UN peacekeepers to guard Pope Francis’ PH visit

Agence France-Presse 3:38 pm | Sunday, September 28th, 2014 Philippine U.N. Peacekeepers. AP file photo MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has assigned a thousand-strong force of its United Nations peacekeepers to help guard Pope Francis when he visits Asia’s main Catholic outpost next January, the military said Sunday. The papal security force will include more than 300 soldiers who were withdrawn from the UN-administered Golan Heights buffer zone after the unit fought off an attack by Syrian rebels last month. “We believe that their exposure and experience in peacekeeping operations in Syria will be beneficial towards the successful security of Pope Francis’s papal visit to the Philippines,” said a statement quoting military chief General Gregorio Catapang. Two battalions of Filipino UN peacekeepers, including those withdrawn from the Golan Heights as well as those who had been training to replace them, will join a police-led security detail for the pope, he added. A Filipino battalion comprises about 500 soldiers. The Philippines earlier announced it would not replace its Golan Heights troops due to the worsening security there. The local Catholic church leadership said Pope Francis will be in the Philippines from January 15-19 and will visit the survivors of Super Typhoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan), which left about 7,300 people dead across the central Philippines in November last year. Philippine politicians have said Filipino Islamic militants, some of who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State jihadists fighting in Iraq and Syria, could pose a threat during the papal visit. Miaa to proceed with integrating Naia terminal fee in air fare on Oct. 1

By Niña P. Calleja |Philippine Daily Inquirer 11:29 pm | Wednesday, September 24th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines—Despite the opposition from overseas Filipino workers’ groups and recruiting agencies, the Manila International Airport Authority is going ahead with its plan to integrate the terminal fee into the cost of airline tickets beginning Oct. 1. But Jose Angel Honrado, the Miaa general manager, said the agency has always been open to suggestions for improving its systems and would continue to be so. “No system is perfect. This is why we are not closing the door to possible improvements. For now, we are determined to proceed, observe and see later on how else we can enhance it to settle all stakeholders’ concerns,” Honrado said in a statement. The main argument for integrating the terminal fee into the airline ticket is to ease the check-in process. The Miaa has noted that some 7 million passengers have to queue to pay for the terminal fee at the Naia. From Oct. 1, all international airline tickets will include the cost of the P550 international passenger service charge (IPSC), better known as the terminal fee. “We are happy that finally, we are raising Naia’s level of service to be at par with its counterparts abroad,” Honrado said. He said the integration would be implemented simultaneously by all airlines worldwide and would cover passengers transiting Manila to any destination point. The process will go through a transition period and is expected to be fully implemented by October 2015, when all Read More …

Aquino downplays ISIS threat in PH

By Christian V. Esguerra |Philippine Daily Inquirer 6:30 pm | Sunday, September 21st, 2014 President Benigno S. Aquino III AP BERLIN—President Benigno Aquino III has downplayed the threat posed by the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the Philippines, saying the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has been helping prevent Filipino Muslims from getting drawn to the terrorist group. The President expressed doubts over claims that some of them have become affiliated with ISIS, which has been on a rampage in Iraq. “With regard to claims of being part of ISIS, we think these are more [of] claims, and our intelligence reports tell us that they are not based on actual contact or coordination with the same,” he said in a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “It is an attempt to enhance their own status, especially for those that are increasingly being marginalized.” In a separate forum, he indicated that these groups, which he did not identify, were just riding on the prominence of the ISIS threat. “The same groups that were claiming linkage to Al-Qaeda according to our intelligence reports are the same people who are claiming that they have pledged allegiance to the caliph of the ISIS,” he told his audience here. “And we presumed not to belittle them but if there is a new group that is ascendant, they will be probably the next franchisee in our country.” Aquino acknowledge that the MILF “probably had some links to Al Qaeda Read More …

Canadian Islamist preacher deported from PH

Agence France-Presse 5:03 pm | Sunday, September 14th, 2014 Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips AFP FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — A Canadian Islamic preacher detained for being a security threat in the Philippines was flown back to Canada after agreeing to be deported, the immigration bureau said Sunday. Jamaican-born Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips was returned to Canada late Saturday after being detained last weekend in the southern Philippines while on a lecture tour. This came after immigration commissioners approved his request for voluntary deportation, effectively cutting short the deportation proceedings, the bureau said in a statement. “He was charged for being an undesirable foreign national and for being inadmissible at the time of entry,” the bureau said, explaining Philips’ detention. The bureau earlier said he was blacklisted based on information that he might conduct activities that were a threat to national security. Police said Philips may have ties to extremist groups as they prevented him from holding a series of lectures in the south where the Philippine’s restive Muslim minority is based. In a post on his Facebook page dated September 14, Philips said: “Rejection can be utterly disappointing but we must never forget that every closed door is a redirection to what is better for us”. Philips also acknowledged that he was blacklisted in the United States, Britain, Australia and Kenya, but said this was based partly on statements that were taken out of context. He was the second Islamic convert preacher to be detained by the Philippines since July, Read More …

