Liza Diño (MNS photo) Liza Diño is back to doing what she loves best – acting. She is taking part in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), playing an important role in “Toto,” an entry in the New Wave category. Directed by J.P. Su, “Toto” tells the story of Antonio ‘Toto’ Estares, played by Sid Lucero, a Pinoy desperate to get to America in the hopes of giving his family a better life. Liza plays the role of Eve Porter, a liberated Fil-Am who promised to help Toto achieve his goal. “It is a layered character. She’s a modern woman, but she needs this guy (Toto) na kailangan (din) ng tulong niya and she feels for this person,” she said. The actress initially auditioned for the role of Tessa, Toto’s girlfriend, but the film director deemed her more ideal as Eve given her strong personality. Liza admitted she had second thoughts playing Eve as the role requires her to bare skin in some scenes. “Hindi ko alam kung kaya ko ba talaga kasi hindi lang siya ’yung nudity na silhouette eh,” she said. “I work with a director that I really trust, and I worked with a lead actor na gentleman. Ang sarap mag-work sa ganu’ng environment na pinoprotektahan ka ng mga tao sa paligid mo,” she related. Deeming the role a breakthrough for her as an actress, she noted, “I think nandu’n na ’ko sa stage ng career ko as an actor na I should not be limited Read More …
Michael V (MNS Photo) In the last two decades, comedy gag show “Bubble Gang” has featured several notable personalities with many more wanting to make a guest appearance. Michael V, the only holdover from the original cast, is not surprised about it. “Kasi may reputasyon na ang ‘Bubble Gang’ bilang pinakamatagal and the best so far, for me ha. Hindi sa pag-a-angat ng bangko pero kasi marami nang pinagdaanan ang show,” he explained. The comedy actor admitted new blood is most welcome in the show because it keeps things interesting. “Open kami na magkaroon ng bagong gangsters kasi evolving ang show eh. Hindi pwedeng manatili na ganu’n lang. Dapat kung ano ang bago eh, dapat magawa namin,” he said. Michael V may be the creative director but he is not taking sole credit for the show’s success. “Team effort ‘yan (and) it has always been like that.” Asked how they come up with sketches, Michael V says they observe what’s going on around them, the idea being that they simply want to hold up a mirror to the comical side of life. He said, “Sa 20 years na takbo ng show, anything na nangyayari sa society natin eh, na-i-re-reflect namin sa ‘Bubble Gang’ through gags, skits, spoofs.” He admitted the show has had its low moments. “Pero nag-survive kami kasi hindi lang basta show ‘to, pamilya na ‘to eh. In a way din eh, nirerendehan kami ng network kaya mas nagiging maingat kami. Kaya nagtatagal kami,” he said. Certainly, Michael Read More …

There seems to be no end to the perennial flooding problems that has plagued Metro Manila for years. A week ago, it was reported that large areas of Metro Manila was flooded because of typhoon “Nona” and tropical depression “Onyok,” making it virtually difficult for residents to commute. As usual, thousands of motorists and commuters were reportedly stranded in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Hundreds of commuters who were unavailable to find public transport, were forced to wade through waist-deep floods just to get home. Vast swathes of farmlands inundated by Typhoon Lando in October were flooded again this week due to heavy rains brought by Typhoon Nona.(MNS photo) Metro Manila has a total population of about 12 million and its total land area is equivalent to or even larger than most provinces in the Philippines. Until such time that the government demolish all shanties built by illegal settlers along esteros, sidewalks and those under bridges, Metro Manila will continue to deteriorate. Since there is no alternative for low income housing, people are forced to live or squat in make-shift shanties along esteros, sidewalks or even under bridges. Congressmen and Mayors in Metro Manila have ignored the presence of these “squatters” since they represent votes during elections. Hopefully, elected officials in Metropolitan Manila will have the political will, one of these days, to finally evict these illegal squatters if only to help Read More …

Also in photo is National Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin.(MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP | Monday 12/21/2015 – Philippine President Benigno Aquino promised Monday that 83.9 billion pesos ($1.77 billion) allocated for military modernization projects would be spent by 2017 as the country faces a territorial dispute with China. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the armed forces, Aquino said his administration had already spent 56.79 billion pesos of the total scheduled for full disbursement by 2017 on “big-ticket” modernization programs. This was more than the sum spent by the three previous administrations, said Aquino, who took office in 2010 and leaves office next year, as he bemoaned the lack of proper equipment that had long hampered the military. “Back then, because of lack of equipment, there was a soldier in a sensitive operation carrying a purple backpack from a fast food chain. I just don’t think a purple backpack is suited for an operation in the jungle,” he told assembled soldiers. The president cited the new equipment purchased in recent years including FA-50 jets, the country’s first supersonic fighter aircraft for a decade. The Christmas season is the most favorite time of the year to millions of Christians around the world where traditions have evolved and refuse to yield to the trappings of the modern era. Filipinos in the U.S. could not have but feel emotional and nostalgic thinking of how different Christmas is celebrated in their home county. The signs begin to manifest when the months end in “ber” and the frenetic preparations commence. The Philippines is said to be a country that celebrates Christmas the longest. While Christmas in the Philippines conjures up memories of time honored traditions introduced to its shores by foreign influences, the practices and symbolisms still persist and have been embellished by touches of modernity, In their adopted county the Christmas scenery is almost similar – a warm house fully decorated, Christmas tree, light and families, and friends coming together to enjoy sumptuous meals- except for snow. Paying Homage: Pilgrims from the U.S. marvel at the slab in Golgotha, Jerusalem where claimed as the place where Jesus was given customary burial treatment. Christians worldwide will celebrate His birth on December 25 amid the tumultuous state of the world that He offered Himself to save. The Philippines’ Christmas traditions are representations of the deep and religiosity and fervor brought about by foreign influences. The observance of the tradition of the nine-day devotion called “Simbang Gabi” has endured for more than 400 years.
