New York’s UniPro launches chapter in San Diego, California

Hon. Consul General Audie de Castro opens the UniPro San Diego launch. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO SAN DIEGO, California – More than 50 members of the Filipino community here on February 6 welcomed the new San Diego chapter of the New York City-based Pilipino American Unity for Progress (UniPro). The gathering at the United Domestic Workers of America (UDW) Community Hall was co-sponsored by UDW, National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) and Silayan Filipina. Consul General Audie de Castro urged the audience to strive for unity and to promote Filipino American interests in San Diego. “In the past couple of years, our community has worked together better than ever.  A major reason is that I have seen many of you reach out to all generations and to others with different political views.  This is the best time for UniPro to be created in San Diego. I look forward to working with all of you.” Small group discussions tackled what UniPro can do to serve the San Diego area. Some of the recurring themes included the needs for improved communication, greater visibility in the political sphere and professional and personal development. Some of the possible solutions presented were the creation of a Filipino community center, a database of Filipino American organizations in San Diego, regular town hall meetings and leadership and mentorship programs in the community. Hearth Angel: Food videoblogger Liza De Guia

FoodCurated videoblogger Liza de Guia on location at a market. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO First posted in PositivelyFilipino.com “Everyone has something interesting hidden in their hearts. I’d like to tell their story,” says Liza de Guia. De Guia, chief storyteller of the video blog, Food Curated, is a young and multi-awarded Filipina journalist living her dream in New York. Here’s the story of her stories. The Food Curated video captured it. The chef spoke no English, but I understood. “I give people my torta, I say ‘good luck,’” says Chef Galdino, a New York food trucker, as he piles ingredients into tortas, Latin sandwiches with pan-seared pork slices, cheese slabs, slivers of lettuce, tomato and onion, slathered with seasonings. The camera zooms a close-up as he serves a sandwich to a hungry customer. The food truck is in Corona, Queens, NYC, but who can resist getting a torta after seeing this? De Guia’s biweekly FoodCurated.com features story after story of the undiscovered food artisan, chef, restaurant, or craft. She presents a finely produced story with every edition on her TV series. After every show, the unknown person, product, or place featured becomes so well recognized business booms for them. De Guia has helped so many with her storytelling. It is no surprise she has been recognized by peers and received so many prestigious awards. Food Curated went on the air in 2009. 11.4 million have signed up for Obamacare coverage

LOS ANGELES — More than 11 million individuals signed up for or renewed health insurance under options made available through the Affordable Care Act, the White House announced February 17. “The Affordable Care Act is working,” President Barack Obama said in a video posted on Facebook. “It’s working a little better than we anticipated.” Sunday, February 15, was the biggest enrollment day ever, the White House said. “In the final day, we had more consumers sign up than we’ve ever had last year or this year in terms of those numbers,” Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in the Facebook video. The figure of 11.4 million who have health insurance through Obamacare, however, is a preliminary one that could grow or shrink depending on certain scenarios. This number could be greater, as the administration is offering those who started but weren’t able to complete applications a grace period that ends February 22. But the final number could decline if people who have signed up for coverage in 2015 do not follow through in paying their premiums. For instance, in 2014, 8 million consumers had initially signed up. However, by fall, only 6.7 million remained in the program; some of those who left found other coverage through a job. The majority of Americans obtain health insurance through Medical, Medicaid or their employers, but an additional 10 million uninsured individuals gained insurance last year through the coverage expansion. Some states expanded Medicaid, while another part of the law provides workers and families Read More …

After Mamasapano, can Filipinos still rally to the Flag?