Aquino arrives in Madrid for official visit

By Christian V. Esguerra |Philippine Daily Inquirer 2:24 pm | Sunday, September 14th, 2014 President Benigno S. Aquino III. Malacañang Photo Bureau MADRID — President Benigno Aquino III arrived here at 7:22 a.m. (1:22 p.m. in Manila) for the opening leg of his five-nation trip to Europe and the United States, styling himself as a bearer of “good news” about the Philippines and promising a “long list” of benefits when he returns home nearly two weeks later. The President will have up to 86 engagements in Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and the US, including an audience with King Felipe VI of Spain at Palacio de la Zarzuela and a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday, Sept. 15. “Our trip will be long…but we’re certain that we will also bring home a long list of good news for our country, our ‘bosses,’ our beloved people,” said Aquino, who arrived on board Philippine Airlines Flight PR001 at the Torrejon Airbase. One such news he hopes to hear is Europe’s support for the Philippines in its territorial dispute with China over portions of the West Philippine Sea. The Philippines is trying to rally support behind its proposed “triple action plan,” which seeks to resolve disputes through international arbitration, a route rejected by Beijing. Under the plan, Manila wants claimant countries not to engage in activities that would raise tensions, and calls for a binding Code of Conduct in the disputed areas. Aquino will open his official visit here with a meeting Read More …

NBI, police hold 3 suspects who disposed body of Japanese, Filipina

By Tetch Torres-Tupas |INQUIRER.net 10:29 pm | Thursday, August 14th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines—The National Bureau of Investigation together with the Infanta Municipal Police in Quezon Province took into custody persons believed to have disposed of the body of a Japanese national and his girlfriend that have been missing for almost two months. Yun Okada, 54, and girlfriend Honeylyn Cirunay have been missing since last week of June. Taken into custody by the NBI are Eduardo Manayon, 57; Luisito Avellaneda, 41 and Vedasto Tena, 51. The three executed an affidavit on their participation in disposing the body of the victims. Manayon, in his affidavit, said they were asked by their so-called master to dispose of some trash. He said they have no idea that the “trash” were two dead people. Initially on June 30, they buried the body in a shallow grave, which was originally dug for treasure hunting. However, when they knew that the police were investigating the disappearance of two people, they got nervous and decided to exhume the cadavers and dump them at sea. Five cement sacks were filled up with sand and tied to the victims to make sure that the bodies will sink, Manayon said. The three will become the government’s witnesses. Suspects to the death of the two have been identified by the NBI’s Death Investigation Unit as Don Raleigh Reyes, 20 and Ashley, Okada’s adoptive daughter. Xyza Bacani’s HK journey passed through SF

Xyza Bacani CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Documentary photographer Rick Rocamora doesn’t not even know how to pronounce her name. In fact, he and Xyza Bacani have yet to meet face-to-face, even though they’ve become key players in an inspiring story about Filipino photography that’s been drawing attention worldwide. Like many things nowadays, it began on Facebook. Rocamora, who is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, was surfing the site when he found on a photography group’s page compelling pictures of street life in Hong Kong. He assumed at first that they had been taken by some rich Filipino kids based in Hong Kong. “Akala ko anak ng mayaman na nakatira sa Hong Kong na kuha lang ng kuha,” he told me. But when he reached Xyza via email, she initially gave vague answers on what she was doing in Hong Kong. She told him she was a “mentor.” Only later did she become comfortable enough to disclose that she was a domestic helper working for an affluent Chinese family. Rick understood her reluctance to be more open at first. “She didn’t know me.” Then there’s the stigma around being a domestic helper in a city like Hong Kong. But the fact that she was DH made her work even more impressive to Rick. She immediately reminded her of Vivian Maier, the celebrated American photographer who worked as a nanny in Chicago and whose photos of that city, Los Angeles and New York later won critical acclaim. It was Rocamora who led Read More …

Fil-Ams start first low-cost, multi-app funding platform for nonprofits

Flipcause co-founder Derrick Cagaanan CONTRIBUTED PHOTO SAN FRANCISCO – Online giving rose by 13 percent and continues to grow, a study revealed, which probably explains the recent proliferation of nonprofits. “There are 1.8 million nonprofits out there, and 30,000 organizations get nonprofit status every year,” reports Flipcause Co-founder and Community Director Derrick Cagaanan. Most nonprofits, he says, are small organizations with small operating budgets of $1 million. This is not a lot of money. And in the nonprofit space, the cost of doing good in the community is expensive. The technical tools for non-profit fundraising already exist online. “But they’re all over the place,” says Cagaanan. “(Although) the tools for donation collection, processing benefit ticket sales and database management for volunteer information in one form or another are there,” he explained. That’s where Flipcause can make the difference, according to Cagaanan. “For the first time in nonprofit industry, we are providing all this tech in a simple, easy to use platform that can be deployed within minutes on any nonprofit website,” Cagaanan says. Nonprofits don’t have to build it themselves. Flipcause doesn’t have to come to their sites and start ripping apart layers of codes. “We install our platform at the back end of their website and, instantly, they can recruit volunteers, sell tickets and take in donations,” explains Cagaanan. In the early 1990s, charities and various causes solicited with chain letters and petitions by e-mail. When web tools came out, it wasn’t long until influence marketing became a buzzword, Read More …
