(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Pope Francis is set to meet leaders of other religions during his visit to the Philippines in January 2015, priests said Thursday. Fr. Melvin Mejia, secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said the meeting will take place at the University of Santo Tomas on January 18. During that day, the Pope will also meet with the youth sector. “One of the things close to the heart of Pope Francis are the different religions and faiths. Inter-religious dialogue is an important dimension of his papacy,” Mejia told reporters during the first CBCP media briefing on the papal visit. “Even before he became Pope, he was already engaging in inter-religious dialogue with other religions and denominations, so it is part of the visit.” Fr. Anton Pascual, president of Radio Veritas Philippines, said details of the meeting will be discussed in a press briefing on December 29. The Pope will arrive in Manila on January 15, 2015 on board the Sri Lankan flag carrier. He will be welcomed personally by President Benigno Aquino III. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A former Makati City official has asked the Office of the Ombudsman to revisit the case he filed against Vice President Jejomar Binay more than 10 years ago. In his letter, former Makati vice mayor Bobby Brillante decried the “hasty dismissal” of the case by the Sandiganbayan. “[The case] was raffled on Friday afternoon of October 27, 2006 and then hastily dismissed by the Sandiganbayan Third Division the following Monday, October 30, 2006, ‘for lack of probable cause without prejudice,’” Brillante, who filed the complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman in 2003, said in his letter. The case stemmed from Binay’s alleged anomalous purchase of office partitions and furniture for the Makati City Hall. In his letter, Brillante also narrated his experience being jailed after he spoke out against the Binay family. “When I assailed the highly irregular resolution and exposed the alleged P30-million bribery in exchange for the dismissal of this case in a press conference, I was cited in contempt by the same division… and was sentenced to one month Read More …

Residents try to put out a fire in Malabon city, north of Manila, October 21, 2013. The fire razed fifty houses and displaced an estimated 100 residents, local media reported.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division on Thursday found seven former officials of the Quezon City engineer’s office and two private individuals guilty of graft in connection with the deadly fire at the Ozone Disco in 1996, 18 years after the tragedy claimed 162 lives. They were sentenced to six to 10 years in jail. Convicted of graft and corrupt practices are: City Engineer Alfredo Macapugay Former City Engineer Renato Rivera Jr. Building Inspector Edgardo Reyes Chief, Enforcement and Inspection Division, Francisco Itliong Chief, Processing Division, Feliciano Sagana Engineer Petronillo De Llamas Building Inspector Rolando Ma Maid Private respondents Hermilo Ocampo and Ramon Ng, members of the board of directors and stockholders of Westwood Entertainment Co. Inc. which managed the Ozone disco, were also found guilty of similar charges. In a decision penned by Associate Justice Ma. Theresa Dolores Gomez-Estoesta, the court said that the officials had been remiss in approving the building permit of the disco bar. “There can never be a slapdash approval of a building permit and certificate of occupancy. To shrink from this duty will certainly run at risk all safety standards contemplated by the National Building Code,” the decision said. The Sandiganbayan in 2007 acquitted Macapugay of criminal liability in the same case. The Sandiganbayan Third Division at that time said the court Read More …

President Benigno S. Aquino III tours and views the exhibit on the 75th Founding Anniversary Celebration of the Department of National Defense at the AFP Theater in Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Monday (November 17). Also in photo is Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – After teasing last August he may opt to stay in office beyond 2016, President Benigno Aquino III is now insisting he will no longer seek a second term. In an interview with reporters in Singapore where he is on a two-day working visit, Aquino said he wants to move away from the so-called politics of personalities to issues instead. He also said he does not want a repeat of what happened to the late former President Ferdinand Marcos, who stayed in power for nearly 20 years. When asked what he plans to do when his term ends – and there is a one-year ban on taking any government post – he said he will use the time to “recharge.” Aquino also said he is inclined not to subscribe to newspapers or watch television, jokingly adding that he has had his fill of “energetic media” covering him. He also recalled his late mother Cory, who stepped down from office in 1992 but continued to reach out and help people through her own way – microfinancing. Aquino’s announcement reiterated his stand last October when he shut down the possibility of seeking a second term. “I don’t think that’s a right solution. We Read More …

A promise is a promise: Even during his first term, President Barack Obama has wanted to reform the broken immigration system. Prior to Thursday’s announcement, Obama has been telling America of his plan to overhaul the immigration system as in his remarks on immigration reform at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas back way back in January 2013. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza) WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama takes executive action Thursday to left the threat of deportation for some five million people, 44 percent of the estimated 11.3 million immigrants living illegally in the United States. The nation’s undocumented people hail mostly from Mexico and Central America, and 60 percent of them live in just six US states: California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Texas. Half of them have lived in the US for 13 years or more. Here are details of Obama’s sweeping plan. Authorization for three years A new deferred action program will shield up to four million undocumented immigrants from deportation, allowing them to apply for three-year work permits. Those eligible must have been in the United States for more than five years, and be a parent of a US citizen or of a legal permanent resident born on or before November 20, the date of Obama’s order. 2014 L.A. Auto Show – Lexus LF-C2 ConceptThe concept has an even more pronounced grille.©Lexus (Relaxnews) – Lexus claims that the car is currently an exploration of design themes, but it’s very likely that the company is also testing the waters with the LF-C2, seeing how people respond to it and if a production version is feasible. And if it does go from auto show to car showroom, expect it to carry the RC badge and be offered as a drop-top alternative to the company’s recently launched RC coupé. The car, unveiled at the LA Auto Show, boasts an even more extreme version of Lexus’s new Spindle Grille, which conjures up images of the Predator form the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film. Beyond that striking grille, the car’s flowing but angular lines are more heightened in execution but very similar to those sported by the aforementioned RC coupé. Lexus has made no mention of what might lurk beneath the hood but inside, things are bang up to date, and then some. The cabin is in a 2+2 layout so rear legroom will be tight. Still there’s plenty of headroom because the concept car has no roof at all, not even an emergency panel for when there’s an unexpected downpour. The rear seats are separated by the car’s center console. It actually starts where the rear seats meet the car’s body and progresses through the cabin, right up to the dashboard fascia. It houses the gear lever and a central touch screen Read More …
