OFW groups seek dialogue with BOC on balikbayan box inspections

An operative of a joint inter-agency government task force holds counterfeit music players raided from a warehouse in Binondo, Manila on Wednesday. The raid netted fake cellphones, electronic gadgets, and accessories worth an estimated P70 Million. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Pro-overseas Filipino workers (OFW) groups on Monday urged Bureau of Customs (BOC) officials to hold a dialogue with the OFW sector in connection with its plan to randomly inspect balikbayan boxes supposedly as a way to curb technical smuggling. Despite government assurances on safeguards, OFW groups fear the planned random inspection, set to be implemented starting October in time for the Christmas season, will be abused by “unscrupulous individuals.” “Every balikbayan box is sacred to the OFW and his or her family. Pinaghirapang pag-ipunan at bilhin ang bawat nakalagay sa kahon na ‘yan – mula sapatos hanggang lotion, mula tuwalya hanggang de lata. At kung may mawala, sino ang managot sa nagpadala?” said the Blas F. Ople Policy Center, a pro-migrant group, in a statement. Susan Ople, who heads the center, said the coalition intends to formally write to Commissioner Albert Lina to seek a dialogue in order to clarify the bureau’s new policy on balikbayan boxes. “This has become a very emotional issue for our OFWs,” she noted. “We would like to know firsthand from the BOC leadership what brought this controversy on.” Among the issues to be raised by the OFW coalition before the BOC is the “dictatorial and arbitrary manner” by which the bureau has chosen Read More …

Vilma Santos may run for Congress

Vilma Santos (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — BATANGAS Governor Vilma Santos said she is not interested in running for vice president in 2016 elections but she is contemplating a run for Congress. Santos said she is not ready for a national position. “Wala akong plano, wala akong ambisyon. Hindi kasi madali na trabaho yun. Yung governor, sakripisyo na, how much more kung pag-uusapan natin (yung bise) na hindi biro. Alam ko yung kakayanan ko. Hindi ako prepared for that,” she said. She said she is seriously contemplating to run as representative of Batangas. “I may run for Congress, kasi hindi naman siya ganun kahigpit like 24/7, 8 days a week. Eight days a week, as in literal, hindi ko kaya ‘yon. Ito, legislative, pero not as heavy kasi batas din ito. That’s part of my learning too, pero hindi ganoon kalaki ang burden,” she said. Santos, who spent nine years as a mayor of Lipa and another nine years as governor of Batangas, said it was not an easy job but a fulfilling one. She said that it entails a lot of sacrifice, especially from her family life, but she made a promise to the people, which is to serve them, and does not regret a thing. “Hindi madali. Marami akong sakripisyo at sa totoo lang, kung iisipin mo yung public service, sacrifice yan. Hindi totoo na masarap yan. Hindi kung gusto mo na maging epektibo,” she said. “Wala akong regrets kahit marami akong natapon na pagkakataon, income number one. Read More …

Wally stages biggest comeback

Wally Bayola (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — WALLY Bayola says he was so surprised when his Lola Nidora character became a big hit in the Problem Solving segment of “Eat Bulaga”. Wally has staged one of the most successful comebacks of a celebrity who got involved in a sex scandal. He admits he got so depressed when his controversial sex video came out and he thought his career was over. “Kaya malaking pasasalamat ko sa ‘Eat Bulaga’ for giving me another chance,” he says. “Unang-una kay Jose kasi siya talaga ang nag-push na makabalik ako. At heto nga, bukod sa ‘Eat Bulaga’, napasama pa ako sa bagong show na ‘Sunday PinaSaya’, kaya Monday to Sunday na kami mapapanood nina Jose at Alden sa TV every lunch time.” “Sunday PinaSaya” has started airing last Aug. 9. Its youthful director, Rich Ilustre, says that it will be 80 percent comedy based. “May musical production numbers at games ito, but mostly comedy sketches with the cast members playing multiple roles,” he says. “For instance, si Ai Ai de Read More …

