residents, one of the most populous cities in California and home to the world famous Disneyland Resort, has been named  as “2014 Playful City in the U.S.A because of its commitment to providing places and opportunities for children’s year-round balance and active play”. The sad news, and a real dampener which many find Anaheimers hard to believe, is that their beloved city has been ranked 9th in the list  “Unfriendliest Cities in the U.S.” according to a survey of Conde Naste Traveler Reader notwithstanding its 20 million tourists who visit the world class offerings and the reported record-breaking high hotel occupancies. Asian Achiever: Orange County’s Asian-Pacific Islanders achievers in various fields were recognized for their contributions to the community at the awards ceremonies highlighting the celebration of the Asian Pacific Islanders Heritage Month at the South Coast Plaza Shopping Mall recently. The event was organized by Pacific Trade and Culture Alliance in cooperation with their business and professional organizations in the county and had become a showcase for the colorful and artistic heritage of Asian culture. The city elders, led by Mayor Tom Tait, brushed off the label with the honor heaped on the City as a “Playful City” which recognized its effort to“strive to continue to create and maintain a vibrant park system consisting of well-maintained parks which provide safe, challenging recreational opportunities that feature playgrounds with exciting play opportunities”. AFP says 2-mile run for soldiers ‘life-threatening’

Soldiers march during an Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) change of command ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo military headquarters in Quezon city, Metro Manila back in January 2013. Senior officers said a two-mile run could be “life-threatening” to troops, and have shortened a fitness test to compensate after three officers have collapsed and died doing the fitness tests since 2010. (MNS photo) MANILA (AFP) – Most armies pride themselves on pushing soldiers to their physical limits in preparation for combat. But in the Philippines, senior officers have decided a two-mile run could be “life-threatening” to troops, and have shortened a fitness test to compensate. The timed run forms a key part of the twice-yearly fitness examination for all soldiers, but from next month the apparently deadly distance will be reduced to a safer two kilometers, military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Ramon Zagala said. The change was instituted as three officers have collapsed and died doing the fitness tests since 2010, according to a military commissioned health study that recommended the shorter runs, according to Zagala. “The technical working group found out that after two kilometers they (soldiers) can fall victim to heart attack or stroke,” he said. One of those who died was a marine officer who ran the old distance in 16 minutes, Zagala said. All the time limits are determined by the troops’ ages, with the youngest soldiers required to run the two kilometers within 12 minutes, according to Zagala. Officers who fail the test will not be given command Read More …

The hearing, entitled “Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund: Examining the Department of Defense and Interagency Process for Verifying Eligibility,” provided Rep. In his opening remarks, Rep. Heck talked about the heroic service of Filipino soldiers in World War II and described the plight of The Mighty Five, a group of Filipino-American World War II veterans who reside in Las Vegas and have been denied full recognition of their service. Drilon backs DOJ for administration of witness protection program

CELEBRATING THE SENATE’S 97th ANNIVERSARY. Senate President Franklin M. Drilon addresses Senate officials and employees during the Senate’s flag raising ceremony Monday, October 21. Drilon took the opportunity to thank everyone for what he calls a “selfless act” in deciding to forego plans to celebrate the annual Christmas Party in favor of donating the funds to the victims of recent calamities that struck Visayas and Mindanao. The Senate, which is also celebrating its 97th Anniversary, has also decided to allocate the budget for the anniversary to the victims of the recent 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Bohol and Cebu. (MNS photo) MANILA, June 25 (Mabuhay) – Senate President Franklin M. Drilon said he is opposed to a proposed legislation which seeks to remove the Witness Protection Program (WPP) from the Department of Justice, saying that it is part of the agency’s mandate as the government’s primary prosecution arm to search out for witnesses and ensure their safety to aid in effective disposition of justice. The Senate leader threw his support behind Secretary Leila de Lima who sought to retain jurisdiction on the WPP under the DOJ which is the subject of House Bill No. 4583 seeking to transfer administration of WPP to lower courts. As former justice secretary, Drilon said he fully understands the need for the DOJ to retain control of the WPP. “It is the duty of the DOJ being the lead prosecutor to gather credible witnesses who have knowledge about the crimes committed. Sarah plays down ‘Maybe This Time’ success

Sarah Geronimo and Coco Martin (MNS Photo) Sarah Geronimo does not agree with Coco Martin’s statement that she is the reason why their first big screen team-up became a blockbuster hit. Martin previously said that he is truly grateful for the singer-actress for making “Maybe This Time” his first blockbuster hit movie. A humbled Geronimo said the success of their film shouldn’t be credited to her alone. “Hindi naman ako ‘yun. Kaming dalawa ‘yun and ‘yung buong production team, ‘yung mga writers namin. Unang una sa lahat, simple lang ‘yung storya namin pero talagang galing sa puso. Kinopya sa buhay ng mga tao. Nilagay lang namin sa pelikulang ito kaya marami lang sigurong natuwa at naka-relate. Hindi ako ‘yun. Kaming buong team ‘yun,” she said. According to Star Cinema, “Maybe This Time” breached the P100-million mark at the box office after only eight days in theaters. It is still being shown in some theaters. Meanwhile, Geronimo thanked God for all her success. “In everything that we do, we acknowledge God, ‘yung grace ni Lord and siyempre ‘yung family natin and the people who give us inspiration. Of course, ‘yung Viva kasi hindi naman mangyayari lahat ng ito kung hindi tayo pinagkakatiwalaan ng management ng Viva and, of course, Star Cinema,” she said. Asked if she also feels tired considering her consecutive projects, the singer-actress said, “Siyempre may mga panahon na napapagod ka rin dahil lahat naman tayo may pagod din naman. Pero ang importante diyan, we enjoy what we do, Read More …
