Dingdong denies proposal politically motivated

Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes (MNS photo) Groom-to be Dingdong Dantes has refuted speculations that his televised marriage proposal to Marian Rivera is connected to his rumored plan to enter politics in 2016. He deems it an unfair judgment. Actually, rumors about Dingdong entering the political arena had long been speculated. In fact, many surmised that his appointment as Youth Commissioner at Large, as something that points towards this alleged goal, apart from him being among supporters of PNoy. Note, however, that Dingdong has always denied the issue. Dingdong proposed to Marian during the live telecast of the latter’s dance and variety show Saturday night, which, subsequently, has become the talk of the town. Dingdong said he proposed because of “pure love” and nothing else. He shared further that he has long realized Marian is “The One.” He was just waiting for the perfect moment to propose to her. The actor said he made it public for the benefit of their fans and supporters. Dingdong stressed this again at the announcement of their wedding date a few hours ago, at the Executive Lounge of GMA7. He said that the fans, as with the Kapuso Network, have been part of their love story and that, it was only proper to announce it with them in mind. GMA7′s “Royal Couple” (Dingdong and Marian, who else?) announced that their wedding will be held on Dec. 30, at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral along Lantana Street in Cubao, Quezon City. Asked why they chose a Read More …

5-hour Pinoy film wins prestigious award

“From What Is Before” Film by Lav Diaz MANILA (AFP) – The Philippine director of an international award-winning movie returned home Monday to presidential accolades and the challenge of finding an audience for his five-hour film. Lav Diaz, whose movie “From What Is Before” scooped the coveted Golden Leopard prize at the prestigious Locarno film festival in Switzerland at the weekend, said his victory was a boost for Philippine cinema. “It’s good for the Filipino people. It’s good for Filipino cinema. Our work is on par with other cinemas of the world,” he told AFP hours after returning. Diaz, 55, whose black-and-white film recounts the strange events that befall an isolated village in the Philippines in 1972 during the era of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, won the festival’s top prize while his lead actress Hazel Orencio won best actress. Diaz said in the coming days he would be looking for venues to show the movie in its entirety and to distribute it both locally and abroad. “That is the struggle of (non-commercial) cinema,” he said, remarking that Hollywood had conditioned people to expect that movies should only be about two hours long. But he said this was a misconception, adding that at Locarno, his movie was screened to a full-house thrice with the audience staying to the end. “They didn’t want the film to end,” he laughed. President Benigno Aquino’s spokesman Herminio Coloma congratulated Diaz and Orenico, saying “once again, we have shown to the world that the Filipinos are undeniably Read More …

President Benigno S. Aquino III receives a warm welcome from the locals during the Inauguration of the Ninoy Aquino Bridge and its Connecting Road Networks in Barangay San Luis, Tuao, Cagayan on Monday (August 18, 2014). The newly constructed 360-meter Ninoy Aquino Bridge across the Chico River, costs P599.40 million, is connected to two other small bridges, the 40-meter Malummin and the 20-meterAngag bridge. MANILA (Mabuhay) – Vice President Jejomar Binay said he is ready to square off with President Benigno Aquino III in 2016 should the Chief Executive decide to run for reelection. “Opo,” Binay told reporters on Friday when asked if he would still run for the country’s highest post in case Aquino decides to run too in 2016. He said it has always been his dream to become President. “2010 pa sabi ko naman sa inyo kayong mga media tanong ng tanong, sabi ko, ‘Opo, bata pa ako pinangarap ko na.’” “Naghanda naman po ako rito, nakapag-aral naman ako. Pangalawa, ako naman ay dalawampu’t isang taong mayor. Kaya dadalhin ko sa pwesto ng pagkapangulo ang aking kahinatnan at kakayahan,” he said. However, Binay thinks a battle between him and Aquino is far-fetched. He said he does not believe the President will seek a term extension through Charter change. While he strongly disagrees with Aquino’s new stance on Charter change, he lays the blame squarely on the President’s advisers. “Ang pagkakatanda ko sabi ni Presidente magkukonsulta siya sa kaniyang mga bossing. Okay lang yun. Pero sana huwag siyang Read More …

(MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III wants to clip the powers of the Judiciary because he thinks he is the “prophet of righteousness,” a law dean said Monday. Fr. Ranhilio Aquino, dean of the San Beda College’s Graduate School of Law, said that the President believes the “mental fallacy” that “nobody else is righteous” and all others are corrupt. “He does not want the Supreme Court to stand in the way because this man is so convinced that he is the prophet of righteousness so anybody else who doesn’t agree with him cannot be righteous,” the law dean said. In the first place, he said there was even no judicial breach on the part of the high court. “All that was being asked by the Supreme Court was whether or not DAP (Disbursement Acceleration Program) was in accord with the constitution which is clearly a justiciable issue,” he said, pointing out that the issue was raised by the people to be acted upon by the court. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said on Monday the government should seriously consider sending home 115 Filipino soldiers in Liberia as Ebola virus is expected to wreak havoc in West Africa for the next six months. “If Ebola continues to thrive up to six months in West Africa, we better pull out our soldiers in Liberia. Their safety and lives must be given priority now and that is a better option to do now than continue risking them there with the dreaded disease,” Romualdez stressed, adding that the government should consider the recommendation of the Department of National Defense (DND) to pull out the Filipino troops in Liberia. Romualdez reiterated his call for the officials of the Department of Health (DOH) to double their efforts in ensuring that the country remains Ebola-free. “We commend them for their work, but our health officials should continue to be vigilant and double their efforts in ensuring an Ebola-free Philippines,” Romualdez said. Study: Eating noodles may lead to cardiometabolic syndrome

MANILA, Philippines – Everyone who loves ‘instant’ consumes at least a bowl or two of noodles once a week. From students who have a tight budget to foodies who love ramen. Because of this, noodles are one of the most popular staple foods today. But a recent study shows that a bowl of these delicious curly strands could send you to an early grave. Studies show that people who consume noodles two to three times a week is at risk of having cardiometabolic syndrome – a combination of maladaptive cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, prothrombotic, and inflammatory abnormalities, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. These cardiovascular and metabolic derangements individually and interdependently lead to a substantial increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality, making the cardiometabolic syndrome an established and strong risk factor for premature and severe CVD and stroke. The recent study published in Journal of Nutrition and lead by Dr. Hyun Joon Shin claims that the damage to health caused by noodles is particularly worse in women. Because one of the highest countries to consume noodles is South Korea, the study focused on people from South Korea. Moreover, heart disease is not an unfamiliar disease to South Koreans. Dr. Shin then tried to find if there is a correlation between the poor health and consumption of noodles. It was found out that the effect of noodles is worse in women than men, probably caused by a substance Bisphenol A (BPA) in the styrofoam containers of these noodles that Read More …
