1986 People Power participants recall the day that ended the Marcos regime

Memories of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolt are vivid in the memory of 58-year-old church volunteer Leo Mabansag.  He recalls telling his girlfriend back then that he will join the mass revolt to topple authoritarian regime of then President Ferdinand Marcos. “It’s still fresh to me, nandun sa lahat ng mga taong present yung emotions of fear at the same time yung excitement. Nasa gitna ka ng EDSA mismo, ang dami ninyo. Halos hindi ka makagalaw sa dami ng tao pero maayos,” Mabansag said to GMA News Online. Unknown to him, his girlfriend also went to EDSA to join the protesters. “I didn’t know that she went there also. Hindi kami nagkita dun pero nung  nagkwentuhan kami a few days after the event, dun namin nalaman na pareho pala kaming nagpunta,” Mabansag said. That same year of 1986, Mabansag, then a 28-year-old former seminarian, married his girlfriend. The couple was blessed with two children. Twenty-nine years after, Mabansag went back to EDSA Shrine – not to call for the resignation of any government leaders but just to offer a prayer and to remember those days. But Mabansag was quite surprised and a bit disappointed. When he arrived at EDSA Shrine to attend a Mass Wednesday morning, only a few people were there, mostly security personnel. It was then that he found out that the Mass usually held at the EDSA Shrine stage was now inside the EDSA Shrine chapel also known as the Mary Queen of Peace church, where Read More …

Ex-intel officer stumped by number of commandos in Mamasapano

A former intelligence officer of the Philippine military is wondering why there were so many policemen involved in the January 25 operation of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao.  In a phone interview, retired Navy commodore Rex Robles pointed out that troop movement of that size could easily catch the attention of the residents. “What were those people doing there? Those 300 or so?… Let’s say if you move 50 men in an enemy’s territrory, diba ang danger of detection is very high?… What were these men supposed to do according to operations order? ” Robles told GMA News Online.  The PNP also previously said that 392 SAF commandos were part of the operation to arrest Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan. Only 74 clashed with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front,  Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and private armed groups. “Ano ba ang scenario na prinoject nila para magkaroon sila ng ganoon karaming tao?” Robles further asked.  He also explained that the SAF needed at least 10 trucks to bring the police officers to the highway, “Let’s say 30 (people) per truck. You need 10 trucks to bring those people. Sampung truck na nagtatravel, hindi pa sila madedetect?”  He also said that for that kind of operation like Oplan Exodus, three teams of around 100 men are only needed to avoid unwanted attention.  “Troop movements of this size will have to pass through Army check points. The fact should have been reported to GHQ (general Read More …

Who's the PNP-SAF’s third high-value target in Mamasapano?

The Philippine National Police-Special Action Force was not only after Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir alias Marwan and Filipino bomb maker Basit Usman when it carried out Oplan Exodus in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao on Jan. 25. They were also after a third target: Malaysian bomb maker Amin Baco alias Jihad.  The third target was mentioned in the exchange of text messages between President Benigno Aquino III and resigned PNP chief Dir. Gen. Alan Purisima.  When Purisima told Aquino about SAF’s status in Mamasapano, the President replied, “Are they still in contact with the two other targets? If not and the opposing force has escaped, are we now back in square one?”  Oplan Exodus included a profile or a target analysis of Baco. It said that he was also an expert bomb-maker and a member of Southeast Asian militant terrorist organization Jemaah Islamiyah. He was wanted for kidnapping two people in Sabah, Malaysia.  Security expert Rommel Banlaoi also explained that in the organizational structure of Mindanao-based terrorist group Khilafa Islamiya, Usman is under Marwan, leading a group in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Maguindanao. Meanwhile, Baco is also under Marwan, leading a group in Metro Manila.    Retaliation Former PNP intelligence officer retired Chief Supt. Rodolfo “Boogie” Mendoza also revealed that he once received reports that Baco was in Manila last year.  “Itong si Amin Baco kasi meron nga tayong na-monitor last year na nandito ‘yan. Siyempre cause for concern ‘yan kasi hindi naman natin alam kung ano ang misyon Read More …

