What an excellent year for Christmas music 2013 has turned out to be. A month ago, we got the superb Johnny Mathis singing Holiday tunes again in Sending You A Little Christmas but with a refreshing country spin. What more could you ask for after something like that? We didn’t ask but doubtless in keeping with the giving spirit of the season we still got more. And what wonderful sounds those extra presents turned out to be, A Mary Christmas by Mary J. Blige and Wrapped In Red by Kelly Clarkson. I knew that the soulful Mary was ripe for a Christmas album after listening to her sing What Child Is This with Andrea Bocelli in the Italian tenor’s My Christmas album two years ago that was produced by David Foster. It was a showstopper. I thought then that she would be magnificent doing Christmas songs. Then last year, Mary was back with another duet, We Three Kings Of Orient Are with Rod Stewart, in Merry Christmas Baby, which, was also produced by Foster. And I thought Foster has plans for Mary. Again she was great and I knew that it would not be long before we get Mary’s own and her very first Christmas album. And it did happen this year. And her A Mary Christmas was indeed produced and arranged by Foster and it is all that I expected it would be. It reminds me of a conversation I had with my mother a long time ago. I Read More …

TWO calamities derailed what was shaping up to be a very promising year for Cebu tourism. For tourism stakeholders, 2013 is a “challenging year” for the industry. Tourism advocate Jonathan Jay Aldeguer said this year had all the makings of a banner year for travel in the country until the twin disasters hit the Visayas region in the fourth quarter. Aldeguer said the year started out “very promising” with both international and domestic players taking “aggressive” moves to stimulate travel to and within the Philippines. Target figures, he said, were on track and these even exceeded domestic travel goals. But the recent calamities in Visayas, where tourism is strongest, slowed down travel to these areas. “The year 2013 was showing a lot of promise, even more than 2012, up until the multiple disasters that struck the Visayas,” said Aldeguer, who is president and chief executive officer of The Islands Group. ‘Big blow’ to sector Cenelyn Manguilimotan, president of the Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association of the Philippines (HRRAC), shared Aldeguer’s evaluation, saying that the performance of the sector “could have been better” if only the twin calamities did not happen. Manguilimotan pointed out that Cebu recorded a lot of tourism activities in the first three quarters, up until the beginning of October. After the 7.2 magnitude earthquake, hotels and other establishments started to feel the impact with cancellations and postponements of bookings, travel and events. The cancellations continued after super typhoon Yolanda, international codename Haiyan. “The recent earthquake and typhoon Read More …
MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) – The Philippine stock market inched higher today following the positive outlook on the US economy. The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index gained 0.34 percent or 19.75 points to 5,854.88, while the broader all-share index rose by 0.09 percent or 3.07 percent or 3,592.96. Trading volume reached 658 million shares worth P5.26 billion ($118.45 million) with 86 stocks declining, and 69 advancing, and 34 were unchanged. Of the six counters, only the holding firm and the services sector bucked the trend. “Attempts to move higher were felt as some investors laud the latest revision in US gross domestic product at 4.1 percent,” 2TradeAsia.com said. The 4.1 percent was the fastest since 2011 and mostly came from stronger consumer spending. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 The positive news initially kicked the Philippine equities to as high as 5,885.94 or almost a 50-point-gain but sellers were quick to cap any rally. “With the shortened trading week however plus Christmas break, some seized on rises to pocket gains while waiting for other catalysts to support sentiment,” the online brokerage said. 2TradeAsia.com advises investors to trade within range as immediate support is seen at 5,800, while resistance is set between 5,850 to 5,870. Stocks in the 30-company index closed mixed. Among those sold down were Ayala Land, Inc., SM Investments Corp., and heavyweight Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.

