MANILA, Philippines – 2015 promises to be a good year for Philippine puppetry as far as Wanlu (photo) is concerned. On March 19 to 21 at Resorts World Manila, in celebration of World Puppetry Day, Wanlu holds his fourth Battle of Ventriloquists, plus an exhibit of ASEAN puppetry arts which will include performances by puppeteers from Indonesia and Singapore. Wanlu also organized, with the help of Terence Tan from Singapore, an ASEAN Puppetry Exchange between Indonesia and the Philippines. In April, Wanlu has been invited by the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to hold two puppetry workshops. Wanlu finds it special considering the fact that the Philippines does not have its own puppetry art while Malaysia is famous for Wayang Kulit or shadow puppetry. “We might not have our own puppetry art but Pinoy puppeteers are very good with ventriloquism and hand puppetry. In fact, we are probably the best in Asia,” Wanlu explains. Dr. Luy Chee Luen of the University of Malaya has scheduled two puppetry workshops — one inside the university for students and faculties and one in a library in downtown Malaysia. From Malaysia, Wanlu flies to Tokyo, Japan to take part in the ventriloquist convention organized by the Japan Ventriloquists Association (JVA). JVA president Takeshi Ikeda has asked Wanlu to show the members of their organization how ventriloquism and puppetry were used in Tacloban after Supertyphoon Yolanda. From Japan, Wanlu flies back to Manila for several school shows for Dolan and Jolly Cow Fresh Read More …
In this Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 file photo, singer Robin Thicke performs at the 17th Annual GRAMMY Foundation Legacy Concert at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP, File LOS ANGELES — A jury awarded Marvin Gaye’s children nearly $7.4 million Tuesday after determining singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams copied their father’s music to create “Blurred Lines,” the biggest hit song of 2013. Gaye’s daughter Nona Gaye wept as the verdict was read and was hugged by her attorney. “Right now, I feel free,” she said outside court. “Free from … Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.” “Blurred Lines” has sold more than 7.3 million copies in the U.S. alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures. It earned a Grammy Awards nomination and netted Williams and Thicke millions of dollars. The case was a struggle between two of music’s biggest names: Williams has sold more than 100 million records worldwide during his career as a singer-producer, and Gaye performed hits such as “Sexual Healing” and “How Sweet It Is (To be Loved by You)” remain popular. The verdict could tarnish the legacy of Williams, a reliable hit-maker who has won Grammy Awards and appears on NBC’s music competition show “The Voice.” He and Thicke are “undoubtedly disappointed,” said their lead attorney, Howard King. “They’re unwavering in their absolute conviction that they wrote this song independently,” he said. That was the first question I asked Chinese actor-singer Eddie Peng as soon as he sat down for this interview at the recent launch of the first Longines mono-brand boutique in the Philippines at the second floor of SM Megamall’s Building A. “Hahahaha,” laughed Eddie, “yes, it always does. It never fails.” An Aries (Western horoscope) and a Dog (Chinese zodiac), Eddie was born on March 24, 1982 in Taipei where he’s known as Peng Yu-yan. Eddie migrated to Vancouver at age 13 and studied at the University of British Columbia where he majored in Economics. His dream to be a businessman was nipped in the bud when he went back to Taipei because of his grandmother’s death. He got stuck in his birth place when he was discovered by director Yang Daqing who cast him in the TV series The White Paper of Love. Goodbye, business! Hello, acting! There was no stopping Eddie since then. Described as having “an open personality,” Eddie works not only in Taiwanese projects but also those in Korean. MANILA, Philippines – The entry of KZ Tandingan and Kyla into the Cornerstone Entertainment fold can be likened to an already talent-loaded basketball squad beefed up even more by the acquisition of two more high-caliber talents. Both accomplished and popular in their own right, KZ and Kyla strengthened the standing of the talent management house in the entertainment business, especially in its label as the home to some of the country’s best performers. Cornerstone, which already branched out to music production and publishing, as well as concert production, promotion and event staging, handles the careers of some of the brightest names in the entertainment scene — Richard Poon, Sam Milby, Yeng Constantino, Erik Santos, Angeline Quinto, Jericho Rosales and Rachelle Ann Go. It is also behind the rising careers of Markki Stroem, Thor, Liezel Garcia, Moira, Young JV and Iñigo Pascual. The addition of KZ, who burst into the music scene after winning the grand prize at the first season of The X Factor Philippines in 2012, and of Kyla, acknowledged as the country’s leading female R&B act, will give Cornerstone’s stable of singers the extra glitter as they bring with them their storied background. Their entry couldn’t have come at a better time. The company, founded by president and managing director Erickson Raymundo, is now celebrating its 10th year. KZ easily moved out of the shadow of that breakout win she was blessed with three years back. She has evolved to be an artist who dares to be different Read More …

American balladeer David Pomeranz has an upcoming project mainly dedicated to Filipinos as his way of saying thank you MANILA, Philippines – The thrill factor of having balladeer David Pomeranz in the country may have kind of diminished the fact that he’s often here — two to three times a year to be more precise about it. It seems like we’re cut from the same cloth and have a similar bloodstream. We like a lot of the same things,” shared the recording artist whose works have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. The voice behind perennial prom night theme tracks King and Queen of Hearts and Got to Believe in Magic is presently promoting his 13-track Greatest Hits album released by Polyeast Records, including, of course, the two just mentioned and others like On This Day, Undying Admiration and Born For You. It also has a new number, the single Crazy Beautiful, which he co-wrote because “you don’t fall in love with a woman’s lipstick, but on her uniqueness and what’s going on in her eyes.” Entertainment ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 Sensibly, he has an upcoming Read More …
