Record-setting take for Metro filmfest

MANILA, Philippines – As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the box office gross of the eight official entries in the 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) was almost P140 million, outgrossing by around P12 million last year’s first-day take of P128 million. This was announced by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino in a radio interview. The ranking is expected to change dramatically after the Gabi ng Parangal Awards night tomorrow, Dec. 27, although the Top Five might be only slightly affected.

‘Economic fundamentals remain solid’

MANILA, Philippines – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said the country’s economic fundamentals remain solid despite external risks and challenges.  “The domestic economy continues to expand above historical average. Household consumption is expected to remain steady and growth in services sustained,” the central bank said in its latest Report on Economic and Financial Developments.  “The favorable trends in the manufacturing sector indicate the potential resurgence of the industry sector, which can potentially transform the sector into a major driver of growth in the Philippines,” the BSP said. Philippine economic growth slowed to 5.3 percent in the third quarter from six percent in the second quarter. This brought the nine-month expansion to 5.8 percent, way below the 6.5- to 7.5-percent target for the full year.  “The near to medium-term economic outlook remains uncertain, with risks largely external,” the central bank said as growth in different economies and markets remain uneven. Recovery in the US and the slower but still strong performance of emerging Asia countries have driven global growth, the BSP said. However, it said dim prospects in the euro area, Japan, and emerging markets in Latin America and the Middle East continue to weigh down global economic  output. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1  “Second, the uncertainty surrounding the timing of the US Federal Reserve’s shift towards monetary policy normalization indicates that capital flow volatility could materialize anew, which could affect financial markets,” the central bank said. LP leaders not giving up on Mar Roxas

Ranking officials of the Liberal Party continue to keep their faith in Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II even though he continues to lag behind in voter preference surveys. House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, LP’s vice chairman, said Roxas’ surge in the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey can only bode well for his presidential bid in 2016. “I think he will prevail once the public realizes the gravity of the issues,” he said in a text message Wednesday. The SWS survey, conducted from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, placed Roxas among the top three contenders respondents most favored to succeed President Benigno Aquino III. Binay remained the frontrunner in the SWS poll, with 37 percent of the respondents naming him as the best leader to succeed Aquino. Sen. Grace Poe placed second with 21 percent while Roxas was in third place with 19 percent. LP Secretary General Western Samar Rep. Mel Senen Sarmiento also expressed optimism Roxas’ numbers will climb further if he decides to formally throw his hat into the presidential race. “Mar has the track record and integrity to ensure continuity of what PNoy has started. The truth about his person will contribute to this (ratings climb) because people will eventually see his sincerity, dedication and passion to serve the Filipino people,” he told GMA News Online in a separate text message. Consensus among LP members Roxas has yet to formally announce his political plans for 2016 although he has long been perceived as LP’s standard bearer.  Caloocan Read More …

Pilipinas queens: Beauty need not be skin-deep MANILA, Philippines—Travelers may find themselves paying for cheaper airline tickets next year as the government is moving forward with an unprecedented plan to “scrap” fuel surcharges, saying these are no longer required because oil prices are falling globally. Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) executive director Carmelo Arcilla confirmed in an interview on Tuesday a decision to remove the surcharge on fuel for “all international and domestic airlines with operations in the Philippines, effective immediately.” Arcilla said the exact timing would depend on when a final resolution is signed but he said the removal of the surcharge could take place in early 2015. The move would result in lower ticket prices as the fuel surcharge can run into the hundreds of US dollars for long-haul international flights. Brent crude oil has declined over 46 percent since June and expectations were for this slump to continue, reports overseas showed. “This surcharge is imposed by airlines to cover volatile price Read More …

Christmas with Libera

A Filipino, former Finance Secretary Roberto de Leon, had a hand in making Angels Sing Christmas in Ireland (Libera’s first live recording after several years) possible The Christmas celebration makes us think of heaven. In heaven, there are angels. And angels, as mankind has believed through the ages, sing. Maybe when they do, they sound like the heavenly voices of Libera. This is why the boy group from the UK now plays a major part in the holidays in many parts of the world. When people want to think of the beauty of heaven and the glorious sound of angels on Christmas, they listen to the music of Libera. It is no wonder that they named Libera’s latest album Angels Sing Christmas in Ireland. This is the group’s first live recording after several years and it happened at the beautiful St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh in Ireland. The acoustics are superb and I think no venue could have been more fitting for this production. As the beautiful voices rise in song, each selection becomes a heartfelt prayer soaring up to heaven. What makes the album more remarkable is the fact that a Filipino had a hand in making it possible. Former Finance Secretary Roberto “Bobby” de Ocampo, chairman and CEO of the Philippine Veterans Bank, is the associate producer of Christmas In Ireland. He had also been involved in previous Libera albums. He was, in fact, responsible for the group’s landmark recording of the Filipino carol, Himig Pasko, in Libera’s Read More …

Toral: Philippine e-commerce roadmap

WHEN the e-commerce Law was first pushed in the late 1990s, the battle cry then was that e-commerce can level the playing field for small businesses. Almost 20 years later, the bigger an organization is, the more likely it is to embrace e-commerce. However, majority in the business community still has not embrace it – from doing corporate purchases, receiving sales and making online payments to suppliers. Some people in business do not recognize that they are doing e-commerce at all. This is especially true for those who define e-commerce in a limited manner – only when there is online payment via credit card. The creation of a country’s e-commerce roadmap as being worked on by the Department of Trade and Industry (pursuing its mandate under the E-Commerce Law or Republic Act 8792) should look at e-commerce not only from its various functions in the business supply chain, but also in encouraging the adoption in various industries from government, manufacturing, retail, services, telecommunication, and many more. When looked at and embraced as a whole, we can make strides in measuring its impact in our economy – in our country’s gross domestic product, among others. Last week, I made an appeal for the creation of a national privacy commission and the release of guidelines for data privacy in government and private sector. It is also important to monitor E-Government Fund-supported projects. The Bureau of Internal Revenue is currently in talks with three service providers that will release an electronic official receipt Read More …

ADB further trims 2014 PHL growth estimates on weak gov’t spending

The Philippine central bank said remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have allowed households to save money, boosting the country’s savings rate.(MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has further lowered the growth outlook for the Philippines this year while downgrading economic forecast in most Southeast Asian countries, saying the momentum has slowed down. In a supplement to its Asian Development Outlook 2014 Update released Wednesday, the Manila-based lender trimmed its growth estimates for the Philippine gross domestic product (GDP) to 6 percent in 2014 from 6.2 percent it announced in September. The Philippine economy grew by 6.1 percent in the first half but the growth pace fell back to 5.3 percent in the third quarter, making it the fourth fastest growing economy in Asia. This brought the GDP in the first nine months of the year to 5.8 percent. “Robust private consumption and higher private investment and net exports were insufficient to balance unexpectedly weak public spending,” ADB said in the report. Of the six countries monitored by ADB, Malaysia was the only country with an outlook maintained for 2014, a situation that helped bring down growth estimates for the subregion. In the latest update, Southeast Asia’s aggregate GDP is expected to expand by 4.4 percent in 2014 and 5.1 percent in 2015, compared with 4.6 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively, in previous estimates.
