Mark Herras (MNS photo) It’s been 12 years since Mark Herras won GMA-7’s talent reality contest “StarStruck” and started fulfilling his dream of being an actor. All these times, Mark has gone through a lot of ups and downs in his career. He played a variety of lead roles, too, as well as minor roles. And while there were phases when he did not have regular shows, it did not stop him from pressing on. These days, things are looking up. Mark welcomes 2016 with multiple projects, particularly “Little Nanay” with Nora Aunor, Kris Bernal, and Eddie Garcia. “Ang ganda ng pasok ng taon, not just because sunod-sunod ang trabaho, well, isa iyon sa dahilan. November pa nag-start. It’s been a year and a half na wala akong regular show na ginagawa. I’ve been doing a lot of guestings sa GMA, pero syempre masarap pa rin ’yung feeling na kasama ka sa isang show,” Mark said in an interview in Cebu right before his performance at the Ayala Terraces in time for Sinulog Festival 2016. Aside from “Little Nanay,” Mark stars on “Dangwa” and “Wish I May.” “It’s been a long time, actually, na naging ganito ako ka-busy. Ang huli kong project was ‘Rhodora X.’ After noon, lagi akong nasa mga pilot episodes tapos mamamatay ako (’yung character ko). “Then, pumasok ako sa ‘Batang Yagit.’ Then ’yung kay Christian Bautista. Sa ‘Pari ’Koy’ hindi naman ako namatay, pero nakulong ako doon. So ang daming guestings…” The year is looking good Read More …
Kris Bernal (MNS Photo) Kapuso actress Kris Bernal has done a variety of TV dramas in the past, but it’s her role on “Little Nanay” that has caught the attention of viewers. Kris plays Tinay, a young mother with the mental capacity of a nine-year-old. “Super happy kasi very important sa akin ’yung I get good feedback sa project na ginagawa ko. Sa lahat ng shows na nagawa ko, itong ‘Little Nanay’ ’yung naging pinakamaingay sa akin,” Kris said. Being a part of the series has taught Kris to appreciate individuals with intellectual disabilities. “Mas naiintindihan ko sila ngayon. Before kasi ang knowledge ko lang about them is may special sa kanila, na may hindi normal sa kanila. Pero patagal ng patagal, mas nakikilala ko sila, ’yung pagiging affectionate nila, hindi sila nagtatanim ng sama ng loob. Very loving sila. So parang in return ’yung mga taong nakapaligid sa kanila, dapat equal ’yung pakikitungo sa kanila kasi wala silang sama ng loob, negative vibes. Happy lang talaga sila,” she said. She has now become more active in helping kids that need special care. Kris hold parties and also provides them some supplies. “Meron din akong sinusuportahang SPED school even before this, pero mas active ako now. Gusto ko maghanap pa Read More …
Many questions remain about when to screen and how to treat depression.©Andrew Lever/shutterstock.com (Miami, United States-AFP) – An influential US panel on Tuesday called for all adults to be screened for depression, including women during and after pregnancy, marking the first time it has urged a focus on maternal mental health. The non-binding call was issued by the US Preventive Services Task Force, an independent, volunteer panel of experts that makes recommendations about the effectiveness of various health and counseling services. “The USPSTF found convincing evidence that screening improves the accurate identification of adult patients with depression in primary care settings, including pregnant and postpartum women,” said the statement in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It also found evidence that combining screening with “adequate support systems” may improve clinical outcomes by reducing or eliminating depression. The guidelines update those issued in 2009 which did not specifically mention depression in women of childbearing age, but called for adult screening for depression when and where support systems allowed. “Depression is among the leading causes of disability in persons 15 years and older,” said the latest report. It is “also common in postpartum and pregnant women.” The USPSTF “found convincing evidence” that treating adults with depression with antidepressants, psychotherapy, or both could improve patient outcomes. It also pointed to “some harms” associated with antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) because they may increase suicide risk and are associated with “potential serious fetal harms.” Since many questions remain about when Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA, Jan 26 (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe and Senate President Franklin Drilon are taking opposite sides on the issue of listening to an audio recording of an alleged attempt to cover up the events of the Mamasapano encounter. Poe said she is open to playing the audio clip when the Senate reopens its investigation on the bloody clash that saw 44 police commandos killed in an anti-terror operation. “Welcome sa atin iyan e kapag may magtutunton ng kung ano mang nais nating malaman na katotohanan,” said Poe, chairperson of the Senate committee on public order. On the other hand, Drilon said any evidence obtained through wiretapping is inadmissible in court hearings and legislative inquiries. “We are the lawmakers, we should not be the lawbreakers. Iyan po ay nasa Anti-Wiretapping Act, maliwanag po na hindi pwedeng tanggaping ebidensya ang unauthorized recording lalo na sa legislative investigation,” he said in a separate DZMM interview. A retired police officer and senatorial aspirant, Diosdado Valeroso, earlier said he has a digital audio recording of a conversation between a high-ranking government official and a legislator that occurred a day or two after the clash that left 44 Special Action Force (SAF) troopers dead. Sen. Antonio Trillanes with members of Magdalo party, shows his certificate of candidacy (CoC) for vice president, at the Palacio del Gobernador in Manila, Tuesday. Trillanes will be running as an independent candidate, but expressed support for Sen. Grace Poe’s presidential bid in the 2016 elections. