UNA not longer looking at surveys for VP Binay’s vindication—Tiangco

The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has ceased looking at surveys as a source of vindication for its presumptive standard bearer, Vice President Jejomar Binsay, amid the corruption controversies that have been hounding him in recent months. In a phone interview Tuesday, UNA interim president and Navotas City Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco said Binay will remain focused on his job of providing affordable housing for Filipino familieis and attending to the concerns of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) regardless of his standing in voter preference surveys. The latest Social Weather Station (SWS) survey published Monday in Business World showed Binay remained the top contender for the president, with 37 percent of the respondents saying he should succeed President Benigno Aquino III in 2016. The poll, which was taken from November 27 to December 1, asked respondents, “Who do you think are the good leaders who should succeed Pres. [Benigno III] Aquino as president? You may give up to three names.” Next to Binay, 21 percent believe Senator Grace Poe should be the next president while 19 percent named Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, the Liberal Party’s (LP) presumptive standard-bearer. When asked if the survey results is a vindication for Binay, Tiangco said: “We’ve stopped looking at it that way. Basta si VP Binay, focused sa kanyang trabaho no matter what his ratings are.” Binay has been hounded by allegations he was involved in the alleged overpricing of certain government projects when he was Makati City mayor, and of keeping secret bank accounts and Read More …

Bilibid inmates’ transfer to NBI is legal, says DOJ Sec. de Lima

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Tuesday said on Tuesday there is nothing illegal in the transfer of 19 inmates from the New Bilibid Prisons to the National Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Manila. De Lima issued the statement following the filing of separate petitions by three of the 19 transfered inmates, who claimed their constitutional right to security were violated when they were taken out of the national penitentiary. De Lima acknowledged that the transfered inmates have rights but they are limited rights. “Inmates are called persons deprived of liberty…. by virtue of their conviction,” she said. De Lima said the transfer of the inmates has “enough (legal) basis,” adding that the situation was considered “exceptional” because it involved “identified high-risk and high-value inmates.” “May pagka-emergency situation pa nga because all those information and reports include intelligence reports that we have been receiving the past months. So we really need to take a decisive action to remedy the situation,” said De Lima. De Lima stressed that personnel from the DOJ, the BuCor and the NBI are all aware of their mandate, especially under the BuCor Modernization Law. “How can that (transfer to NBI) be illegal when the administration of the correctional systen is under the Department of Justice,” said De Lima. As part of its safekeeping and reformative programs for the inmates, the BuCor ensures that inmates are “completely incapacitated” from committing further criminal activities and to totally “cut them off from their criminal network.” De Lima also said Read More …

Cops back from Liberia Ebola-free honored

MANILA, Philippines—Five policemen belonging to the 29-man Philippine National Police (PNP) delegation to the peacekeeping mission in Liberia last year were honored on Monday for their dedication to their mission in the face of the deadly Ebola outbreak. The policemen, the last to complete the 21-day quarantine at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center, received letters of commendation, United Nations service medals and “Medalya ng Papuri” for their sacrifice and courage. PNP officer in charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina, who arrived from Liberia early this month, led the awarding ceremony. The awardees were Senior Supt. Cesar Binag, deputy commissioner of the United Nations Mission in Liberia; Supt. Eduardo Abaday, Supt. Nixon Cayaban, Chief Insp. Emmanuel Caquilala and SPO3 Khynnimer Absari. The Philippines sent 133 peacekeepers from the AFP and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to Liberia. They were repatriated ahead of schedule following the Ebola virus outbreak in the West African nation. The first batch of 24 peacekeepers arrived in November and was quarantined for 21 days on Caballo Island on Manila Bay. They were honored by the PNP earlier this month. “These police peacekeepers are the new heroes of the country for their sacrifice and dedication,” Espina said. The PNP has been sending contingents to UN peacekeeping missions since 1992, first in Cambodia, and then to other countries also torn by conflict. Prosecutors want judge off Laude case

