4 ways to stay healthy this holiday season

MANILA, Philippines – The holiday season is upon us. With plenty of time to party and indulge in sumptuous food and drinks, it is easy to lose track of one’s fitness goals. But don’t let the holidays ruin your good health. Instead, use this period to improve yourself. “By practicing healthy habits, you can take care of your health and well-being this season and all year long,” says Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of MediCard Philippines, a leading HMO provider in the country. Here are four ways to stay healthy this season: 1) Eat and drink moderately. Holiday treats are yummy, but most of them are packed with calories, fat, and sugar. To prevent overeating, condition your mind and body to stop eating before you’re satisfied. Eat a light snack before going to a party and when you’re there, eat food in small portions. Try to include vegetables and fruits on your plate to have fiber. If you overeat during one meal, go light on the next. Keep your drinking habits in moderation, whether the beverages are alcoholic or not. Intoxicating drinks can induce overeating and reduce your inhibitions while the non-alcoholic ones are mostly full of calories and sugar. If you feel thirsty or tired, it’s always better to drink water. 2) Exercise regularly. You may not have the time to hit the gym for your regular workout during the busy season, but this doesn’t mean you need to stop exercising altogether. While you’re at home, do about 10-minute push-ups Read More …

Be healthy and holiday-ready

Look and C: Vitamin C, like Poten-Cee, helps boost the immune system and provide the body with defense against certain diseases such as the common colds and flu. MANILA, Philippines – It’s that time of year again when you need to look and feel your best! With so many holiday shindigs and New Year parties, one cannot simply miss the fun and happenings because of stress and illness. What to do? Start your daily vitamin C supplementation to not only help boost your immune system, but to also help you look good. Here are top tips from Poten-Cee for a “Ho! Ho! Ho!” holiday and a healthier 2015. • Get all charged up. Parties may be a lot of fun with all the eating, dancing, smoking, and drinking, but they can also suck up your energy and decrease your ability to fight infection. Tip: Get enough sleep if you know you’re staying up late.  Be careful with your food and alcohol intake and, most especially, avoid smoking. Ascorbic acid like Poten-Cee is one of the antioxidants, which together help reduce the damage to the body caused by toxic chemicals such as cigarette smoke and preservatives. • Don’t stifle that sniffle. Occasional sniffles accompanied by bouts of sneezing could be a symptom of the flu virus. Don’t be the party pooper who cancels on parties to nurse a cold. Tip: Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that helps boost the immune system; thus, helps provide the body with defense against certain Read More …

Safe and nutritious ‘baon’ begins at home

Out-of-the-box baon: Get creative with your kid’s baon. When assembling the bento box, use GladWare food protection containers to help seal in the goodness. These come in different sizes to best match your kid’s baon of the day. MANILA, Philippines – Protecting your child’s baon doesn’t just begin the moment your kid steps out the door to go to school. Before a sandwich or rice meal makes its way into your child’s lunch box, it first exists in the form of essential ingredients that need to be stored and handled properly so that the prepared baon stays fresh longer and uncontaminated right through recess and lunch time. According to the article “Food Safety Tips for Healthy Eating” by Dr. Lourdes Jacobo, different types of bacteria can multiply rapidly in most foods such that millions of them can fit on a pinhead, thriving in temperatures between 5° and 60°C. However, these risks shouldn’t scare parents from preparing school meals in their own kitchens. Making school snacks at home can be a way to ensure that the food the children are eating will adequately furnish 1/3 of their daily food requirements. The 7th National Nutrition Survey by FNRI discloses that a mere 1/5 of school-aged children met the recommended intake for energy (21.5%) and vitamin A (19.6%), while only half met the recommended protein intake (54.7%) for the day. Taking extra precaution is the key to reducing exposure to food poisoning, and a good place to start is when one buys safe Read More …