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A possible impeachment move could be immediately initiated against Vice President Jejomar Binay if he becomes president, Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV said as the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee concluded on Tuesday its probe on corruption allegations against Binay. Aside from plunder and graft charges, Trillanes said the subcommittee can still recommend more criminal charges, such as tax evasion, against Binay in connection with alleged anomalies he committed when he was still the mayor of Makati City. The subcommittee, headed by Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, had already come up with a partial report, including a recommendation to file plunder and graft charges against Binay over the alleged overpriced Makati City Hall 2 parking building. “Every single act constitutes either a graft charge or a plunder charge or other violations of the Revised Penal Code,” Trillanes, who initiated the Senate probe against Binay, said at a press conference after the hearing. Reminded that Binay would be immune from suit if he gets elected president in the upcoming elections, Trillanes said: “Ganun na nga (That’s how it is) but immediately it can be used as a basis for impeachment.” “So kaya nga kung ma e-elect man si Vice President Binay Read More …
Vice President Jejomar Binay walks among his supporters at the Makati City hall on Monday. People gathered at the city hall grounds to show their support for the older Binay and his son, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, who was earlier served another suspension by the Ombudsman. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Vice President Jejomar Binay isn’t keen on reviving the death penalty to resolve the crime problem in the country. In a radio interview, Binay said bringing back the capital punishment is not the way to ensure crimes will no longer be committed. “Hindi kalutasan ‘yun eh. ‘Wag nating ilagay ang ating kaisipan na kapag may death sentence ay mawawala na ang mga krimen o mababawasan. Sa buong mundo hindi ‘yan (pagbaba ng krimen) naipakita ng data. Marami pang ibang paraan para malutas [ang krimen] na hindi tayo napupunta sa death sentence,” he said. Binay, a human rights lawyer, said he used to be in favor of restoring the death penalty due to the anger he felt over cases of murder and rape. However, he said he eventually came to believe in the Catholic Church’s position that life is sacred. In 2011, the vice president said he favored the revival of the death penalty in the following the discovery of the charred remains of Emerson Lozano, son of lawyer Oliver Lozano, and two other victims in Central Luzon. A car theft syndicate operation was believed to be responsible for the killing of Lozano and the two other victims. Binay said Read More …
Members of the Senate Blue Ribbon Sub-Committee investigating the alleged overpricing of a 12-story building for the University of Makati’s nursing school watch a presentation on Monday. The building’s construction cost of P1.140 billion is alleged to be overpriced to benefit then mayor Jejomar Binay back in 2007. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Sandiganbayan has allowed former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado to testify against Elenita Binay, wife of Vice President Jejomar Binay, in connection with her pending graft case. In a resolution dated January 22, the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division reversed its July 2015 ruling denying the prosecution’s motion to present Mercado as witness. “A re-examination of the Motion stirs this Court to reconsider. It is axiomatic that the matter of presentation of witnesses by the prosecution is not for the accused, or except in limited sense, for the court to dictate. The prosecution has the discretion as to how to present its case and it has the right to choose whom it wishes to present as witnesses,” the 16-page ruling penned by Associate Justice Ma. Theresa Dolores Gomez-Estoesta read. The resolution was concurred in by Fifth Division chairman Associate Justice Roland Jurado and acting member Associate Justice Samuel Martires. In its new ruling, the court gave weight on the prosecution’s pronouncement in its motion for reconsideration filed in August last year, which said that Mercado can give a competent testimony on how an original copy of a Commission on Audit (COA) ended up in his possession.
