Quevedo INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines will officially have its eighth cardinal with the formal elevation of Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo to the College of Cardinals in Rome on Saturday. When Quevedo receives his red hat and ring together with 15 other cardinals across the world from Pope Francis, his colleagues in Mindanao will start regarding him as the “cardinal for peace” because of his work and programs promoting peace in the conflict-stricken region. “We join in the spirit of joy and gratitude praising the Lord for giving us our first Mindanao cardinal,” said Iligan Bishop Elenito Galido in an interview over Church-run Radio Veritas yesterday. “He will be the cardinal for peacemaking especially in our aspiration for peace in Mindanao,” added the prelate. As a member of the Vatican’s College of Cardinals, Quevedo will assist the Pope in governing the Catholic Church. One of the main privileges of the College of Cardinals is to elect a successor following the death of the Pope. The 74-year-old prelate, who served as president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines from 1999 to 2003, will be the country’s second active cardinal, following Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle’s installation two years ago. The other Filipino cardinals are Rufino Santos, Julio Rosales, Jaime Sin, Ricardo Vidal, Jose Sanchez and Gaudencio Rosales. By Matikas SantosINQUIRER.net 4:55 pm | Monday, February 17th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines – A Filipina overseas worker in Macau and sole breadwinner of her family in the Philippines was killed in a car accident after participating in the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) worldwide walk event last Saturday. Imelda Ignacio-Austria, 48, was hit by a car as she was crossing a street on the morning of February 15, her husband Villamor Austria, 45, said in a phone interview with INQUIRER.net Monday. Fellow INC members in Macau were the ones who informed him of the tragic accident. Villamor said that he and their 14-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl rely on the remittances of Imelda as he has yet to get a job after his previous work in construction. A report by the Macau Daily Times published Monday said that the driver was “in his twenties,” and had passed the breathalyzer test, which measures blood alcohol levels. “She was crossing the road between the Macau Tower and Sai Van Lake Square with two other Filipino women at around 10 am on Saturday, before being hit by a private car,” it said. The report also said that police believe she may have been jaywalking. It did not state whether the driver has been detained. Elvin Jerome Austria Laceda, a nephew of Imelda, said that they are worried the driver will not be held accountable if it was found her aunt was jaywalking. “We are worried that they might have local laws there that would Read More …
INQUIRER.net US Bureau 4:49 pm | Sunday, February 16th, 2014 Joey Manahan HONOLULU – Joey Manahan, current Honolulu City Council Member and Filipino immigrant, declared his candidacy for Hawaii’s First Congressional District House seat. If elected, Manahan would be the first Filipino immigrant to serve in the US House of Representatives. “The American Dream is what led my mother to bring me to the US from the Philippines when I was just ten years old. This country gave us opportunities we otherwise would not have had and I’m so grateful for that,” said Manahan. “But today, too many Hawaiians feel that dream slipping through their fingers. We need leaders in Congress who understand what it takes to ensure that every person living in this great nation has the chance to succeed,” Manahan added. Manahan was born in Makati, Philippines and came to America with his mother, Maite. They first lived in San Jose, California, before moving to Honolulu. His grandfather was Dr. Constantino Manahan, a prominent obstetrician in the Philippines. In addition to his current role as City Council Member, Manahan previously was elected to the Hawaiʻi State House of Representatives and spent two years as the Vice Speaker of the Hawaiʻi Legislature. Michael Christian Martinez of the Philippines competes in the men’s short program figure skating competition at the Iceberg Skating Palace during the 2014 Winter Olympics, Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, in Sochi, Russia. AP For roughly a half hour on Friday, Michael Christian Martinez was the top male figure skater at the Sochi Olympics. He skated early in the finals, earning a score that put him ahead of several other athletes, including another young man from Kazakhstan where it was minus 27 Celsius as the competition was wrapping up. The top-ranked skaters eventually took over the competition, led by Japan’s Hanyu Yuzuru, who won the gold. Nobody really expected Martinez to win a medal, and he himself said was quoted in interviews that he’d be happy just to make it to the finals. And he did that just that, and with so much class that he impressed TV commentators and the international media who celebrate with Filipinos the incredible journey of Southeast Asia’s first Olympic competitor in figure skating. And one thing also is worth noting: Martinez didn’t finish last as one would expect. Instead the kid from a hot tropical country out-skated athletes from five countries with snowy and icy winters. Martinez finished 19th, but who would argue that it was still a triumphant performance? And we have to thank him for turning Sochi into a memorable Olympics for Filipinos, especially given the country’s recent forgettable summer Olympics . And we now could also look forward to the upcoming winter Read More …

