The 90-day campaign period for the May 2016 election officially started Tuesday, with candidates organizing their respective campaign sorties around the country.(MNS photo) TIAONG, Quezon  (Mabuhay) – Instead of joining the 30th anniversary of People Power Revolution on EDSA, Vice President Jejomar Binay, his running mate Sen. Gringo Honasan, and their senatorial slate decided to woo  vote-rich Quezon province. In his speech during the campaign sortie here, Honasan said they thought it would be better to be with the people than attend the EDSA program where most of the attendees did not even join the historic People Power happened in 1986. “Imbes na makipagsiksikan sa karamihan na wala naman doon noong People Power Revolution ay pinili namin na makapiling kayo,” he said. Binay, for his part, said he and Honasan are in the same camp not only today but especially during the EDSA revolution. “Hindi lang kami ngayon nagsama ni Sen. Honasan. Ang maipagmamalaki po namin, sa lahat ng kandidatong presidente at vice president ngayon [ay] kami ay tahasang alam niyo naman na magkasama sa EDSA,” he said. “Ang ipinaglaban namin ay dapat tapusin na ang kahirapan dahil sumasama ang pamumuno noong panahong iyon,” Binay added. Quezon Governor David Suarez said the province is 110 percent behind the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) slate. “Doon tayo sa pinahahalagahan tayo. Hindi ‘yung darating dito na hindi man lang ako inimbitahan. Quezon is 110 percent behind Read More …

But their relationship hit a snag when she decided to get pregnant. “Akala niya mahal ko iyong tatay ni Grace,” said Roces, who was referring to her eldest daughter. “Which is not kasi ginamit ko lang talaga siya para magkaroon ng baby na palalakihin namin.” “So naghiwalay kami. Pero after noon, wala na akong naging seryosong relasyon. Parang may kulang eh. Alam kong hindi ito,” she added. After 27 years, Roces again met her partner. “Kapag pala tinatama mo ang buhay mo, lahat pala ng mga bisyo mo na hindi mo gusto nandiyan, kusang mawawala with the help of the Lord. Plastic campaign tarpaulins are a health risk: EcoWaste Coalition

Commission on Elections Chairman Andy Bautista (left) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Atty. Emerson Carlos (right) inspect confiscated campaign materials in Santolan, Quezon City on Friday. The Comelec encouraged citizens to submit photos of candidates who use unlawful campaign materials.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – EcoWaste Coalition on Monday warned against the public health risks of plastic tarpaulins used by politicians in the campaign for the May elections. It said the plastic tarpaulins contain carcinogenic cadmium. “Plastic tarpaulins have become extremely popular for all types of advertising and promotion. The use of tarps by politicians running for the May polls is a case in point,” Aileen Lucero, EcoWaste Coalition coordinator said. She continued, “The problem goes beyond the huge volume of tarps hanging on unauthorized places like bridges, cables, lamp posts and trees that have to be laboriously removed by MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) or DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) workers.” Aside from being a carcinogenic, cadmium also accumulates in the kidneys, which can lead to the formation of kidney stones. It also affects calcium metabolism, softening the bones and causing osteoporosis. Lucero said their group screened 300 pieces of campaign tarpaulins from the MMDA’s “Operation Baklas” tested positive for the chemical. “All of the 300 tarps were found to contain cadmium in the range of  697 to 1,921 parts per million (ppm), way above the European Union’s 100 ppm limit for cadmium in plastics,” according to EcoWaste. The MMDA had said that it collects an average Read More …

