Mayor Duterte took time-off from campaigning to celebrate his 71st birthday privately on Monday.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The camp of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Monday expressed its gratitude after he topped the latest Social Weather Station (SWS) survey. “We are grateful that the surveys are now reflecting what we have been witnessing and experiencing on the ground,” Peter Tiu Lavina, Duterte’s spokesman, said in a statement. “The new SWS survey affirms the other surveys that have Duterte on the clear lead in the presidential race,” Lavina added. He said the informal exit polls in the overseas absentee voting also showed the overwhelming support for Duterte. “All these are the result of the campaign mounted not by just our candidate and campaign teams but most importantly by our volunteers and support groups here and abroad,” Lavina said. “We shall continue this campaign to gain even more support and be vigilant to thwart attempts to frustrate the true will of our electorate,” he added. In the SWS survey done from March 30 to April 2, Duterte overtook Sen. Grace Poe after 27 percent of respondents chose him for their bet for president. Poe, who almost consistently led previous surveys, fell to second place after getting 23 percent. (MNS)

Poe thanked her supporters and reacted to her critics after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of her presidential bid in the upcoming elections.(MNS photo) Grace Poe MANILA, Apr 12 (Mabuhay) — The camp of presidential aspirant Grace Poe strongly denied on Tuesday that she had met privately with President Benigno Aquino III supposedly to explore how they could “help each other” in the upcoming elections. Poe’s spokesman, Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian, said she continues to run as an independent candidate. “There is absolutely no truth to the reports that the President and Sen. Poe recently met privately,” Gatchalian said in a text message. “We must respect the fact that PNoy (Aquino’s nickname) has already made an endorsement this coming elections and though they remain friends, the good Senator is not that candidate,” he said. Aquino has endorsed the presidential bid of Liberal Party’s standard-bearer, former Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II. While she was appointed by Aquino as chair of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board in 2010, Poe decided to run against the President’s candidate in the upcoming May presidential race. “Senator Poe continues to run as an independent candidate. She will continue to forge forward with the message of Gobyernong may Puso. Gobyernong may Puso aims to pull out of poverty the more the 26 million Filipinos living in poverty,” Gatchalian said. “She firmly Read More …
Will Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao end his illustrious boxing career with a big bang or will he fall flat on his face in the canvas? We will know the answer this Saturday when Pacquiao and his one-time “conqueror”, Timothy Bradley, square off at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao gave assurances that he will try to end his career with a knockout win against Bradley. The boxer from Palm Springs, however, has never been stopped in all his fights since he became a professional boxer. Millions of Filipinos around the globe are expected to take time out from their usual busy schedules to watch Pacquiao, perhaps for the last time, showcase his boxing skills inside the ring for 12 rounds against Bradley. Pacquiao is expected to hang up his gloves after the fight with Bradley. This is Pacquiao’s 66th career fight since he turned pro in boxing. Out of 66 fights, Pacquiao won 57 times, 38 of them either by knockout or TKO. The boxer from the province of Sarangani has been known as an explosive fighter, capable of throwing dozens of punches in combinations from all angles. I have doubts regarding Pacquiao’s retirement announcement from boxing. I am sure that if he wins against Bradley either by knockout of TKO, he will fight again, maybe, two more before he finally hangs up his gloves for good. With all the money he has made throughout his boxing career, I see no reason for him to go back to the ring. Read More …
Coleen Garcia (MNS photo) Before becoming one of the most talked about celebrities today, Coleen Garcia had to go through a lot of hardships. In an interview, Garcia addressed misconceptions by some people that life has always been easy for her. “It’s because I’m mestiza… That’s really all it is. ‘Pag maputi ka, mayaman ka. Alam mo ‘yun?” she said, noting Filipinos’ common notion of fair-skinned people like her. She shared some of her struggles growing up, from acting as a co-parent to her two younger brothers at age nine after her parents separated, to fending for herself without a diploma or a steady job at 19 years old. Her savings from her modeling and showbiz gigs covered the rent of her apartment which, she said, had no furniture and air conditioning. So, she slept on the floor. She took a cab from Quezon City to Alabang during her hosting stints without any personal assistant, and even had a distressing experience with dubious drivers. “I said [to myself], ‘you know what, God will provide for me. God will take me wherever I’m meant to be,” she said, recalling her hardships. Three months later, Garcia became a regular host on “It’s Showtime,” and eventually entered into a relationship with co-host Billy Crawford. While she had a stable job, her name was always dragged into controversy. Fans were saying she is the reason behind the breakup of Crawford and his then girlfriend of five years, singer Nikki Gil, who is now married Read More …

