Mercedes AMG GT: A pure sports car for serious drivers

The Mercedes-AMG GT: The new car wants to challenge the Porsche 911 Turbo. ©Mercedes-Benz (Relaxnews) – Compact, agile, eco-friendly yet powerful and practical to boot, the Mercedes-AMG GT has its sights set on wowing not just the Porsche 911 faithful but potential Lamborghini, Aston Martin and even McLaren clients. Unveiled to the world’s motoring press at a special event on Tuesday night, the Mercedes-AMG GT is a replacement for the company’s outgoing SLS AMG, a car that was all about conspicuous performance. And although the Mercedes-AMG GT and its predecessor clearly share some DNA – some of its proportions are exaggerated on purpose, for example – it has been built with a focus on lifestyle rather than just good or striking looks and on offering a serious alternative to a host of similarly attractive serious drivers’ cars. “The new Mercedes-AMG GT is a sports car in its purest form,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG. “Breathtaking proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and flowing lines turn the new AMG into a contemporary sports car which embodies the spirit of the glorious Mercedes sports cars. The GT is a consummate combination of beauty and intelligence.” But will beauty and intelligence be enough for the car to break into a market dominated by the Porsche 911 Turbo, which offers blistering performance, bulletproof build quality and sufficient levels of comfort, practicality and exclusivity to work as an almost everyday car? On paper, the answer is ‘yes’. The range-topping ‘S’ variant can go from Read More …

Karylle no comment on Dingdong-Marian wedding

Karylle (MNS photo) Singer-TV host Karylle chose not to comment when asked about the upcoming wedding of her ex-boyfriend, actor Dingdong Dantes, and fiancé Marian Rivera. “Ako kasi, wala na ako sa eksenang ‘yon, so ayoko naman ding sumingit. I think iyon nalang siguro for now ang sasabihin ko,” Karylle said. She added, “Everyone deserves to have a wonderful wedding, and that’s what I’ve experienced. So huwag natin sirain ’yung maganda.” Dingdong and Karylle broke up in 2008 amid talks that the former was making sweet music with Marian, his co-star on the how-defunct series “MariMar.” Karylle married Spongecola frontman Yael Yuzon early this year. She’s also made it clear that all is well between her and Marian. (MNS)

‘Losing bidder’ in Makati infra projects didn’t bid

Engr. Mario Hechanova, former head of the Makati City government’s general services department and vice chairman of the bids and accounts committee, testifies before a Senate inquiry on alleged overpricing in the Makati City Hall Building 2 on Thursday, September 4. He said the bidding for the alleged overpriced construction of the building was rigged. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The head of a construction firm that lost to Hilmarc’s Construction Corporation in the bid for the Makati City Hall Building 2 has denied Thursday ever bidding for the project. This is despite documents showing that the firm was outbidded by Hilmarc’s for the first phase of the parking building by only P317,357.17 in 2007. Alejandro Tengco, CEO of JBros Construction Corp., said his company has never participated or purchased any bid documents for any infrastructure project in Makati City. He pointed out his firm was not even qualified to participate in the bidding for the Makati City Hall building 2. Documents showed Hilmarc’s submitted a bid of P386,998,154.20 for the first phase of the project, compared to the JBros bid of P387,315,511.37. “Di ko alam na kami ang number 2 dahil hindi naman kami nagparticipate sa bidding na yun. Maliwanag sa records namin hindi kami nag participate sa bidding,” Tengco told the Senate blue ribbon sub-committee. Similarly, he was also surprised when told that his company was again outbidded by Hilmarc’s for the Makati Science High School project. He said it was the first time that he had heard Read More …