PhilPost head faces raps for failure to remit loan payments of employee

Manila Central Post Office, headquarter of the Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) Photo courtesy of Scandi https://commons.wikimedia.org MANILA  (Mabuhay) – The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the filing of charges against Philippine Postal Corporation (PPC) postmaster general Josephine dela Cruz for the agency’s alleged failure to remit to the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) the loan amortizations of an employee. In a resolution recently signed by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, the anti-graft body found probable cause to charge Dela Cruz with 15 counts of violation of Republic Act 8291 or the GSIS Act of 1997. Also ordered charged with the same violation were PPC Eastern Mindanao area director Bernardito Gonzales and Arlene Bendanillo of PPC- Zamboanga City. Based on the Ombudsman’s investigation, the PPC failed to remit the loan amortizations of one of its employees in Zamboanga City, Santos Pamatong Jr., to the GSIS for the period of October 2011 to December 2012. In her defense, Dela Cruz claimed that due to insufficiency of funds, “the PPC prioritized the net take home pay of employees and operating costs, over the remittance to the GSIS of premiums and loan amortizations.” In her resolution, however, Morales dismissed Dela Cruz’ claim for lack of proof. “Dela Cruz has not presented any evidence that would support her allegation that the PPC lacked the funds to be able to remit to the GSIS complainant’s loan amortizations,” the resolution read. Under Section 52 of the GSIS Act, the heads and personnel of a national government office involved Read More …

Mark Lapid defends TIEZA funding of P4.1-M school projects

Mark Lapid, along with his wife Tanya and father Senator Lito Lapid, files his certificate of candidacy for senator at the Comelec office in Manila on Wednesday, October 14. (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – Former Pampanga governor Mark Lapid on Monday defended the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority’s (TIEZA) decision to spend P4.1 million for the construction of two public school facilities which the Commission on Audit (COA) said were outside its mandate. Lapid, who served as TIEZA chief operating officer until he filed his certificate of candidacy for senator in October 2015, said the construction of a Tourism Information Center in Rizal High School in Pasig City and a Performing Arts Facilities at the San Agustin Elementary School in Parañaque City had the TIEZA board’s approval and passed the criteria for funding such projects. While admitting that his agency had received funding requests for infrastructure projects from local government units (LGUs), Lapid said TIEZA also conducted due diligence to ensure the approved initiatives were well within its mandate. “Noong ginawa namin ‘yan, siyempre, we turn[ed] it over to the LGU. Sa kanila na yung paglalaman doon. Sa kanila na ‘yung manpower kasi wala na kaming capability doon. So ‘yung amin ay pagbibigay ng mga imprastruktura na ito na ni-request nila. I think they will not request for it if they don’t think they need it at kailangan sa isang lugar,” Lapid said. He said all requests for funding infrastructure projects pass through the TIEZA board and have to Read More …

Comelec’s vote-counting machines, hackable, ‘expert’ claims

Commission on Elections spokesman James Jimenez demonstrates how the vote-counting machine (VCM) works, during a congressional hearing on poll automation, Tuesday. Senator Koko Pimentel urged the Comelec to provided printed receipts to allow voters to check if their votes were properly scanned.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – A man claiming to be an automated elections expert said the vote-counting machines (VCM) that will be used by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the May elections are vulnerable to hacking and manipulation. Dr. Jin Battung, who claims having ties with the Israeli founders of instant messaging app Viber, said the claims that the VCM’s source code was “unhackable” meant nothing as it was the machine’s algorithms that the Comelec should be concerned with. “This one, it is hackable… Don’t talk about source code. Ano ba ang source code? Panloloko lang ‘yan. Source code? There’s nothing there. What you have to do- algorithim… ,” Battung said in a media forum on Saturday. Battung said that suspicions about the VCM’s capabilities would’ve been eradicated if the Comelec let each party observe the VCM’s algorithm with their own bevy of experts. “Kung yung algorithm, yun yung ipakita nila, yung PDP-Laban, from Liberal, from Nacionalista, kunghi-hire ng kanya-kanyang IT expert- papasok kaming IT expert and then we run off the algorithm, dun namin makikita kung yan nga ang lumalabas,” he said. “Kasi yung algorithm nun, iba dun sa sinasabi ng PCOS (precinct-count optical scanners). I’m very sure of that,” Battung continued. However, time has run out Read More …
