Indonesia vows to defend ‘every inch’ of territory

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo, center, delivers his State of The Nation address ahead of the country’s Independence Day at the parliament building in Jakarta, Indonesia, Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016. AP President Joko Widodo pledged Tuesday to defend “every inch” of Indonesia’s land and maritime territory, following clashes with Chinese vessels around Indonesian islands in the South China Sea. In a state of the nation address he also said Indonesia was “actively involved” in seeking a peaceful solution to the broader regional dispute about ownership of islands in the Sea. Widodo’s underscoring of Indonesia’s sovereignty over the Natunas islands — and the resource-rich waters surrounding them — comes at a time of high maritime tensions between Beijing and Jakarta after repeated clashes there. “We are developing regions like Entikong, Natuna, and Atambua so the world can see that Indonesia is a big country, and every inch of its land and water is truly taken care of,” he said in a televised address which did not refer directly to China. Entikong and Atambua are remote Indonesian territories bordering Malaysia and East Timor respectively. His comments come as Jakarta prepares to mark independence day celebrations Wednesday by scuttling dozens of foreign boats seized for illegally fishing in Indonesian waters. The government has previously said that Chinese ships would be among those scuttled. The sinking in May of a large Chinese vessel ship caught fishing illegally around the Natunas drew a sharp rebuke from Beijing. Unlike several of its Southeast Asian neighbors, Indonesia has Read More …

BoC chief: If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear

INQUIRER.net By: Aries Joseph Hegina, August 23rd, 2015 04:02 PM Customs Commissioner Alberto Lina. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO/RICHARD A. REYES Bureau of Customs (BoC) Commissioner Alberto Lina said that if overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have nothing to hide, they should not be afraid if the government agency will implement stricter inspections on the balikbayan boxes they send out to their families in the Philippines. “Kung hindi prohibited, bakit ka matatakot? Kung iyan ay hindi dutiable, bakit ka matatakot? (If the contents of the balikbayan boxes are not prohibited, why will you be afraid? If the contents are not dutiable, why will you be afraid?)” Lina said in an interview on radio dzMM on Sunday. He said that if the value of the contents of the balikbayan boxes does not exceed P10,000, then it is not dutiable and taxable. Lina plans to implement stringent rules on inspecting balikbayan boxes supposedly to protect the country from smugglers. The plan would entail opening balikbayan boxes randomly. READ: BoC assures OFWs: We are not after your ‘pasalubong’ BoC estimated that it is losing P60 million a year due to “undervalued” products being sent to the country through balikbayan boxes by smugglers. Ebola watch continues; more quarantine facilities needed

This undated file image made available by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows the Ebola virus. AP FILE PHOTO/CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL MANILA, Philippines—With the 21-DAY quarantine for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other travelers from Ebola-stricken countries continuing, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Tuesday it was looking for other places to hold them temporarily. DOH spokesperson Lyndon Lee Suy said the department was considering putting up quarantine facilities in Luzon and the Visayas, preferably near airports. “There are areas currently being surveyed as possible quarantine areas, including Fort Magsaysay, and we welcome such a generous offer from the local government,” Lee Suy told reporters in an interview. Nueva Ecija Gov. Aurelio Umali had proposed that a portion of the sprawling military camp in the province be turned into a quarantine facility. In the meantime, Lee Suy said, arriving passengers from the Ebola-stricken West African countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea would continue to be held for 21 days in the former administration building of Nayong Pilipino in Pasay City. “For now, we will continue to use that one near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport,” he said. Lee Suy said the government had never stopped imposing the 21-day quarantine on all passengers arriving from Ebola-afflicted countries. “There was no letup in screening passengers from those countries even if the people had lost interest in the issue the past few months,” he said.