Teens are shopping more like their parents

In this July 27, 2015, photo, Sofia Harrison, 15, right, and some of her friends browse clothing at a shopping mall in Garden City, N.Y. Teens aren’t roaming around at the mall for kicks during back-to-school. They’re researching the looks they want online and follow popular hashtags on social media so they can piece together looks before they get there. AP/Seth Wenig GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — Giulia Pugliese is a typical teenager. She likes to look good, and she’s particular about what she wears. But when The Associated Press followed the 15-year-old from Long Island on a recent back-to-school shopping trip with friends, she left a Nike store empty-handed — even though Nike is one of her favorites. The reason? “I buy on sale because it’s stupid to buy a pair of shorts for $60,” said Pugliese, who instead looks for the “Swoosh” logo in discount stores like Marshalls. Teens are shopping like their parents during the back-to-school season, and that’s putting a lot of pressure on retailers to change the way they market to them. Gone are the spending sprees, starting weeks before school bells ring. More teens are thrifty nowadays, a habit picked up from their recession-scarred parents. Today’s kids recycle more clothes from the previous school year, mixing and matching the old with the new for different looks. They also shop year-round for things they need so they’re spending less money this time of year. When they do buy, they’re less likely to get anything that’s not Read More …

PHL land grab issue up at Cal Poly Pomona congressional open hearing

Just how serious is the issue of land grabbing in the Philippines to merit the attention of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of California Legislature under the chairmanship of Congressman Ed Royce of the 39th Legislative District. Serious enough for the close to 50-member Foreign Affairs Committee and the first hand experience of its Chair who visited the Philippines recently to look into the matter personally as part of  the fact-finding effort. With a colleague from the United States Agency for International Development, he visited the place in question at Antipolo City, Philippines and did not like the experience that lent credence to the allegations. Committee Hearing: Congressman Ed Royce’s Foreign Affairs Committee, (second from left) shown here with Buena Park Mayor Art Brown, Civic Leader Atty. Linda Sarno and Representative Young King of the 65th Legislative District at a recent function, will look into the problem of land-grabbing in the Philippines at a public hearing at Cal Pomona University. Royce represents California Legislative District 39. The veteran congressman sounded his concern on the apparent injustice to land grab victims as gathered from an interview at Cal State Fullerton where he delivered a short remarks at a Grant Seminar that his office sponsored recently as part of a community outreach. What he experienced during his exploratory trip in the Philippines gave him reasons to dig deeper into the matter and seek measures in order to correct the perceived injustice. The veteran lawmaker has also gone to other parts of Asia Read More …

Pinoys in US are outstanding immigrants (Part 2)

MPI Report: In 1970, there were more Pinoys serving the US Navy than the PHL Navy By Abner Galino A young couple enjoy teaching their daughter the proper way of moving back and forth on a swing at the Children’s Garden in Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City on Friday (Aug. 14, 2015). (MNS photo) The facts bear out to the strength of Pinoy immigrant community in the US, both in terms of numbers and quality. Now, let us go back in time to see how it came to be. Those who didn’t sleep off their history classes for most part of their high school should know that the American occupation of the Philippines started after the Spanish-American War in 1898. Through the Treaty of Paris, the Spanish empire ceded Cuba, Puerto Rico, parts of the Spanish West Indies, Guam and the Philippines to the US. Subsequently, the US Congress passed the Philippine Organic Act which organized the Insular Government and provided its basic laws. In 1935, this government was succeeded by the Commonwealth of the Philippines through the Tydings-Mcduffie Act, which prescribed a 10-year transition period for the eventual independence of the country. The outbreak of World War II delayed the process of independence up to July 4, 1946. As colonial subjects, Filipinos had the status of US nationals and had little restrictions in migrating to the US. The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) traced the beginning of the modern migration of Filipinos to the US with the entry of 100 Read More …

PHL to ensure Mt. Hamiguitan won’t be delisted as World Heritage Site after ‘Pamana’ death – Palace

President Benigno S. Aquino III graces the 45th anniversary celebration of the Presidential Management Staff held at the Reception Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on Thursday (August 20) with the theme: “Sustaining the Tradition of Excellence in Public Service.” (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday assured the public that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is doing what is needed to resolve the issue of the death of Philippine eagle “Pamana.” This is amid a supposed threat against Mt. Hamiguitan’s status as United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) World Heritage Site. The three-year old female Philippine eagle was found dead in the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a Unesco heritage site and protected area. “I think DENR already released a reward to get to the bottom, really, of what happened to ‘Pamana,’” Deputy President Spokesperson Abigail Valte said over state-run Radyo ng Bayan. “I’m sure that everyone wants to make certain that we are not delisted and that we do not lose that designation,” she added. Environmental group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan PNE) earlier criticized the government for not prioritizing conservation efforts. It said that unchecked poaching in the area was because of lack of funding and manpower. Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary was included in the World Heritage list in 2014 and was then recognized as an area that “provides critical habitat for a range of plant and animal species.” “The property showcases Read More …