MILF: ‘Be not afraid’ of the Bangsamoro

Bangsamoro (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The House of Representatives on Wednesday conducted its first committee hearing on the proposed Bangsamoro basic law, which seeks to implement the signed peace deal between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Present for the ad hoc committee hearing are Presidential Adviser for Peace Process Secretary Teresita “Ging” Deles, government peace panel chief negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, and MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal. In his speech before the committee, Iqbal said Congress should not be afraid and instead be hopeful about the proposed law that seeks to create a Bangsamoro political entity replacing the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). “Let us warn you of people who would want to sow fear instead of hope in your hearts and in the hearts of the Filipino people. Their aim is to stop the establishment of the Bangsamoro and for this, they will take advantage of the deeply held biases and prejudices of the people,” Iqbal said. “They will use words like ‘dismemberment of the Republic,’ ‘sell-out,’ ‘violation of the Constitution,’ ‘surrender,’ ‘state within the state,’ and even a ‘ploy for eventual independence,’” he added. “To all of these, we say: Be not afraid. To the Filipino people: Be not afraid,” Iqbal said. He clarified that the Bansamoro state is not a state within a state. “Instead of dismemberment of the Republic, the Bangsamoro will further unite our peoples. There shall be no state within a state. The Philippine state shall remain sovereign. We Read More …

The phabletized future

Having written with dead seriousness about writing for six straight columns, I hope my readers will indulge me this digression — a periodic, practically biennial, one — having to do with utter frivolity. Okay, I’ll fess up: I have the new iPhone 6. Naturally. I’ve been an incorrigible Apple fanboy since the mid-1980s — practically since Apple was born — and so no one should be surprised by my prompt (I’ll say “timely”) acquisition of this new bauble, among 10 million other lunatics who snapped up the 6 and its bigger sibling, the 6+, in the gadget’s first three days of being on sale in the global market. Like an arthritic hippie or a superannuated rebel, I should have no business, as a card-carrying senior, salivating over shiny new toys better seen on 30-somethings dashing off to work or to a dinner date. Well, maybe a little. US demographic studies from 2012 suggest that nearly one-fourth of all iPhone users are 55 and older (and a bit lower for Android and BlackBerry users), so older guys (men use it more than women, 60-40 percent) still make up a good chunk of the iPhone market. That makes sense, because these things don’t come cheap. Along with literally millions of other people in the US and around the world, I stayed up until dawn on September 12 on the US East Coast to get my order in, and after an interminably long week during which I could only distract myself by doing Read More …

Andi hurt over Jake’s kissing photo

Andi Eigenmann (MNS Photo) Actress Andi Eigenmann has opened up about the controversial photo of her rumored boyfriend Jake Ejercito supposedly kissing another girl. Although she had already seemingly called out Jake on Facebook by posting a link to the item and photo that appeared on an entertainment blog site, she said, “Siyempre masakit pero wala tayong magagawa, it happened already.” She shared that she had already spoken with Jake about the story behind the viral picture. Noting that while she “would really love to forgive” him, Andi, who is still mourning on the death of her father Mark Gil, said she needs space for now. The 24-year-old single mom is moving on and focusing on things that are “more important to me and deserve my attention and my love.” She added, “I’m not going to dwell on something that shouldn’t be important… not waste my time on something that doesn’t treat me of any importance.” Although she keeps her “never say never” attitude because “it’s always a matter of choice,” the actress pointed out, “If we want to fix things, we can. Pero I guess everything happens in its own time. Right now is not the right time.” Following the issue, Jake once again stirred intrigue on social media after supposedly deleting tweets about not giving up on love. Fashion Pulis posted a screengrab of one of the purported missing tweet that read: “Bury the past, build a castle where they lay. Be my princess again @andieigengirl.” This was Read More …

OFW deployment ban to Venezuela lifted

President Benigno S. Aquino III, accompanied by Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, arrives for the Pre-Labor Day Dialogue at the Heroes Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Tuesday (April 30). The conduct of Pre-Labor Day Dialogue is pursuant to the 22-point Labor and Employment Agenda of President Aquino, which essentially consists of among others, the following directives: promote not only the constitutionally protected rights of workers but also their right to participate in the policymaking process; and work with the private and labor sector to strengthen tripartite cooperation and promote industrial peace. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has lifted the ban on deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Venezuela. In a statement, Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said that deployment ban to Venezuela was lifted after the Crisis Alert Level was lowered from level 2 (restriction phase) to level 1 (precautionary phase). “The POEA Governing Board has decided to lift the deployment ban to Venezuela and to allow the processing and deployment thereto of all Filipino workers to include both returning/vacationing and new-hire workers,” Baldoz said. The POEA governing board imposed a temporary suspension on the processing and deployment of newly-hired OFWs to Venezuela after DFA raised Crisis Alert Level 2 in the country.
