The Pope will meet with leaders of various religions and youth representatives. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Pope Francis has been honing his English speaking skills for his upcoming visit to the Philippines on January 15 to 19, the Vatican said on Wednesday. Translating Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi’s speech at a press conference on Wednesday, Pontificio Collegio Filippino rector Fr. Gregory Ramon Gaston in an interview on state-run Radio Television Malacañang (RTVM), said the Italian and Spanish-speaking Pope will deliver all his speeches and homilies in English. “Pinaghahandaan niya talaga… Hindi lang inihahanda ang texts na gagamitin, kung hindi, pina-practice kung paano ito sasabihin, ang mga text na ito,” Gaston said. He added that should the Argentine Pope encounter any difficulties with the language, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will translate for him. Gaston also pointed out that since some Filipinos know how to speak in Spanish, the Pope may use that to communicate. “Marami rin marunong mag-Spanish sa Philippines, so baka mag-konting Espanyol siya,” he noted. He also said the Pope is now more confident with his English-speaking skills after he successfully spoke the language in some of his speeches during his visit to South Korea last year. In a press conference, Defense Undersecretary Fernando Manalo, chairman of the Department of Defense’s bids and awards committee, said that the figure should be the least amount that the government should pour in its armed forces to reach the “credible deterrence” expected of an equipped armed forces. He explained that the basis of his estimate is the 1995 AFP Modernization Program under Republic Act (RA) 7898, which said that the military should have been allocated with P331 billion for its modernization program. However, only P33 billion was given to AFP. “To implement the first, second, and third horizon of the modernization program… dapat doble noong pondo na ibinigay noong 1995 dahil sa inflation after 15 years, so it should cost at least P600 billion,” he said. LA County to host used oil and filter recycling event in Maywood

http://dpw.lacounty.gov/epd LA County Public Works will host a free used motor oil and oil filter recycling event on January 10, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, at the Maywood O’Reilly Auto Parts, located at 4401 Slauson Ave. When used oil is illegally dumped into storm drains, it pollutes local water bodies and contaminates sources of clean drinking water. In fact, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it only takes one gallon of motor oil to contaminate as much as a million gallons of fresh water. That is equivalent to a year’s supply of drinking water for 50 people. In exchange for properly disposing of their used oil during the event, participants will be rewarded with free used oil containers, oil filters, shop towels, and funnels. Those recycling oil filters will receive one new oil filter. Promotional items are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Items for drop-off should be prepared by placing oil filters in sealed plastic bags and storing used motor oil in leak-proof containers. Used oil should not be mixed with any other liquid, including water. Used motor oil and oil filters can also be recycled for free at a local certified collection center or on weekends at a County-sponsored Household Hazardous Waste/Electronic Waste collection event. A full calendar of collection events and list of collection centers can be found at www.CleanLA.com. For additional information on the County’s oil and oil filter recycling program, call Edna Gandarilla, Program Manager, at (626) 458-6536.

Parrot’s new in-car system aims to include all smartphone owners

Screen capture of the Parrot RNB 6 in-car infotainment unit. ©Parrot (Relaxnews) – The RNB 6 is an aftermarket in-car infotainment system that runs the latest version of Android but that also supports CarPlay, Apple’s system for connecting an iPhone and its apps in the car dashboard. The unit packs a 7-inch 720p HD touchscreen display and offers a host of features even when not connected to a smartphone including an integrated navigation system and voice control for making calls and changing music tracks. It can also connect to a car’s diagnostics port to provide diagnostics information and can link to a car’s dashboard cam, too. When both Apple and Google announced that they were developing systems for safely connecting smartphones to the car dashboard there were fears that the car market could become as segregated as the old PC and current smartphone market – i.e., that some car brands would only support Apple and others only Android. However, the Parrot system, which runs a tweaked version of Android Lollipop, the latest version of Google’s smartphone and tablet operating system, has native support for Android Auto and for CarPlay. So if a compatible iPhone is connected to the RNB 6, users will be able to ask Siri questions, use Apple Maps or navigation and access their music libraries on the go. Other thoughtful features include being able to program music playback so that it optimizes speakers based on how many people are in the car and where they are sitting. Read More …

Marian: Kapag hindi magaling mag-English, bobo na?

