Chiz: No plans of running for president in 2016

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Francis Escudero shrugged off the results of a latest Pulse Asia Survey where he placed fifth among a list of possible presidential candidates, saying he does not even have plans of running in 2016. “Wala naman akong balak tumakbong presidente. Hindi ko alam kung bakit nilalagay pa rin ako doon,” Escudero told reporters on Wednesday, referring to the survey. “Wala akong balak tumakbo. Ang plano ko, maglakad lang,” the senator said in jest. Maintaining his earlier position on the matter, Escudero stressed that it is still too early to even think of the 2016 elections. He also said politics was not discussed when he and Senator Grace Poe, whose ratings in the survey surged, were invited to the Christmas Party of the Liberal Party. “Party ‘yon, hindi partido. Kainan ‘yon, hindi meeting. Pasko ang ipinagdiwang at hindi pagtakbo,” said Escudero. The latest Pulse Asia survey showed Escudero placing fifth in a list of 14 possible presidential candidates in the 2016 election. The survey asks respondents which candidate they would likely vote for if elections were held today. Vice President Jejomar Binay topped the list with 26% of respondents saying they would likely vote for him if elections were held today. He is followed by Sen. Grace Poe (18), Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago (12), Joseph Estrada (10), and Escudero (7). Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas placed sixth in the survey with 6 percent, followed by Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Read More …

New AARP report reveals economic disparity among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Age 50+

Household income, consumer spending, and poverty levels vary widely among AAPI groups WASHINGTON, D.C.  – A new research report from AARP reveals economic disparity among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) age 50+. When viewed as a whole, AAPIs appear more financially secure than the general population, but the aggregate totals and median averages mask a large wealth and income gap among AAPIs. While a few AAPI groups have higher levels of household income and consumer spending, many more Asian ethnic groups are at or below poverty levels compared to the general population of the same age. “We are committed to bringing attention to the needs of AAPI 50+ so that gaps in knowledge about and services for these communities are met,” said Daphne Kwok, AARP Vice President of Multicultural Markets and Engagement for the Asian American and Pacific Islander Audience. “AAPIs are consistently understudied and underserved. Our research demonstrates that the priority needs of AAPIs differ by ethnic group, age, language, income, the length of time they’ve lived in the U.S., and other factors.” AARP’s report about the economic security of older AAPIs reveals that: AAPIs age 65+ are more economically vulnerable compared to the total U.S. population of the same age because they are less likely to have pensions, social security, and other financial products like health insurance and retirement savings: 14% of AAPIs age 65+ are on food stamps vs. 9% of the total U.S. 65+ population 13% of AAPIs age 65+ live in poverty vs. 9% of the total Read More …

The Girl + The Bull go Japanese in 12/10

Toro Onigiri beautifully topped with foie gras, negi, and balsamic maple syrup, but we all agreed that it could do with less rice! (Photo by Jin Perez of Jin Loves To Eat) I was actually trying to time this article to come out on Dec. 10. (You’ll find out why in a bit). But unfortunately, that date falls on a Wednesday, and our Philippine STAR food section comes out on Thursdays. My “Love Food!” group and I first visited 12/10 in October when it first opened. To be honest, while a lot of people want to be first in breaking a story, I’ve had several disappointments from writing about restaurants that were great in the beginning, but continued to deteriorate over time. So I decided to wait and observe for general feedback. From real-life recommendations — “Have you been to 12/10? It’s great!” — to Instagram posts from returning clientele, the overall feedback was positive. It was time. Tucked away in a nondescript neighborhood in Saguijo, 12/10 is located in a converted residential bungalow. The interiors, a collaboration with Serious Studio and Restock, are really — for lack of better word — cool, a slightly modern industrial feel of steel and wood, dressed with paintings (both framed and directly on the wall) and paper cutouts, which the owners describe as “an expression of ourselves.”  There is a gorgeous long bar where you will notice that the folks behind the bar — as well as the servers — are so young! President Benigno S. Aquino III listens as Filipina international singer Lea Salonga renders a song as an intermission number during the presentation of awards of the 2014 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas at the Rizal Ceremonial Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Friday (December 05). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno S. Aquino III on Friday honored 33 outstanding overseas Filipinos and foreign-based organizations during the conferment of the 2014 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas held in Malacañang Palace. In his speech, President Aquino expressed his gratitude to the awardees, noting that although they are based overseas, they have contributed to nation building. “While the awards you receive today are symbols of your success, I am hopeful that you also treat them as invitations: to continue your pursuit of excellence, and the way you bring pride and honor to our country,” he said. “Let us continue doing our very best to fulfill our individual roles in nation building. We have changed the way the world sees us, and we must build on this; we must ride our current momentum and show the world that the excellence of the Filipino knows no bounds.” The Chief Executive said that in the past four years of his administration, the support of the Filipino people has allowed his government to turn the country’s fortunes around for the better. With the help of the people, he said, the government has been able to carry out reforms, overhaul the Read More …

