PNoy still trusts TESDA chief Villanueva – Palace

President Benigno S. Aquino III graces the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III continues to trust Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) Director General Joel Villanueva despite reports that he will also be charged for the alleged misuse of pork barrel funds, Malacañang said Monday. This vote of confidence from Aquino was confirmed by Presidential Communications Operations Office head Herminio Coloma Jr. during a press conference at the Palace. “Yes,” Coloma told reporters when asked if the President still trusts Villanueva. Coloma issued the statement after a Philippine Daily Inquirer report said malversation charges will be filed against Villanueva, Senator Gregorio Honasan, and eight former and current members of the House of Representatives in connection with the alleged misuse of pork barrel funds from 2007 to 2009. Villanueva was still a congressman during that period. He was representative of the Citizen’s Battle Against Corruption in the House from 2001 to 2010. Coloma, however, said it would be best to wait for the official statement from the Department of Justice (DOJ) on the issue. “It would be inappropriate to comment at this time this would be purely speculative,” he said. The President has repeatedly sided with Cabinet members tagged in the scam, specifically Budget Sec. Butch Abad and Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala. The two were tagged by alleged scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles in her affidavit but the DOJ has yet to include them in any complaint. (MNS)

(U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Ulugan Bay, a small, picturesque cove encircled by thick mangroves, has suddenly become a vital part of the Philippine military’s efforts to shore up its defense of contested South China Sea islands and waters. “This is the frontline of our territorial defense operations in the Kalayaan island group,” President Benigno Aquino declared last month as he inspected the progress of a recently announced upgrade of a tiny naval station on the bay. Ulugan is on the west coast of the large western Philippine island of Palawan, only 160 kilometres (100 miles) from a small group of islands and islets within the Spratly archipelago known locally as the Kalayaan group. The Spratlys are among the most prized assets in the decades-long but increasingly hostile struggle for control of parts of the South China Sea. The sea has Read More …

De Lima refuses to confirm inclusion of Honasan, others in 3rd batch of ‘pork’ cases

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Monday refused to confirm a newspaper report that said Sen. Gringo Honasan is among the next batch of individuals who will soon face charges in connection with the P10-billion pork barrel scam. “At this point, I cannot confirm nor deny kung accurate ba iyan or what kasi alam niyo naman consistent iyong ating policy na we only announce kapag na-file na,” De Lima said. De Lima was reacting to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report that said based on a reliable source, Honasan is among the respondents in the third batch of cases that will be filed by the Department of Justice in connection with the pork barrel scam. She said the special task force created by the DOJ under Undersecretary Jose Justiniano has already told her it has nothing to do with the supposed leak of information. “I actually immediately asked iyong special task force kung may kinalaman sila dyan sa [leak] na iyan. Ang sabi nila ‘No,’ hindi nila alam saang galing iyang leakage na iyan,” she said. De Lima said the DOJ and the National Bureau of Investigation have yet to decide whether to file the third batch of criminal charges this week. Aside from Honasan, other supposed respondents in the third batch of cases are: Director General Joel Villanueva of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), La Union Rep. Victor Ortega (first district), former La Union Rep. Manuel Ortega, Read More …

The OFWs availed the government’s mandatory repatriation program after the Philippine authorities declared alert level 4 in Egypt, meaning all Filipinos there are forced to go home. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday appealed to Filipinos who have relatives in Iraq to convince them to return to the Philippines while the situation there is still manageable. “Tinatawagan natin ang ating mga kababayan sa Pilipinas na may kaanak o mahal sa buhay na nasa Iraq, sana naman po ay himukin nila, kumbinsihin nila ang mga kaanak o mahal sa buhay na lumikas na po sa Iraq habang may pagkakataon pa po,” DFA spokesperson Charles Jose said. In Malacañang, Presidential Communications Operations Office head Herminio Coloma Jr. likewise appealed to Filipinos in danger zones to return to the country. “We are calling on our residents, especially those who are in the danger zones, to voluntary repatriate themselves or return to the Philippines at government expense,” he said. But he said that they are not forcing anyone to do anything against their will, although they have deployed a quick response team to talk to them. On Saturday, the DFA raised alert level 3 for most parts of Iraq due to the deteriorating security situation there. Under Read More …

