Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin allowed Brown to remain free until a March 20 hearing when the judge will receive an update from probation officials. AP, File/Photo by Andrew Estey/Invision LOS ANGELES — A judge has revoked Chris Brown’s probation but allowed him to remain free for now after the R&B singer traveled without approval for a concert and failed to complete community service on time. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin allowed Brown to remain free until a March 20 hearing when the judge will receive an update from probation officials. Brown was ordered by probation officials in December not to leave Los Angeles County without permission. The Grammy-winning singer performed in San Jose recently without obtaining permission to travel. Attorney Mark Geragos told Brandlin that his office incorrectly advised Brown he didn’t need permission. Brown has been on probation for his 2009 attack on pop singer Rihanna, then his girlfriend. Brown was supposed to complete 1,000 hours of community labor by the end of January, but he still has roughly 200 hours to complete. The judge said Brown had been making steady Read More …

MANILA, Philippines – With her screen name and the brand of comedy she is associated with, indeed it is hard to imagine Pokwang as a dramatic actress. Her punchlines on- and off-screen can send one rolling on the floor. For one, she arrives in the presscon with proper welcome bouquet and as though that isn’t enough, she showers herself with petals imagining them as a shower of confetti on her make-believe parade. She relishes the moment as the crowd bursts into laughter. Indeed, she is quick to demolish herself as a serious person with punchlines and antics that easily give a wrong impression she cannot go beyond comedy. For one, she treats the English language as an invitation to make fun of herself. Director John Lazatin relates Pokwang literally had fever on first day of shooting of Edsa Woolworth, where she plays the title role. Her supporting cast is mostly made up of Americans and Fil-Americans — and how would she fare in the language she claims is just too strange to her? Entertainment ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 She would start an interview with kittenish requests like, “Sir, huwag naman sobrang lalim ng English” or “Puede Taglish na lang Sir?” Rues direk John: “As I see it, comedy is just a façade in her reel and real life. Behind a funny woman is an actor who can look at her own life and accept it on her own terms. Her real life is virtual teleserye and I thought there must be Read More …

In this Nov. 18, 2013 file photo, actor-comedian Bill Cosby poses for a portrait in New York. A lawyer for Judith Huth who is suing Cosby alleging the comedian sexually abused her when she was 15 years old says he has interviewed two witnesses who corroborate her story. Attorney Marc Strecker wrote in a sworn declaration filed Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, in Los Angeles Superior Court that he also has reviewed photographs of his client with Cosby at the Playboy Mansion when she was age 15. Victoria Will/Invision/AP, File BOSTON (AP) — Two women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual offenses decades ago have joined a defamation lawsuit, contending the comedian publicly branded them as liars through statements by his representatives. The amended complaint was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Springfield, in western Massachusetts, where Cosby has a home in Shelburne Falls. Cosby is the only defendant in the lawsuit, originally filed last month by Tamara Green, who said he drugged and assaulted her in the 1970s. The two new plaintiffs are Therese Serignese, who said he drugged and raped her in 1976, and Linda Traitz, who alleges he tried to drug her and then sexually groped her in 1970. Attorney Joseph Cammarata, who represents the three women, said the civil action allows them to have their allegations heard since criminal statutes of limitation have expired. “The lawsuit provides an opportunity for women who claim to have been harmed to have their day in court in a forum where Read More …
Anita Linda in the 2008 film Adela directed by Adolfo Alix Jr. As is the established pattern of Philippine movies, veteran actors need to kiss their careers goodbye once they reach within shouting distance of becoming a senior citizen. The premium on youth is such that there is an expiration date on young stars who are launched at 16, and after playing grandmother in the movies slowly fade away. This is a pattern accepted with happy exceptions like Gina Pareño, Eddie Garcia and Anita Linda. At her advanced age, Anita (Alice Lake in real life) had been content to live her life with daughter Francesca and her three children in Alabang Hills where Anita has stayed for 20 years, tending the garden and caring for her two cats. This was the schedule of her day-to-day life until Adela came along and changed her life immensely. Adela was the Cinemalaya entry of a woman going 90 and who celebrates her birthday alone when her children fail to visit her. The film directed by Adolfo Alix Jr. opened the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and went on to win the young Critics Circle Best Film of 2008. It gave Anita the Best Actress awards in the Southeast Asia Film Competition category of the Cinemanila International Film Festival and at the Gawad Tanglaw Awards by academicians.