AP FILE PHOTO OLONGAPO CITY, Philippines—The city’s prosecutors on Monday asked the judge hearing the murder case against US Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton to inhibit herself because of her association with the serviceman’s lawyer. Judge Roline Ginez-Jabalde of Regional Trial Court Branch 74 here was a classmate of Pemberton’s lawyer, Rowena Garcia-Flores, at the San Beda College of Law, said lawyer Virgie Suarez, one of the counsels of the family of slain transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude. The prosecutors’ manifestation would be filed on Jan. 5 but Suarez disclosed it at a news conference after Jabalde addressed a petition filed by Pemberton’s lawyers to set aside and dismiss the murder charge. Lawyer Gerry Gruspe, RTC Branch 74 clerk of court, said Jabalde may resolve Pemberton’s petition to review the case on Tuesday. Laude’s lawyers said that asking Jabalde’s inhibition from the case would be another matter for the court to address as the government starts the countdown to the year to resolve the case as required by the Visiting Forces Agreement. Suarez said the one-year prescription started on Dec. 15, the day Olongapo City Prosecutor Emilie Fe de los Santos formally charged Pemberton with Laude’s murder. “It is the judge ultimately who will decide whether or not she will inhibit [herself from the case],” said lawyer Harry Roque, the Laude family’s chief counsel. Both Roque and Suarez said they had no preference as to the judge who would handle the case since, they noted, the state had overwhelming evidence that Pemberton Read More …

Aiza with Liza: More at peace

Newlyweds Liza Diño and Aiza Seguerra.THEPROUDRAD.COM PHOTO DALY CITY, California — Former child star and singer-songwriter Aiza Seguerra was in town for a weekend to do a show at Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks, California. But on December 8, many were surprised to learn Aiza and girlfriend Liza Diño had tied the knot in Ben Lomond, a 90-minute drive from San Francisco. The intimate ceremony was reminiscent of the “Twilight” wedding with the Stones and Flowers Barn venue surrounded by redwoods. “Getting married is settling down but that’s not us,” Aiza told Manila Mail in a brief interview before boarding the couple’s return flight to Manila. “It’s enjoying life more now with the person I love, everything that we do now is going to be better because we are doing it together.” Aiza, who identifies himself as a transgender man, was not feeling well during the interview. He spoke in a hoarse voice, the reason he couldn’t perform a song for Liza’s march during their wedding. “But the wedding went on beautifully,” said Emma Calayan, owner of the Calayan Skin Care Aesthetics in Tracy, California and a close friend of Aiza who helped the couple prepare for the wedding. “Everyone had a great time.” About 65 people attended the ceremony. “Mostly special friends, family and people we really care about,” she said. “We didn’t want a big ceremony because mas masaya pag intimate lang (we find it more meaningful when it’s intimate).” Emma said the venue had been chosen Read More …

Cardinal Tagle: Be one with the poor this Christmas

The coming Christmas should give Filipinos the strength to uphold the poor by fighting evils such as child abuse, trafficking and new forms of slavery, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said Monday. In his Christmas message, Tagle said Christmas was also a time to shed illusions of grandeur, pretensions to self-importance, and the wickedness of self-interest. “Christmas is never truly Christmas if we do not practice Jesus’ solidarity with the poor, the weak, and the neglected. Christmas is a season to see our own poverty, to see a companion in every person who suffers and to see Jesus in a needy brother or sister,” he said. Also, Tagle said Christmas frees the poor from inhumanity and degradation, and proclaims the good news that the poor are loved by God. He added the poor also possess the dignity sourced in God, and they could take their rightful place in shaping society as protagonists. “May Christmas 2014 give us greater zeal to combat trafficking in human persons, new forms of slavery, neglect and abuse of children and violence against the helpless!” he said. Year of the Poor, papal visit For the Philippine Church, Tagle said November 2014 to November 2015 had been designated as the Year of the Poor. Thus, he said Christmas 2014 fell within this most important event centered on the poor of the land and of the world. He added that Jesus Christ, even if he was the Son of God, emptied himself of his glory and prerogatives Read More …

NLEX asks motorists: Bring exact change for toll

With the holiday exodus expected to peak this week, the North Luzon Expressway advised motorists on Monday to bring exact change for their toll. NLEX spokesman Francisco Dagohoy said having the exact change ready will save time while in the queue and help ease the expected traffic flow from Metro Manila to the provinces. Traffic started to build up in parts of NLEX starting last weekend, as Filipinos started the yearly trip to the provinces to spend the holidays with loved ones.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