Protecting bones from calcium deficiency

Chew good: CalChews is fortified with vitamin D3 for proper calcium absorption, bone growth, and bone remodeling.                                      MANILA, Philippines – Of all the conditions associated with calcium deficiency, most people have heard of osteoporosis.  It’s a debilitating ailment that causes bones to become weak and fragile. Even simple everyday routines can lead to fractures in persons suffering from this progressive bone condition.  But did you know that there’s another common disease resulting from calcium deficiency? “Hypocalcemia can be caused by hormonal imbalance or malabsorption of calcium in the intestines,” notes Dr. Francis H. Fernandez, an orthopedic surgeon at Makati Medical Center, with a fellowship in Sports Medicine from Atos Klinik, Heidelberg, Germany. “Ninety-nine percent of calcium is stored in the bones and teeth and it is primarily used in the formation and healing of the bones. Since most of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones, the body needs to break down the bone in order to utilize the calcium for other functions. Conversely, in order to rebuild bone and form new ones, the body also needs calcium to be adequate,” Dr. Fernandez explains. “Calcium deficiency, therefore, could increase the risk of developing osteoporosis because there wouldn’t be enough calcium to form new bones,” he adds. Taking the recommended daily dose of calcium can spell a big difference for people at risk of bone diseases. In particular, women undergoing menopause are susceptible to bone breakage due to their skeletal frame and declining estrogen levels.  Those who are Read More …

7 of 10 at risk of chronic illnesses with vitamin D deficiency

MANILA, Philippines – With a number of Filipinos aggressively taking on healthy lifestyles, it is surprising to know that many people are still afflicted by osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases. Many factors may contribute to the development of these illnesses and one of the most talked about by experts today is vitamin D deficiency. A study commissioned by pharmaceutical leader United Laboratories, Inc. (Unilab) found that seven out of 10 working Filipinos suffer from vitamin D deficiency. Of the over 5,000 participants tested, more than 70 percent were found to be vitamin D deficient without them even knowing it. The study also found that there is a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among women. Hi-Precision Diagnostics, a Department of Health licensed medical facility, collected, assayed, and interpreted the results based on international laboratory standards, with 30 ng/ml blood level of vitamin D serving as the baseline for deficiency. Those who registered below the level set were deemed vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D synthesizes calcium and phosphorus from the food we eat, keeping bones strong and capable of self-recuperation. Aside from making the body’s defense system respond faster and more efficient against foreign invaders, vitamin D also stabilizes heart and blood pressure, regulates insulin secretion by the pancreas, and promotes proper muscle formation and brain development. The sun is the body’s natural source of vitamin D and those who shun or have very little exposure to it become susceptible to vitamin D deficiency. Having dark skin, staying indoors Read More …

Knee arthritis: A fresh look at treatment options

When a disaster strikes, it pays to be knowledgeable about what to do. Makati Medical Center gives tips on what we can do to possibly minimize damage and injury to person and property. Being prepared makes you more focused to deal with the situation at hand.   There is a 50-50 chance that, at some point in your life, you’ll develop osteoarthritis (OA).  Not great odds, considering how much this joint condition can be disabling to you — affecting ambulation and many activities of daily living. The pain and limited mobility in OA occur as the cartilage that cushions the space between bones wears away with age and overuse.  Left bare of their padding, bones rub painfully against each other — particularly in the hands, spine, knees, and hips. There are many options for managing the symptoms of knee OA, such as pain, swelling, and stiffness.  But which options truly work?  The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) last year updated its clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of knee OA after reviewing the scientific literature and assessing the benefits and harms of care options.  Here’s a look at what they found. Diet and exercise When you have aching knees, getting up to exercise may be the last thing on your mind.  But no therapy has a bigger, more consistent payoff than exercise, according to the analysis of the evidence-based literature.  And you don’t necessarily need fancy equipment or gym membership.  One study found that people with OA in one Read More …

How to Make Christmas More Meaningful for Your Family

Christmas is just weeks away, and many of us have already started preparing for it by decorating our homes, buying presents, and maybe even planning for an out-of-town trip. For some people though, Christmas preparations can be quite stressful, and may even take away from the joy and wonder of the season. Don’t let that happen to you (and your family). Take the time to make this Christmas a truly meaningful one for you and yours. Here are some tips to help you out: 1. Start a special Christmas tradition. Homeschooling is such a blessing to our family in so many ways — one of which is that I get to learn about so many beautiful traditions associated with our Catholic faith. I especially love those that are related to liturgical seasons like Christmas and Advent. Over the years, our family has made some of these traditions our own, and our Christmases have been so much more meaningful because of them. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: For a list of meaningful Christmas traditions that you can start with your own family, try checking out this one by The Learning Basket. It contains most, if not all, of the traditions that we have, too — although I must admit that on some years, we don’t get to do all of them. 2. Give gifts that give life. After Super Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines last year, my husband and I decided to forego buying Christmas gifts for Read More …
