Duterte greets war veterans during the celebration of the National Heroes’ Day at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on August 29.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – Allaying fears that he is a dictator in the making, President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday vowed that he will not be the next Ferdinand Marcos Sr. “Wala ako balak maging diktador. Abugado ako. Ang nanay ko Yellow Friday [Movement] sa Davao. Sabihin nila maging Marcos [ako], far from it,” he told the 129 retrenched OFWs who arrived home from Saudi Arabia. “I am just doing my duty or else I will compromise [the] next generation,” he said, defending his administration’s tough stance against the illegal drug problem. Duterte’s mother, Soledad, was an activist who fought against the Marcos dictatorship in the then-undivided Davao. Fears that Duterte is following the late strongman’s footsteps arose when he threatened to declare martial law following a clash with Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno regarding the supposed involvement of several judges in the illegal drug trade. Malacañang spokespersons, however, said Duterte’s comment was just an exaggeration to emphasize the gravity of the drug menace, which they likened to a national security threat. Duterte apologized to Sereno for the “harsh words.” (MNS)

Accompanied by representatives of the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development Foundation, Inc., (PLCPD) in the Senate, the delegation is in Manila on a study tour. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Senators have opposing positions on the possibility of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) being revived to ensure the long-term supply of energy in the country. At the hearing of the Senate committee on energy Wednesday, Energy Sec. Alfonso Cusi said he was in favor of reviving the 620-megawatt nuclear plant, declaring that it was “safe for use.” “I have a bias. If I will make a decision, I will open it but it’s not for me to decide, it’s for the country to decide,” Cusi told the committee. While Cusi assured that we have sufficient supply, reviving the Bataan plant would beef up power reserves, lowering the risk of parts of the country being placed under yellow and red alerts as what happened in recent months. “What we are trying to do is to have that reserve. We have to make that as a policy. Is that 5 percent of the demand, 10, 15 or 20 percent?” Cusi said. “Napakanipis ng reserve. Pag nakuha ‘yun, we would have Read More …

President Rodrigo R. Duterte is welcomed by Western Mindanao Command chief Lieutenant General Mayoralgo dela Cruz during his arrival at Edwin Andrews Airbase in Zamboanga City on July 21. (MNS photo) MANILA, Aug 29 (Mabuhay) — President Duterte on Monday urged China to maintain camaraderie with Filipinos as his government negotiates with Beijing over rival claims to the South China Sea. “If we continue to treat each other us brothers, and understand, especially the plight of [Filipino] fishermen — I know the dynamics inside China, it has been explained to me very well — the Chinese people might find place a place in their hearts for the Filipinos,” Duterte told Ambassador Zhao Jianhua in a speech at the National Heroes Day rites. “I hope you treat us like your brothers, not your enemies and take note of the plight of our citizens,” he added. In talking with China, Duterte promised that he will postpone bringing up the ruling of United Nations-backed court that invalidated China’s economic claims to the resource-rich sea. But he also clarified that he will “lay bare his position” before Chinese officials someday. “I will not use the judgment arbitral, but I would one day sit in front of your representative or you and lay bare my position,” Duterte said. “For now, I want to just talk to you, maybe give us time to build our forces also. You have so much superiority,” he added. He also guaranteed that “I do not go to war. If I Read More …

Comelec suspends ballot printing for barangay, SK polls

MANILA, Aug 29 (Mabuhay) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has temporarily suspended the printing of ballots for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections. According to Comelec chief Andres Bautista, this is in line with a seeming agreement to push the elections back anew between President Rodrigo Duterte and Congress. “As you know, it seem that it’s already a consensus between the President and Congress to postpone the barangay and SK elections. We deemed it prudent to first suspend the ballot printing,” Bautista said. Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Bautista personally observes the biometric registration of voters for the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections at the Lucky China Mall in Binondo, Manila on Friday (July 22, 2016). (MNS photo) The poll chief said they “are hopeful that Congress will pass a law quickly regarding the postponement.” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said printing will resume by September 1 if there is no confirmation of postponement. The poll body has to print a total of 85 million ballots—57 million for barangay elections, and the remaining 28 million for SK. Printing began on August 21, with a deadline slated on October 21. So far, at least 411,000 ballots have been printed for Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur. The postponement of the said elections is deemed the “most prevailing sentiment” among lawmakers. Duterte—who earlier said barangay and SK polls must push through this year—said Friday that he is now in favor of the postponement because of the possibility of “drug Read More …