‘Top Sulu politicians’ behind Vietnam rice smuggle try—BOC chief

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Customs Deputy Commissioner Jessie Dellosa said “top Sulu politicians” were behind the attempt to smuggle Vietnam rice — which authorities seized Monday — to Western Mindanao. “Top Sulu politicians owned the smuggled rice,” Dellosa said Tuesday. Pressed for more details, he said: “Not now, just top Sulu politicians.” On Monday, authorities – including the Philippine Navy – intercepted five vessels (not four as earlier reported) off Pata Island in Sulu around 3:25 a.m. Initially, Rear Admiral Reynaldo Yoma, commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao told the Philippine Daily Inquirer there were more or less 130,000 sacks of rice seized from the vessels by elements of the Navy’s PG 388 and PG 387 under Lt. Commander Richard Rosales and elements of the 64th Marines Company under 1Lt. Leonelle Marvin Mapalo. Among the seized vessels was the Vietnam-registered M/V An Bien-89-ALCI and its 16 crew under Captain Nguyen Van Loi had been taken into custody. Seized from the foreign vessel were 116,000 sacks of imported rice – out of its original cargo of 152,000 sacks – consigned to an Alfarsi Tan Hasiman of Jolo, Sulu. Reports from the ground units revealed that the foreign cargo vessel arrived on Thursday (February 19) from Mythoi Port in Vietnam with 152,000 sacks of cargo. It started to unload its cargo on February 20 off Pata Island to local vessels that transported the contraband to various Mindanao areas. Aside from the Vietnam registered ship, four more local vessels were also seized Read More …

St. Paul’s ties that bind

St. Paul College, Quezon City Class of 1965’s reunion. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The members of High School Class 1965 of St. Paul College Quezon City could hardly believe it. “What? It’s going to be 50 years since we graduated from high school!! You’re kidding!!” Well, part of it was denial that we’re that much older. Another part of it, or I’d like to think a large part of it, was because we had been regularly bonding with each other, enjoying each other’s company, and sharing each other’s joys and sorrows for years so that it was almost like it was just a short while ago that we left SPCQ and went on to college and beyond. Yes, despite the inevitable number of classmates who had somehow disappeared from the radar, there was still a group that managed to stay in touch. Here in Metro Manila, the “locals” would meet to mark the usual milestones — Christmas, birthdays, and visits from balikbayan classmates. The same applied for classmates living abroad, mostly in the US. What’s more, we didn’t allow geographical barriers to deter us — there would be some reunions where the “locals” would fly to the US to be with both the East and West Coast classmates. It was no wonder then, that we all looked forward to celebrating our golden jubilee. In the course of monthly meetings, countless email traffic, plus Facebook, Skype, Facetime and Viber tete-a-tetes, our vague ideas turned into semi-coherent plans, then our plans began to take Read More …

Napeñas admits US hand in intelligence sharing during Mamasapano operation

Relieved SAF chief Getulio Napeñas. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — The United States indeed helped the Philippines in terms of intelligence sharing during the Mamasapano operation but not in actual combat operations, relieved Philippine National Police-Special Action Force head Director Getulio Napeñas told a Senate hearing on Tuesday. It was Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto who again brought up during the Senate hearing on incident the issue about the alleged US’ involvement in the operation, citing among others, the Google Maps and US drones that were allegedly used to guide the SAF troopers to locate Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias “Marwan.” “Merong eropanong lumilipad na nagbibigay sa inyo ng aerial view sa command center n’yo that there are American operatives also in their command center na napanaoood n’yo in real time. ‘Yung 84th SAF habang binaril si Marwan, habang kinukuha n’yo ‘yung 84th SAF napapanood n’yo in real time e,” Recto said. (There was a drone which gave you an aerial view in your command center that there were also American operatives also in their command center whom could also see real time. You could also see in real time while Marwan was being shot and while 84th SAF men were being extracted.) “Tumulong ‘yung US counterpart dun sa intelligence but the details of intelligence sharing ay madi-discuss po ‘yan ni Senior Supt. Mendez,” Napeñas said, referring to PNP Intelligence Group Director Fernando Mendez. (Our US counterpart helped in the intelligence gathering, but the details of intelligence sharing will be discussed by Senior Supt. Mendez.) “Meron kaming isang US counterpart du’n sa Seaborn who’s working with them in terms of training…Kasama po na ibinibigay nila ‘yung Read More …

Hon. Consul General Audie de Castro opens the UniPro San Diego launch. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO SAN DIEGO, California – More than 50 members of the Filipino community here on February 6 welcomed the new San Diego chapter of the New York City-based Pilipino American Unity for Progress (UniPro). The gathering at the United Domestic Workers of America (UDW) Community Hall was co-sponsored by UDW, National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) and Silayan Filipina. Consul General Audie de Castro urged the audience to strive for unity and to promote Filipino American interests in San Diego. “In the past couple of years, our community has worked together better than ever.  A major reason is that I have seen many of you reach out to all generations and to others with different political views.  This is the best time for UniPro to be created in San Diego.
