(MNS photo) MANILA (AFP) – The Philippines said Tuesday it would send a ship to pick up at least 700 of its nationals trapped in strife-torn Libya as it presses on with efforts to rescue thousands of workers. Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said it would pick up Filipinos from Misrata and Benghazi and hopefully Sirte, adding that others could still flee across the land border to Tunisia. “We have 400 from Misrata, we have 300 from Benghazi and we have something like a couple of hundred from Sirte but the boat cannot go into Sirte because it’s a shallow harbour so we need a small vessel to bring the people back out to the boat,” he said. He said the ship, chartered for about $1.8 million which can carry 1,500 passengers, would reach Libya at the end of the week “We are counting on getting as many people as possible,” so they can be brought to safety in Malta, he said. The Department of Health said it will continue to monitor the Ebola virus situation every day, and is keeping watch over seven migrant workers recently repatriated from Sierra Leone, one of the Ebola-affected areas. As of July August 8, more than 800 Ebola-related deaths have been reported. MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Philippine government is taking all necessary precautions to ensure that the dreaded Ebola virus now spreading in West Africa will not reach the country. “The Department of Health has made all necessary preparations, making sure if Ebola comes, we have all the necessary capacity, laboratory tests, as well as negative pressure rooms where to confine them,” said Health Secretary Enrique Ona. According to Ona, the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Alabang is equipped with 6 negative pressure rooms. “Kung ang pasyente nasa loob, kasi negative pressure, yung kwartong yun ang hangin doon lamang. Hindi lumalabas ang hanging palabas,” he explained. The Lung Center of the Philippines in Quezon City also has two negative pressure rooms, he said. The RITM also has a unit which monitors new information, treatment and diagnostic procedures for newly emerging or even re-emerging diseases. Ona said the DOH, together with the Department of Foreign Affairs as well as the Department of Labor and Employment, is closely monitoring and working with overseas Filipino workers in countries where the virus has spread. Aspirin greatly reduces the risk of developing and dying from bowel, stomach and oesophageal cancer, its authors said. They found that taking aspirin for 10 years could cut bowel cancer cases by around 35 percent and deaths by 40 percent. Rates of oesophageal and stomach cancers were cut by 30 percent and deaths from these cancers by 35-50 percent. To gain these benefits meant people had to start taking a daily dose of 75-100 mg for at least five years and probably 10 years between the ages of 50 and 65. No benefit was seen while they took aspirin for the first three years, and death rates were only reduced after five years. Aspirin has long been considered to be a boost in the fight against cardiovascular disease and has also been investigated for reputed anti-cancer effects. This is the first to throw up broad evidence that it can be a shield against these types of cancer, the scientists said. The study, published in the European cancer journal Annals of Oncology, was led by Jack Cuzick, a professor at the the Centre for Cancer Prevention at Queen Mary University of London.