China’s leaders in Beijing must be grinning from ear to ear, toasting their champagne glasses and cheering “Gan Bei!” It has been three weeks since a Chinese ship deliberately rammed three boats carrying 29 Filipino fishermen in Panatag Shoal (Scarborough Shoal) and there have been no protest demonstrations denouncing China’s unprovoked aggression. The 29 Filipino fishermen reported that they had been out at sea for five days when the huge waves and strong winds of a powerful storm caused them to seek refuge in the shallow waters of the Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal). They described to Philippine authorities that on January 29, 2015 they saw at least 10 Chinese vessels patrolling the shoal with armed personnel. One Chinese ship then steered in their direction straight for their outriggers to force them out of the shoal, which is only 125 miles from Zambales and 550 miles from the nearest Chinese port, well within the Philippines’ 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). But all the Philippine government could do for its helpless fishermen was to file a diplomatic protest against China for yet another provocation. In stark contrast, last year when China’s ships rammed Vietnamese fishing vessels that were protesting China’s installation of a $1 billion oil rig within Vietnam’s EEZ, the Vietnamese people erupted with anti-China riots all over Vietnam, forcing China to withdraw its oil rig and its ships in and to repatriate 3,000 Chinese workers back to China. Flexing its muscles  China’s January 29 attack on Filipino fishing vessels is another example Read More …

Fall fashion is fluid for Lhuillier, layered for Natori

From Natori’s Istanbul-inspired fall collection. NEW YORK CITY — Nothing can stop fashionistas from celebrating the annual Fashion Week here, not even brutal winter weather described by meteorologists as record low temperatures and high winds that could cause frostbite on exposed skin in about half an hour. The show must go on despite such harsh conditions. After all, fashion is more profitable than football as revealed by a new congressional study. While last year’s Super Bowl brought in $500 million in revenue, New York fashion week returns nearly $900 million to the city’s economy. No wonder the City of New York gives its full support to visiting designers and media from all over the world. Manila Mail was invited to a dozen Fall 2015 runway shows happening until February 19 onsite and off Lincoln Center, venue of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Two of the featured designers are renowned Filipinas: celebrity designer Monique Lhuillier and fashion mogul Josie Natori. Journey to Istanbul With Japanese husband Ken, Natori kicked off the weeklong celebration and took her audience on a journey to Istanbul, the historic crossroads where “East meets West.” Josie Natori “This inspiration is all about Istanbul,” said the former commissioner of the White House Conference on Small Business. “It’s one of my favorite cities and inspiration. I’ve been there a number of times. I’ve got a collection from there. All these swatches, textiles and shapes are from there. All these embellishments are a wonderful way to express that.” Models interpreted 40 pieces Read More …

America’s Filipina War Brides

First posted in PositivelyFilipino.com World War II was quickly coming to an end. Manila was a jungle of wreckage. Office buildings, churches, homes, hotels, factories and docks lay in ruin. In other parts of the country, people poked through similar scenes of destruction, looking for food or belongings or the remains of family members killed by either the retreating Japanese or the bombardment of the advancing Americans. “Our family survived by gathering wild cassavas, bananas, guavas, pineapple and jackfruit,” recalled Flory Bautista, then a teenager in war-torn Leyte. “There was never enough food, but we hardly thought about it because we were afraid. We just wanted to survive.” A few months later, Bautista would leave behind that tragic chapter of Philippine history and sail for America as the “war bride” of a Filipino serviceman in Uncle Sam’s army. Her journey was part of a larger phenomenon—the beginning of the Second Wave of Filipino immigration to the United States. The Second Wave of Filipino immigration was short in duration but profound in its impact on the size and composition of the Filipino community in America. The bulk of the wave came into the United States directly after the war, between 1946 and 1953, as Filipinos who served in the armed services were granted U.S. citizenship for their contribution to the war effort. Many of these servicemen had been living in the United States before the war as younger members of the First Wave of immigration. Returning with their Florys, they would, Read More …