By Nestor CorralesINQUIRER.net 3:31 pm | Saturday, January 18th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines—A child welfare party-list group on Saturday urged President Benigno Aquino III to “show teeth” in implementing the Anti-Child Pornography Law in the country. “If President Aquino really wants to end this worst form of abuse against our children and in order to stop the growing cottage industry of child pornography in the country, his administration must show some teeth in strongly implementing the existing child porn law and set an example by convicting culprits and masterminds,” Arlene Brosas, national secretary-general of Akap Bata Sectoral Organization. Akap Bata said the Aquino administration is doing nothing against criminal syndicates behind child pornography operations in the Philippines. The party-list group said that even before the recent report of international task force and agencies has been exposed, online and recorded pornography involving children has been one of the major local concerns that resulted to the passage of the Anti-Child Pornography Law in 2009. Brosas said that compared to other countries, child porn cases in the Philippines will get worse if the government will do nothing significant about the poor justice system and the system of impunity in the country. “Our lacking of an effective system that will protect our own children serves as an open invitation to criminal syndicates and child sex offenders to continue their operations in the country,” Brosas said. Akap Bata also egged on Aquino to resolve poverty as the root cause why children were being dragged to the Read More …
OVER SEA ROW By Kristine Angeli SabilloINQUIRER.net 2:27 pm | Saturday, January 18th, 2014 DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez. INQUIRER.net FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Saturday reiterated that it would proceed with arbitration procedures on the disputed areas of the South China Sea with or without China. However, DFA spokesperson Raul Hernandez said it wants China, as much as possible, to join the arbitration. “To this end, we reiterate our invitation to China to join us in arbitration as we intend to proceed with or without China for a final disposition,” Hernandez said in a text message to media. It followed the Chinese foreign ministry’s statement that it wants to meet the Philippines “halfway.” Hernandez also pointed out that the Hainan provincial government’s new fishing policy is only one of the several measures imposed by China on other countries. “Hainan fisheries law is only one of the unilateral measures by China to force a change in the regional status quo in order to advance its 9-dash line position of undisputed sovereignty over nearly the entire [South China Sea],” Hernandez said in a text message. He said the 9-dash line claim is a “gross violation of international law” that should be “fully addressed.” “In 2011, we had proposed to China that we should proceed with moving forward with our major bilateral agenda while abstracting the contentious issues and dealing with them separately. This became the content of a signed declaration between the Philippines and China’s presidents then. Read More …
Parents and relatives of the rescued children allegedly victims of Cyber Pornography cover their faces from press photographers and TV cameramen as they rush to the Women and Children Friendly Room in the NBI office for questioning after they were invited during the rescue operation with the US Homeland Security, NBI, Provincial Women Commission and PNP at the Municipality of Cordova. CDN FILE PHOTO LONDON—British police are working with Australian and US counterparts in breaking up a Philippine pedophile ring that has been streaming live scenes of child abuse over the Internet, the National Crime Agency (NCA) revealed on Thursday. The NCA, which has been investigating the ring since it discovered obscene videos on a British pedophile’s computer two years ago, called abuse in developing countries “a significant and emerging threat.” “This investigation has identified some extremely dangerous child sexual offenders who believed paying for children to be abused to order was something they could get away with,” said the agency’s Andy Baker. “Being thousands of miles away makes no difference to their guilt,” he said. “Protecting the victims of abuse is our priority and that means attacking every link in the chain, from dismantling the organized groups who are motivated by profit through to targeting their customers.” The inquiry—called Operation Endeavor—has covered 12 countries and led to the arrest of 17 Britons, five of whom have been convicted. Fifteen children aged between 6 and 15 have been rescued in a raid in Angeles City in the Philippines and several Read More …

The 6’5” former Public Advocate towered over the Fil-Ams, bending his neck as he beamed with them for photographs.