Enrile files supplemental motion at Sandiganbayan to oppose warrant of arrest

President Benigno S. Aquino III converses with Vice President Jejomar Binay during the 5th Global Conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) Opening Ceremony at the Reception Hall, Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on Thursday (January 31, 2013). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Juan Ponce Enrile filed Monday a supplemental motion to oppose the issuance of a warrant against him over his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam. In his 30-page motion, Enrile said he was not “informed of the nature and cause of accusation against him.” Because of this, the case should be dismissed because the information against him is void, the motion read. “Being void for non-compliance with the requirement of the Constitution that in all criminal prosecution, the accused ‘be informed of the nature and cause of accusation against him,’ no warrant of arrest may be issued…” the motion read. Enrile’s camp lawyers also said the plunder charge against Enrile did not categorically state that the former Senate President received kickbacks in a “combination or series of overt criminal acts.” “The phrase ‘combination or series of overt criminal acts’ in the information is but a conclusion of law, and not a statement of fact…” the motion further claimed. “It is respectfully prayed that no warrant of arrest be issued against the accused in the instant case. Since the information is void, the case should further be dismissed,” the motion added. Aside from Enrile, Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Read More …

Even the best education can’t get you a salary that’s enough to raise a family),” she recalled. “Nahiya ako sa tatay ko. I felt so embarrassed because I married right after I graduated.” Poe said she did not want to keep depending on her parents. Fathers remembered after 52 years

BUENA PARK TENNIS CIRCLE TOURNEY: Circle: One of the most active tennis clubs at the Boisseranc Park in Buena is the Buena Park Tennis Circe whose membership continues to grow under the leadership of Cesar Ramico, Coordinator: Rico Taruc, Public Relations Officer, and Rey Surambao, Finance Officer. An on-going tournament, one that comes on the heels of the previous successful tourney, will keep the members busy for the days ahead wielding their tennis racquets. It took more than half a century before someone realized that fathers too need to be remembered for their contributions in the family like mothers whose day was commemorated last month. A Civil War veteran widower, William Jackson Smart, who raised his six children by himself after the death of his wife giving birth to their sixth child  is to be credited for this special day of remembrance. One his children, Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas, realized the tremendous difficulties her dad had to go through in raising a family as a single parent when she herself went through the same experience when she married and had her own children. She, too, went through the difficulties and challenges as a single parent. Father’s Day was founded at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Three different people shared the honor of inventing Father’s Day celebrated on the third Sunday in June to honor of millions of fathers in the United States. Palace: Nothing irregular about long wait for arrests in ‘pork’ scam

Senate Minority leader Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, one of the accused in the so-called pork barrel scam, stresses a point in interpellating Senator Koko Pimentel III, sponsor of the Sandigan Bill, who sought the support of his colleagues for the passage of the measure, seeking to improve the disposition of cases in the Sandiganbayan on Wednesday (March 5) at the Session Hall, Senate Bldg in Pasay City. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday said it sees nothing irregular with the possible long “wait” for the arrest of personalities charged before the Sandiganbayan for the P10-billion pork barrel scam. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said there are “voluminous” documents to be studied by the graft court justices handling the graft and plunder cases against the respondents. “That is not out of the ordinary considering [the] voluminous documents…Talagang totoo namang marami ang dokumento na isinumite,” Valte said on government-run dzRB radio. “Hindi tayo magugulat kung… hindi lang kumplikado but the sheer volume ng mga dokumento. Ito ang review nila, …they will need some time,” she added. Among those charged for the scam are suspected mastermind Janet Napoles and Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., and private individuals. On Friday, the cases against the personalities charged were raffled off in the Sandiganbayan. While the justices have 10 days to determine if there is probable cause for trial and issue a warrant of arrest, the arrest warrants could take longer than 10 days, depending on how Read More …
