World Bank projects PH economy to expand 6.4%

The World Bank is projecting a 6.4 % expansion for the Philippine economy in 2016, mainly due to expected robust government spending and private consumption around the May national elections. Philippine elections [via Philstar] World Bank Philippines Senior Country Economist Karl Chua explained the faster growth projection saying it will be “aided by low inflation and spillovers from increased spending due to the upcoming general elections.” The Washington-based multilateral lender said the Philippines had one of the stronger growth prospects among the developing Southeast Asian economies. “Growth this year will be supported by stronger government spending related to the election which could stimulate private consumption and in turn increase GDP growth by 1 percentage point in first half of 2016,” the World Bank projected. Chua projected that investments would likely support growth in the Philippines as the implementation of the key public-private partnership projects accelerated. The World Bank also said it expected the country’s gross domestic product growth rate to ease to 6.2 percent in 2017 and 2018.   Related posts: Sustainable energy projects get World Bank, BPI financing PHL economy moving toward balanced, high growth World Bank, S&P raise PHL’s 2014 growth forecast Phl most insulated Asian economy to external risks

DOST Free Wi-Fi to boost online income earners

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) reports that by the end of 2015 an estimated 1.5 million Filipinos have earned dollars without leaving the country, having found work through the internet. The report says Filipinos working online are given jobs in writing, graphic and web design, desktop publishing, software development, audio and video editing, and as virtual assistants. The earning rates average $3per hour and $250 per project. Variations in income rates depend on the job’s level of difficulty. The worker’s online reputation is also considered, gleaned from ratings given by previous online employers. Online Jobs can be found through job portals such as UpWork.com, Freelancer.ph and OnlineJobs.ph. Employers are usually small to medium-sized companies or individuals abroad who choose to outsource certain jobs and functions in order to be cost effective. An online worker needs a computer with Internet access as well as the necessary skills to do the job. The key requirement of internet access need is where the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Office of DOST steps in to boost the number of online income earners, targeting Filipinos in the provinces to use this alternative means to earning income. “The Juan Konek Free Wi-Fi Internet access in public places project hopes to address this. With faster Internet connectivity available in all municipalities, this can significantly increase the number of Filipinos earning a living through the Internet,” DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo said in the DOST release. Juan Konek is part of the ICT Office’s Digital Empowerment Read More …

Is God Your First Option or Last Option?

Chinkee Tan “GOD, just heal me from this terrible disease, and I will serve you.” “GOD, I have done everything there is to do. You are my last resort. Please help me!” “GOD, please help! I promise that if you do this for me, I will change. I will be a better person.” Have you ever bargained with God? We may not want to admit it, but for most times we only remember God when we are at a “dead end”, when we have no choice. We tend to treat the Lord like a fire extinguisher. We call on Him only in times of emergency, when we are in dire need. When things are okay with us, we don’t even acknowledge His presence. Why is God often the LAST OPTION instead of being the FIRST OPTION? Why should we make Him our FIRST OPTION? HE IS AN ALL-KNOWING GOD There is nothing that God doesn’t know. He knows each and every situation that we are going through, our struggles, our thoughts. We cannot hide anything from Him. He knows you from head to toe. He said that even before we were formed in our mother’s womb, He already knows us. So if there is one person who truly knows how to help us, that is God. HE IS A POWERFUL GOD There is nothing that God cannot do. What is impossible for man is always possible with God. Imagine, the very creator of heaven and earth is the very one Read More …

Nonito Donaire is back as world boxing champion

Filipino champion boxer Nonito Donaire reclaimed his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantam weight title with a unanimous decision over Cesar Juarez of Mexico. Nonito Donaire [via Philstar] In a Puerto Rico match that is described by ESPN as a Fight of the Year contender, Donaire referred to his boxing match as, “the toughest fight I’ve ever been in my life. It was an amazing fight.” The Filipino Flash controlled the first 6 rounds of the fight and twice knocked down his opponent. However, a tough Juarez kept his aggressive stance and kept exchanging blows with the Filipino boxer. In post-fight interviews Donaire admitted to injuries which slowed him down during the latter part of the match. The Filipino boxer suffered an eye cut and swelling. He was also weakened in the final rounds by a bad spill that twisted his leg. “I couldn’t throw a punch from the leg, I was only throwing shoulder punches,” Donaire told media. He was able to maintain his lead by landing punches against a furious opponent. The ring action was applauded by the audience which gave both fighters a standing ovation at the end of the match. The 5-weight division title winner won back the belt after losing it in 2013 to Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux who afterwards lost the title due to inactivity, giving way to the Donaire-Juarez match for the vacant title. He said he wants a rematch with Rigondeaux. The win improved Donaire’s record to 36-3 with 23 knockouts.   Related Read More …

APEC CEOs see broadband connectivity as a growth pathway

The APEC CEOs identified broadband connectivity as a priority among the several growth-driven areas in a survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCooper (PWC) among the region’s top business leaders. APEC CEO Summit 2015 [by SeongJoon Cho via The Age] PwC Int’l. Ltd. Chairman Dennis Nally reported on the findings of their APEC CEO survey as “reflective of a region in transition” from intra-APEC trade outpacing global trade in 2016 to digital technology streamlining manufacturing and high-quality education increasing the ranks of the middle class. APEC CEOs expressed in the survey that growth prospects for the region will be enhanced with improved connectivity.  Of the CEOs surveyed, the highest – at 28% — went to broadband connectivity compared to new transport and maritime corridors, Trade Facilitation Agreements (TFA) and others. “Estimates on the impact on the GDP across Asia Pacific of the 700MHz band alone, as allocated to mobile, is a tenfold increase to US$1 trillion by 2020,” said Globe General Counsel Atty. Froilan Castelo as he cited GSMA’s forecast from the harmonization of the 700/800MHz bands.   Globe Telecom is a co-member along with other telco service providers, from all over the world, of GSMA or Groupe Speciale Mobile.  GSMA is an international trade body for telecommunications advocacy – representing network operators that use GSM technology for their networks. Castelo added that in their talks with GSMA, they were informed that the Philippines was one of only two countries in the world with major issues which lie in the way of adoption of the APT Read More …