LA County to host used oil and filter recycling event in Lawndale

http://dpw.lacounty.gov/ LA County Public Works will host a free used motor oil and oil filter recycling event on December 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, at the Lawndale O’Reilly Auto Parts, located at 15122 ½ Hawthorne Blvd. When used oil is illegally dumped into stormdrains, it pollutes local water bodies and contaminates sources of clean drinking water. In fact, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it only takes one gallon of motor oil to contaminate as much as a million gallons of fresh water – equivalent to a year’s supply of drinking water for 50 people. In exchange for properly disposing of their used oil during the event, participants will be rewarded with free used oil containers, oil filters, shop towels, and funnels. Those recycling oil filters will receive one new oil filter. Promotional items are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Items for drop-off should be prepared by placing oil filters in sealed plastic bags and storing used motor oil in leak-proof containers. Used oil should not be mixed with any other liquid, including water. Used motor oil and oil filters can also be recycled for free at a local certified collection center or on weekends at a County-sponsored Household Hazardous Waste/Electronic Waste collection event. A full calendar of collection events and list of collection centers can be found at www.CleanLA.com. For additional information on the County’s oil and oil filter recycling program, call Edna Gandarilla, Program Manager, at (626) 458-6536.

Niño Muhlach won’t pressure Alonzo to become next Boy Wonder

Alonzo Muhlach (MNS Photo) Former “Boy Wonder of Philippine Cinema” Niño Muhlach is not predicting his four-year old son Alonzo  to become the next child superstar. When he started in showbiz (the same age as Alonzo), Niño revealed he felt it was all play, not work. He certainly didn’t feel his parents were pushing him to become a “superstar.” “Mine (stardom) just happened. With Alonzo, it could be easier for him because I’m an actor already and the opportunity would just come easily,” said Niño. He didn’t even plan on making Alonzo an actor, it just happened. Alonzo’s path to showbiz started when they joined “Bet on Your Baby,” after which he was approached by the production of “Pinoy Big Brother All In” for the boy to take part in the show. “I didn’t want to deny him the opportunity. But I still asked him if he wanted to be in the show and he said yes. So why not,” said Niño. The actor may not have seen things coming but he’s proud of his son. “People say  he  is a carbon copy of myself when I was his age. But it never entered my mind to enter him in showbiz otherwise I would have trained him to speak Tagalog more,” he said. At the moment, Niño and Alonzo are both in “My Big Bossing,” Vic Soto’s follow-up to “My Little Bossings” and an official entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. In the film, Niño plays a father Read More …

Philippines’ 10 deadliest storms

High waves brought about by strong winds pound a fish port, hours before typhoon Ruby passes near the city of Legazpi on Sunday. Ruby tore apart homes and sent waves crashing through coastal communities across central Philippines, adding to the spate of deadly disasters. (MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP |  – Typhoon Hagupit was on Sunday churning across the Philippines, the latest in a never-ending series of often-deadly storms that plague the Southeast Asian archipelago. With more than 7,100 islands, the country is hit by an average of 20 typhoons or tropical storms each year. The storms are created above the warmer waters of the Pacific Ocean near the equator, and the Philippines’ islands are often the first major landmass they hit as they move northwest. The following are the 10 deadliest typhoons on record in the Philippines*. 1. Super Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm ever recorded on land, destroys entire towns across the central Philippines on November 8, 2013. When the government stopped its count months later, more than 7,350 people were listed as dead or missing. 2. Tropical Storm Thelma unleashes flash floods on the central city of Ormoc on Leyte island on November 15, 1991, killing more than 5,100. 3. Typhoon Bopha smashes into the main southern island of Mindanao on December 3, 2012. Rarely hit by major storms, the unprepared region suffers about 1,900 people dead or missing. 4. Typhoon Ike hits the central Philippines on August 31, 1984, killing 1,363 people. 5. Typhoon Washi Read More …