This should not be a forgotten crisis. That’s why I’m here,” Ban said at a joint news conference with Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario at the close of a three-day visit. Ban said so far only 32 percent of the amount requested for the UN-led humanitarian community’s Strategic Response Plan for Yolanda victims had been filled. On Saturday, Ban visited Tacloban City and saw for himself the massive devastation wrought by Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) on Nov. 8. The government said the supertyphoon affected 14.1 million persons, displaced 4.1 million, and damaged 1.1 million houses. It said 6,102 persons were killed and another 1,779 were missing. On Friday, Ban met with President Aquino and discussed with him the government’s rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. TAIPEI—A Taiwanese tourist who was kidnapped more than a month ago at a Malaysian island resort returned to Taiwan on Saturday after she was rescued in Sulu on Friday. Television footage showed Evelyn Chang, 58, dressed in a loose T-shirt and wearing sunglasses, walking to a minibus parked at an airport near Taipei after she arrived in the early afternoon, waving briefly to the media and giving a thumbs-up sign. Local media said she was expected to go to a hospital in Taipei for medical checkups later in the day. Chang was found by Philippine Marines in Sitio Kanja Amil in Liban village in Talipao, a town on the remote island of Jolo where al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf Islamic militants are known to operate, after they were tipped off by local residents, said Sulu provincial commander Col. Jose Cenabre. She was taken to a local military hospital for a medical checkup on Friday. “I think I just want to say I deeply appreciate the Philippine military for giving me such big help and assistance to rescue me. Thank you very much,” Chang said in a prerecorded message aired by several Taiwanese news channels on Saturday. Chang and her husband Hsu Li-min were on a holiday on Pom Pom Island in Sabah state, which is near the Sulu island group, when gunmen attacked on Nov. 15, kidnapping her and killing her husband, according to Taiwanese officials and media. Cenabre said Chang broke down in tears as she recounted her ordeal. She told Read More …

MANILA, Philippines – Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. said it expects lower revenues in the fourth quarter of the year due to the extensive devastation in the Visayas region brought about by Super Typhoon Yolanda. Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu said in a statement that the damage caused by the typhoon that battered the Visayas last Nov. 8 likely dampened the company’s revenue growth in the last quarter of the year. Cu said Globe expects lower revenues amid the expected surge in voice calls and short messaging system (SMS) during the holiday season as the extensive damage caused by the typhoon likely affected domestic spending in the last quarter. “Notwithstanding the usual seasonal increase in both SMS and voice traffic during the holiday season, fourth quarter revenues may not be as strong as in prior years due to softer demand for telco services in the affected areas and possible cutbacks in telco-related spending on the part of subscribers as they donate these instead to the relief and rebuilding efforts of the government and private sector,” he stressed. Cu also emphasized that the typhoon damage on the network is not expected to have long-term negative impact on revenues. According to him, the company’s restoration effort in the Visayas region is almost complete. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “As a utility company, we have made it our priority to restore mobile services in typhoon-affected areas as soon as possible,” he added. Communist rebels will declare a ceasefire during the holidays to allow their comrades to mark the 45th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines on Dec. 26. In a statement posted on its website late Tuesday, the CPP said: “The leadership… is set to declare a ceasefire in order to pave the way for the national celebrations of the [Party’s] 45th anniversary as well as to give way to the Filipino people’s traditional observance of the Christmas and New Year holidays.” But the CPP did not immediately specify the dates of the ceasefire. It also called on the government to order the Armed Forces of the Philippines to stand down on December 26 and the days leading to it, “in order to allow… thousands of people to peacefully travel to and join the celebrations.” For this year’s celebration, the CPP said it expects “several hundred” people’s assemblies inside the guerrilla zones across the country. It said most participants are likely to travel by foot to the people’s assemblies. “Travel arrangements are also being made for the revolutionary forces and guests coming in from the cities or other towns,” it added. Also, the CPP said the celebrations will be modest. On the other hand, the CPP said the mass activities will also collect funds and materials that will be contributed to the rehabilitation efforts in areas devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). “The assemblies shall, however, be appropriately joyous to celebrate the great victories of the people’s war and the people’s Read More …
STORES that are caught overpricing “Noche Buena” products will be penalized in accordance with the Fair Trade law, an official of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Monday. Almer Massilones, chief of consumer welfare of the DTI in Misamis Oriental (DTI-MisOr), said the penalties will be based on the revised schedule of penalty under the Fair Trade law. As to the exact amount of the penalties of overpricing Noche Buena products, Massillones said it will be based on Department Administrative Order No. 06, series of 2007 (DAO 06-2007). DAO 06-2007 is also known as the “Revised Schedule of Administrative Fines for Violations of the Consumer Act of the Philippines and some Trade and Industry Laws.” The said order also covers Republic Act (R.A.) No. 7581 or the Price Act, R.A. No. 71 or the Price Tag Law, among others. Based on DAO 06-2007, the fines imposed for violating the Consumer Act of the Philippines depends on the capitalization. Fines If the capitalization is below P20,000 the corresponding fines range from P500 to P1,500. But if it is above P200,000 the range would be from P30,000 to P50,000. Eliza Pabillore, DTI-Misamis Oriental provincial director, said that based on their monitoring there are stores which are not following the standard retail price, thus, a “show cost” order will be issued to them. Show cost orders are given to retailers to give them a chance to explain the price increase. “If there is no sufficient cause for the increase on the Read More …
