Nicki Minaj apologizes for ‘offensive’ video

NEW YORK — Nicki Minaj (photo) is apologizing for a video that some feel uses Nazi imagery. The rapper posted on Twitter Tuesday that she didn’t create the concept for the lyric video for her song Only. She wrote: “(I) take full responsibility if it has offended anyone. I’d never condone Nazism in my art.” The animated video, which debuted Friday, features a swarm of soldiers with red armbands featuring a logo that has been compared to a swastika. The logo also appears on Minaj’s chest in the clip. The logo features the acronym “YM,” which stands for Young Money, the rap group featuring Minaj, Lil Wayne and Drake. Both rappers are featured on the song along with Chris Brown. The video has more than two million views. Minaj also tweeted that the video’s producer and the “person in charge” of overseeing the video are both Jewish. Minaj faced similar criticism earlier this year when she used of a photo of Malcolm X with a rifle in his hands and juxtaposed it with a racial slur for a song’s artwork.

Richard ‘Ser Chief/Papa Chen’ Yap with Lester Pimentel Ong (one of his business partners) at Wangfu Chinese Bistro which is celebrating its first anniversary. Right: With his wife Melody and their children Ashley and Dylan in the Manulife commercial.     Until end of November when the phenomenal hit Kapamilya soap Be Careful With My Heart closes, Richard Yap and leading lady Jodi Santamaria will have to shoot more episodes. Only then can Richard, fondly called worldwide (thanks to The Filipino Channel) either Ser Chief (his character) or Papa Chen, make up for missed opportunities to spend more time with family and friends. He has been keeping a hectic (read: punishing) schedule, admitted Richard sans regrets. After all, the soap turned him into a superstar beyond his wildest dream. “For the first year and a half,” said Richard over lunch during the first-anniversary celebration of Wangfu (at the corner of Tomas Morato Avenue and Roces Avenue Quezon City), one of the restaurants he co-owns with two friends, “we would shoot five days a week. Early this year, the schedule was medyo lighter. But since we are finishing episodes for the show’s ending, we are back to five-days-a-week shoot.” On the side, Richard manages to shoot for The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin (with Vice Ganda reprising his role in an earlier movie) which is Star Cinema’s entry in this December’s Metro Filmfest. The Manila staging of Beauty And The Beast brought to life specifically by the original Broadway creative team in celebration of the musical’s 20th anniversary will take place at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) from Jan. 11 to 25, 2015.   MANILA, Philippines – “I can’t wait to see Manila and perform for the Filipino audience,” gushed actress Hilary Maiberger, who plays Belle in the first-ever international tour of Disney’s timeless classic Beauty And The Beast, which will hit Manila January 2015. “I haven’t been to Asia, but the Philippines already has a soft spot in my heart because one of my best friends Laura is Filipino,” the gorgeous California-native told The Philippine STAR at a recent press conference for the 10-country tour of the musical which kicked off last Oct. 8 in Istanbul, Turkey. “Laura, in fact, is going to the Philippines to see me and catch the show. I’m so excited to meet the people, see the beautiful beaches and try delicious food.” Darick Pead, who plays the Beast, is also a first-timer in Asia and is learning about the Philippines with the help of his brother, who served for two years as a church missionary in Cebu City. “My brother has a lot of Filipino friends there and he has been telling me about the buses and jeepneys and how crazy and exciting it is to travel in the Philippines,” Pead said. “I’ve also been checking out blogs about the Philippines. Q and A: Miles Teller on 'Whiplash,' ambition and Elvis

Miles Teller poses for a portrait to promote his new film, “Whiplash,” in New York. The film is an acclaimed indie about an aspiring jazz drummer and his drill sergeant instructor. Dan Hallman/Invision/AP How badly does Miles Teller want it? In “Whiplash,” he plays an aspiring jazz drummer at a Julliard-like New York music conservatory, playing until his hands bleed to meet the impossible standards of his oppressively perfectionist teacher (J.K. Simmons). The movie, a festival hit since winning a heap of awards at Sundance, rhythmically beats on the theme of ambition and its high sacrifices. Teller, too, is an up-and-comer, tagged as one of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars. He landed his first movie role, 2010’s “Rabbit Hole,” partly because Nicole Kidman was impressed that he — playing a fragile kid weighed by guilt from a fatal car accident — blushed in the audition. Like his “Whiplash” character, Andrew, Teller can play the drums, and spent three weeks cramming to learn to play the jazz pieces of the film. The Florida-native was schooled in New York, too, studying acting at New York University’s Lee Strasburg Theatre and Film Institute. Speaking to the candid, jokey Teller, the confident, frat-boy charm he showed in “Project X” and “21 & Over” comes through. But so does the clear-eyed ambition of the sensitive actor of “The Spectacular Now” who will also soon be inducted into the superhero realm, playing Mr. Fantastic in “The Fantastic Four.” But the Oscar-buzzed “Whiplash” sounds Teller’s serious aspirations. He’d Read More …

Making his Mark in London

Mark points to the sign leading to the rehearsal stage for Here Lies Love at the sprawling National Theatre where the musical is scheduled from October to January next year – Photos by RICKY LO   LONDON — First, a little clarification: Unlike Rachelle Ann Go (who’s a smash as Gigi in Miss Saigon, currently playing at the Prince Edward Theater) and the other Filipino talents before her (led by Lea Salonga who originated the role of Kim in the same musical), Mark Bautista will take a bow on world stage as Ferdinand Marcos in the musical Here Lies Love not at the West End but at the National Theatre at the south side of this city. “I would say that the National Theatre is like our CCP back home,” said Mark as he welcomed me into the sprawling theater complex. “Only, it’s much, much bigger.” I could have walked from the Strand Palace Hotel (where journalists invited to the junket for Universal Pictures’ Dracula Untold, starring Luke Evans, were billeted…but more on that later) but I didn’t want to miss my appointment with Mark set before I left Manila, so I took a cab (fare was 20 pounds, roughly P2,000). Mark and two castmates (one a Filipino dancer from  Repertory and the other an artist from Hong Kong who performed in Disneyland) are staying at a three-room house 40 minutes by train to National Theatre, paid for by the producer. “Come,” he gestured toward the NT complex, “I’ll take Read More …
