Jeepney-style Popemobile for Pope Francis visit

Pope Francis [via Papal Visit to the Philippines] The Pinoy jeepney has been converted into the first jeepney popemobile, the motor vehicle to be used by Pope Francis when the Vatican City leader visits the Philippines this January. The pope is known to forego luxury cars and is known to prefer and take public transport. The Filipino people’s offering to its state and apostolic visitor is in this line of preferences. The Manila road and cultural icon is itself a converted United States military transport turned into a public utility vehicle which can carry as much as 20 passengers. The newest popemobile converted its passenger side into a platform to allow the public a clear view of the Roman Catholic Church head as the papal ride moves along the designated papal public route. Although this version is painted white in stark contrast to its standard colours, the jeepney popemobile remains unmistakably a jeepney with its front long bumper and steel “bull bar”, the side stainless steel strips, and the rear checkered plates. The popemobile [via Twitter] The hood, roof and sides carry the papal coat of arms, the eight-pointed star emblem of the Society of Jesus symbolizing the Virgin Mary, and a spikenard symbol of St. Joseph. The jeepney popemobile’s sides are flanked by the papal insignia and a glass cross sculpted by artist Ramon Orlina. The passenger entrance remains at the rear, with the step that can be folded and unfurled with a red carpet. There are only three Read More …

Filipino visual artist upcycles garbage into wearable art

Trashion [via Facebook] A Filipino designer has taken on the challenge of solid waste management by upcycling trash into fashionable works of art. Visual artist Francis Sollano partners with hotels, malls and restaurants to source garbage materials to be used by him and his team in creating trashion art pieces that can be worn as accessories. Sollano also creates home accessories and installations. Sollano and his team are based in Cebu in central Philippines and shuttles between the islands and Singapore where he has set up a second home. He admits to taking trashion seriously only after he joined the Youth for a Livable Cebu (YLC), a group of young professionals advocating sustainable lifestyles to make his home island a more liveable place. The group has been his platform for introducing his creations and networking with commercial establishments, effectively ensuring proper solid waste management. To create his art pieces, Sollano experiments with various techniques such a weaving, shredding, and indirect heating to manipulate materials. The designer uses organic processes done by hand to convert ugly used and thrown out elements into works of art. His works are described by the fashion world as elegant in aesthetic and delicate in quality. Where there used to be the signature blue plastic bags of a huge department store chain, there now exists delicate-looking lacy material for his Chloe-inspired dress, a piece shredded by hand and ironed by Sollano himself. He has fashioned clear plastic bottles into a cluster of flowers for his Dani Read More …

PH shoppers among the world’s most socially conscious

Consumers in the Philippines are among the most socially conscious shoppers in the world, a recent Nielsen study revealed. The Nielsen Global Survey of Corporate Social Responsibility showed that the Philippines has the most number of consumers who are more willing to pay extra for products and services that come from socially responsible and environment friendly companies. The Philippines ranked highest at 79 percent, followed by Vietnam and Thailand at 73 percent and 71 percent, respectively. “We see the strongest propensity to buy socially and environmentally responsible brands from consumers in emerging markets such as the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand where consumers face extreme levels of poverty and frequent encounters with natural and environmental disasters,” said Stuart Jamieson, Nielsen’s managing director in the Philippines. Jamieson urged brands “to act fast to address this rising demand,” noting that consumers in the Philippines and other emerging markets are looking for brands which are committed to supporting local communities and improving the state of the environment. The study also revealed that in the past six months, 76 percent of Filipinos bought at least one product or service because it was manufactured by a company committed to positive social and environmental impact. Vietnamese consumers again ranked second highest in the Asia Pacific (third highest globally) with 68 percent; Thais with 66 percent; and Indonesians with 61 percent. The Philippines also ranked highest globally in having consumers who check product packaging to ensure the brand is committed to positive social and environmental impact before deciding Read More …

American 6th graders raise funds for Typhoon Yolanda victims

Kirsten Solloway, left, and Ryleigh Justice, sixth-graders at Elkridge Landing Middle School, pose with money they raised to help typhoon and tornado victims. [via Elkridge Landing Middle School] When Kirsten Solloway learned how Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines in November, she knew she had to do something. After all, her stepfather is Filipino, and with members of his family living in the Philippines, she felt a personal connection to the tragedy. Kirsten, 12, started discussing ideas to help with her friend and sixth grade classmate at Elkridge Landing Middle School, Ryleigh Justice, 11. At the same time, she learned about tornadoes wreaking havoc in Illinois in November, and she said the two of them felt compelled to help victims of both weather events. “We decided we didn’t want to help just one group when the damage was going on in both places,” Ryleigh said. Their idea was a change-collection drive they held from Dec. 3 to 20. They decorated 30 Ball Mason jars, one for the front office and the others for each classroom and asked classmates and teachers to donate their spare change. The amount raised – $1,017 – surprised even the girls. They donated the money to the American Red Cross. “We didn’t think we were going to raise that much. We thought, $600 at the most. We never thought we’d hit a thousand,” Ryleigh said. “It was crazy,” Kirsten said. And, it got crazier. Classrooms started competing against each other, although it wasn’t part of the girls’ Read More …