Marian Rivera (MNS photo) Marian Rivera lamented the apparent mindset among Filipinos that those who speak English fluently are more intelligent, saying she is not one to claim proficiency in the language. Rivera talked about the topic during a visit to her alma mater, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, where she finished B.S. Pyschology, leading up to her December 30 wedding to actor Dingdong Dantes. During the presidential campaign in 2010, Rivera and Dantes were among the celebrity supporters of President Benigno Aquino III. The actress became the target of criticism and ridicule at the time when, in a televised interview, she defended the then-senator over allegations about his mental health. Referring to her degree, Rivera said, “Isa po akong psychology at nakikita ko na wala naman siyang (Aquino) diperensya.” The grammatically incorrect Read More …

Group appeals to Nazarene devotees for waste-free feast

Devotees raise their hands while praying at the Basilica for the Ist Friday mass a week ahead of the Feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9,2015 on Quezon Boulevard, Manila. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Keep this year’s Feast of the Black Nazarene free of garbage and pollution. This was the appeal by the EcoWaste Coalition days before the devotees flock anew to Luneta and Quiapo for the yearly Traslacion. “Piety is not an excuse to litter.  In fact, littering goes against the proverb ‘cleanliness is next to Godliness’ that most, if not all, Filipinos are aware of,” said group coordinator Aileen Lucero. “We invite all devout followers of the Black Nazarene to reflect on a key message uttered by Pope Francis and strive for an ecological devotion,” she added. She lamented the yearly feast is given a bad reputation because of the “brazen disrespect for the environment” as shown by trash on the streets, especially in Quiapo. The group wrote to Quiapo Church rector Msgr. Jose Clemente Ignacio to help publicize practical ways to prevent and reduce waste during the Traslacion. EcoWaste cited data from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority showing 28 truckloads or about 336 tons of garbage were collected in the 2014 Traslacion. (MNS)

Marco Yuchengco Santos, CEO of Boomerang Consultancy Pte. Ltd., with wife Carmen Romualdez Santos: They were also celebrating their 19th anniversary that evening.   Singapore’s Boomerang Consultancy Pte. Ltd., headed by chief executive officer Marco Yuchengco Santos,  in collaboration with Sphere (an events arm of Singapore Press Holdings, Inc.), brought to Manila a unique gastronomic experience. Borrowing the same idea that has brought delight to foodies and the culinary world in Singapore for the past four years, Epicurean Masters, presented by Banco de Oro (BDO), gathered world-class celebrity chefs last Nov. 19, 24 and Dec. 3.  I was able to attend the Dec. 3 event with chef Diego Chiarini at Finestra restaurant in Solaire. According to Santos, “I am part of a project with the Singapore government to promote culinary events here in Manila since Asia has been increasingly enjoying the limelight as a success story, seen as the major force leading the recovery of the global economy in the aftermath of the last financial crisis.  “One keenly watched aspect is the growing depth of rich and diverse offerings in exceptional dining cuisines across Asia. The records bear this out as the number of award-wining Michelin-star chefs in Asia has been steadily rising, from Tokyo, Osaka to Hong Kong and Macau. Indeed, Tokyo now has the largest number of Michelin-rated restaurants in the world.” Against this vibrant backdrop lies the creation of “Asian Masters” — a celebration of who we are to the world. Soldier killed, 3 hurt in rebel raids in Mindanao: Army

A report in the Philippine Daily Inquirer cited a report to officials including Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. indicating Filipinos are among the Southeast Asians being lured to conflict zones in the Middle East. Some Islamic militants are home-grown, just like the Abu Sayyaf (in photo), who have links with al-Qaeda terrorists. (Photo from http://vkb.isvg.org/Wiki/Groups/Abu_Sayyaf_Group_(ASG) Manila, Philippines | AFP |  – A soldier was killed and three others wounded when Muslim rebels simultaneously attacked military detachments in two southern Philippine provinces on Saturday, a military spokeswoman said. An hour-long gun battle broke out when separatist rebel group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters raided a camp in President Quirino town in Sultan Kudarat province shortly after midnight, Captain Jo-ann Petinglay said in a statement. The BIFF, which opposes current peace talks between the country’s main Muslim rebel group and the government, also launched an attack on a camp in General Salipada K. Pendatun town in Maguindanao province, she said. The raids were meant to sabotage the negotiations, Petinglay said, adding that the separatists “will continually be a potent spoiler to peace”. The BIFF split from the country’s main Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), in 2008 to fight for a separate Islamic state in the mainly Catholic Philippines. It made no comment about Saturday’s attacks. The military had also blamed the BIFF for a bus bombing in the south in December that claimed 10 lives, and an ambush in November that killed an army major and two of his Read More …