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s claim that the Aquino administration is behind the plunder charges against him over his alleged involvement on the multi-billion pork barrel scam. In a statement, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr. said Marcos should just respond to the complaint in the proper forum. “Contrary to the claims of Senator Marcos, Government has no involvement in the reported case for plunder filed against him by an anti-corruption group,” Coloma said. “If the good senator strongly believes that he has nothing to do with the charges leveled against him, it is best that he respond in the proper forum,” he added. Marcos, who is running for vice president, said the Aquino administration had a hand in the plunder complaint filed against him before the Office of the Ombudsman by an anti-corruption group calling itself as iBalik ang Bilyones ng Mamayan (iBBM). Marcos said he was no longer surprised with the filing of the complaint as “the present administration has a long-standing tradition of selective justice.” “Yun na nga ang problema sa atin. Everything is all about politics. Yung justice natin nagiging pulitika na rin. Iyan naman ang ginagawa, kapag hindi ka Read More …
Members of different militant groups troop to the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Wednesday. The protesters condemned the bloody dispersal of drought-hit farmers and their supporters in Kidapawan, Cotabato province last Friday.(MNS photo) KIDAPAWAN CITY (PNA) – The Philippine National Police Region 12 (PNP–12) has relieved two of its top police officers in North Cotabato province concomitant to the controversial April 1 dispersal of thousands of protesting farmers who blockaded the segment of the Cotabato – Davao highway here to stage their plight on the harsh effects of the drought-spawned El Niño phenomenon. The protesting peasants withheld traffic flow along the highway for four days prior to the chaotic dispersal that claimed the lives of two farmers and wounding of over a hundred peasants and anti-riot cops alike. P/Sr. Supt. Danilo Peralta, administrative head of PNP – 12, confirmed Friday the relief of P/Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum as the provincial director and P/Supt. John Calinga as Kidapawan police director. The relief order stemmed from the law enforcement operation currently being investigated by the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights. Peralta stressed that such directive is a standard operating procedure to any officer that will undergo investigation. The same order stipulated that P/Supt. Jose Briones, concurrent provincial police operations chief, would seat as North Cotabato police officer-in-charge while P/Supt Noel Kinazo, provincial police office deputy chief for administration, acts as Calinga’s replacement. Both Tagum and Calinga are mandated to submit themselves to the ongoing investigation, Read More …

The protesters urged the government to uphold human rights and immediately address extra-judicial killings in the country. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte can only solve criminality in the country within six months if he would declare martial law, Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile said on Thursday. “He’s a good friend of mine, si Digong (Duterte’s nickname) and I must publicly thank him for having supported me in all my political battles,” Enrile said during a weekly forum at the Senate. “But I can’t make a promise that I’ll be able to solve criminality in such a short period unless he will mobilize the entire organization including the police and the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) and declare martial law then I believe him, if he’s going to declare martial law. My God, he’s only human being.” Enrile said he has doubts whether Duterte could fulfill this promise once he gets elected president in the upcoming May elections. “We’re talking of capability to do something. I don’t know, I don’t know his formula. That’s why I’m saying I have my doubt…pardon me for expressing my doubt but I hope he can do it,” he said. “The only thing that I can think of as a formula to really stop criminality in the country like a passing storm is to Read More …