Cerritos, California’s first Fil-Am mayor seeks re-election

CERRITOS, California — In the last four years, the city of Cerritos issued a historic high of 708 business licenses. It also posted a record year in sales with nearly $3 billion, which helped generate close to $30 million in sales tax. This money goes into the city’s general fund, which helps provide programs and services for Cerritos residents. These are numbers that the city’s mayor, Mark Pulido, is proud to share as he nears the end of his first term as the first Filipino-American to have held the position. “I’m so honored and humbled to serve as the first mayor of Filipino ancestry in the city of Cerritos,” he told the Asian Journal  Febrary 10 at a local Filipino-owned Cerritos cafe. “It took our community four decades to realize full political empowerment by having an elected representative have a seat at the table and to give a voice issues and concerns of the Filipino community.” Not done yet But simply because this particular chapter in his political career is coming to a close on a positive note doesn’t mean he’s ready to conclude his story yet. With the upcoming March 3 primary in just a few weeks, Pulido is busy campaigning with his sights set on serving his beloved hometown for another four years. He has called Cerritos home for 42 years and counting, and his determination to further improve the city is evident. There’s humble pride in Pulido’s demeanor when he talks about how much the city has progressed since he first took Read More …

Filipina faces several fraud charges in Canada

TORONTO, Canada – A Filipino woman in this city has been charged with immigration fraud that preyed on the Filipino community, the Toronto Police Service reports. Police allege more than 500 people from six different countries may have been defrauded by GoWest Jobs International of a total of more than $1.5 million. GoWestJobs is a recruiting agency. The police probe investigation began in October. Workers were allegedly recruited from other countries for jobs in Canada. A large number of Filipinos were among the applicants. GoWest asked for payment for documents, references and employment contracts. According to police, the applications were submitted to the government agency in the applicant’s home country. US Navy intel officer says China gearing for war

SAN FRANCISCO — China is flexing its muscles and preparing for military conflict in Asia, the outgoing intelligence chief of the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet recently warned. The warning came amid Beijing’s feverish reclamation efforts in disputed reefs and islets in the South China Sea that analysts said could be converted into naval and air force bases to project its military might and dominate China’s smaller neighbors. “The strategic trend lines indicate the Communist Party of China is not only ‘rejuvenating’ itself for internal stability purposes, but has been and continues to prepare to use military force,” Navy Capt. James E. Fanell said during a speech January 31 before more than 100 guests, including several admirals, at Pearl Harbor. The straight-shooting intelligence officer, who is retiring after more than 28 years in the Navy, said it would be unwise for the United States to ignore or paper over the warning signs of China’s increasingly aggressive behavior. “…[L]et’s not deceive ourselves. The evidence I’ve been chewing on over the past 15 years is overwhelming,” Fanell said in a blunt warning first reported by the Washington Beacon. “Beijing has prepared for military action and [Chinese] President Xi Jinping’s ‘China Dream’ has a defined timeline to reach this ‘rejuvenated’ end state.” Fannel urged his fellow intelligence officials to present honest assessments of the danger posed by China’s growing military power, an oblique reference to what officials consider as numerous U.S. intelligence failures in assessing China’s military build up over the last few decades. ‘Tell the Read More …

Cell phone thefts down sharply in SF, NY, London due to kill switches

FILE PHOTO NEW YORK – New crime data shows that smartphone thefts and robberies have declined dramatically in New York City, London and San Francisco since the wireless industry began to implement “kill switches” on their devices. Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, London Mayor Boris Johnson and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón released the data. The three co-chair the Secure Our Smartphones (SOS) Initiative, an international partnership of law-enforcement agencies, elected officials and consumer advocates formed in June 2013 to tackle the violent crime wave of smartphone thefts. The SOS Initiative called on the smartphone industry to adopt kill switch technology as a theft deterrent. The crime data released shows the effectiveness of the strategy of putting pressure on private industry to implement existing technology that removes incentives to steal a smartphone is working to reduce crime and protect wireless consumers. After SOS called on the industry to adopt a kill switch, Apple introduced Activation Lock in September 2013.  While initially an opt-in solution, there has been a steady downward trend in thefts targeting smartphones since the implementation of this technology. From January 2013 to December 2014, New York City’s Police Department recorded a 16 percent overall drop in cell phone robberies, including a 25 percent drop in iPhone robberies—the first phone to adopt a kill switch. During that same time period, San Francisco recorded a 27 percent overall drop in cell phone robberies, and a 40 percent decrease in iPhone robberies. London has recorded a similar decline in Read More …
