Bong Revilla asks SC to stop his prosecution

Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – With his impending arrest, beleaguered Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Thursday asked the Supreme Court for the third time to stop the Office of the Ombudsman and the Sandiganbayan from prosecuting him in connection with his alleged involvement in the P10-billion pork barrel scam that has rocked the country since last year. In his third petition for certiorari before the high tribunal, Revilla said the Ombudsman committed grave abuse of discretion and violated his right to due process when it issued a resolution last March 28 finding probable cause to charge him with plunder along with fellow Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada. He said that the Ombudsman committed the same violation when it dismissed his motion for reconsideration last June 4. Revilla also challenged the basis of the Ombudsman’s finding of probable cause against him saying that nowhere in its resolution has the anti-graft agency showed that he stole P50 million of government funds, the amount that qualifies him for the charge of plunder. “The Ombudsman’s resolution failed to present any proof that Senator Revilla has received even a single centavo as kickback from his pork barrel allocation,” the 81-page motion said. This, he added, is more than enough reason for the SC to stop the Ombudsman. He explained that the High Court needs to intervene as he is under threat of being arrested and detained without bail as plunder is a non-bailable offense. Further, the senator Read More …

‘Less than 10’ in ‘pork’ scam may have fled PHL: BI chief

President Benigno Aquino III says Sen. Jinggoy Estrada (shown above while speaking on the podium) may know more about the alleged harassment and extortion attempts on Janet Lim Napoles in 2013, a few months before the pork barrel fund scam controversy hit the headlines. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – “Less than 10” of the more than 50 individuals criminally charged before the Sandiganbayan over the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam might have already left the country, Immigration Commissioner Siegfred Mison said Thursday. Mison made the revelation after emerging from a meeting with Justice Secretary Leila de Lima in Manila. The Immigration chief, however, said his office is still verifying the names of those who might have already left, especially those with common names. He said the Bureau of Immigration would be asking the Sandiganbayan for more details on the accused individuals, including their full names – middle names included – and dates of birth to determine if the people on their records to have left where the same ones who had been indicted. On Wednesday, De Lima said she had already directed the Bureau of Immigration to be on the lookout for pork barrel fund scam suspects who would be attempting to flee. De Lima said that even if arrest warrants have not yet been issued by the anti-graft court, the plunder and graft suspects can still be restrained from leaving the country through the hold departure orders that the Sandiganbayan had issued. Covered by the HDOs were Senate Minority Read More …

Micro-implant could revolutionize cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment

A micro-implant designed to monitor eye health could help those with a risk for glaucoma. ©Jacek Bieniek/shutterstock.com (Relaxnews) – An innovative high tech information center for the eye is in the works, and it’s not Google Glass. Engineers at the University of Washington have designed a pressure sensor to detect conditions in the eyes that could lead to glaucoma. The low-pressure sensor is a micro-chip that attaches to a surgically implanted, artificial lens. The sensor provides instantaneous pressure tracking, transmitted wirelessly using radio waves. A thin circular antenna in the lens, roughly the same circumference of the iris, powers the sensor, which communicates with a nearby receiver should a change in pressure occur. According to researchers, cataract surgery is the right moment for implantation. “The implementation of the monitoring device has to be well-suited clinically and must be designed to be simple and reliable,” says Tueng Shen, a collaborator and UW professor of ophthalmology. “We want every surgeon who does cataract surgeries to be able to use this.” Cataract surgery often involves replacing a malfunctioning natural optic lens with an artificial one. Adding the pressure sensor to the artificial lens could save the patient from future operations, according to researchers. “No one has ever put electronics inside the lens of the eye, so this is a little more radical,” said Karl Böhringer, a UW professor of electrical engineering and of bioengineering. “We have shown this is possible in principle. If you can fit this sensor device into an intraocular lens Read More …
