DFA: West PHL Sea arbitration about rights, not ‘who owns what’

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) arbitration case against China is “not about who owns what” but rather to make clear the entitlements due the Philippines, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Saturday. “It is not about determining who owns what in the territories in the South China Sea. That is not our case. Our case is a interpretation of the law, clarification, and validation… Our aim is for the tribunal to say that the nine-dash line is without basis under UNCLOS,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a forum at the University of the Philippines. He added that given that China has said it will not take part in the arbitration proceedings, it will take the tribunal less time to render a decision. Jose said the tribunal might call a hearing after December 15, the deadline given China to respond to the Philippines’ case. “The Tribunal will determine the further course of the proceedings, including the need for, and scheduling of any other written submissions and hearings, at an appropriate later stage,” the DFA had said in a July 2014 newsletter on developments in the arbitration case. Assistant Secretary Jose said that in that possible hearing after December 15, the five-member tribunal may ask the Philippines about details of its claim and other matters for clarification. DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario said on June 17 that with China opting out of the proceedings, “perhaps we could get a quicker resolution from the Read More …

Private prosecutor in Corona trial is new Comelec commissioner

Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes said on Saturday that lawyer Arthur Lim, one of the prosecutors in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, has been appointed the poll body’s newest commissioner. “We got his appointment papers yesterday (Friday). He has also taken his oath already. I think he will be coming to the Comelec on Monday,” Brillantes said in a phone interview. Brillantes said Lim, whose term runs until February 2, 2018, can help the Comelec resolve election cases since he is a former president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. “Once you become president of the IBP, it means you are a very good lawyer,” Brillantes said. Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez has filed House Resolution 1304 to commend the Iglesia ni Cristo for constructing the Philippine Arena, which is said to be the largest indoor arena in the world. According to a “24 Oras” report aired Saturday evening, Benitez said the world-class arena, which has a minimum capacity of 55,000, “will have socio-economic impact” in terms of tourism, jobs, youth development, and sports “as it will open possibilities of hosting bigger sports tournaments and international events.” Construction of the arena cost an estimated P7.8 billion and was paid for with donations from Iglesia ni Cristo members. The arena is not for the exclusive use of INC, but the church “[reserves] the right to determine what kinds of activities will be held here based on wholesome Christian principles and values that our church upholds.” — JDS, GMA News

Xyza Bacani’s HK journey passed through SF

Xyza Bacani CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Documentary photographer Rick Rocamora doesn’t not even know how to pronounce her name. In fact, he and Xyza Bacani have yet to meet face-to-face, even though they’ve become key players in an inspiring story about Filipino photography that’s been drawing attention worldwide. Like many things nowadays, it began on Facebook. Rocamora, who is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, was surfing the site when he found on a photography group’s page compelling pictures of street life in Hong Kong. He assumed at first that they had been taken by some rich Filipino kids based in Hong Kong. “Akala ko anak ng mayaman na nakatira sa Hong Kong na kuha lang ng kuha,” he told me. But when he reached Xyza via email, she initially gave vague answers on what she was doing in Hong Kong. She told him she was a “mentor.” Only later did she become comfortable enough to disclose that she was a domestic helper working for an affluent Chinese family. Rick understood her reluctance to be more open at first. “She didn’t know me.” Then there’s the stigma around being a domestic helper in a city like Hong Kong. But the fact that she was DH made her work even more impressive to Rick. She immediately reminded her of Vivian Maier, the celebrated American photographer who worked as a nanny in Chicago and whose photos of that city, Los Angeles and New York later won critical acclaim. It was Rocamora who led Read More …

Protesters slam China’s bullying in disputed sea

Associated Press 6:27 am | Friday, July 25th, 2014 FROM PH WITH LOVE Protesters wave mock missiles before the Chinese Consulate in Makati City during simultaneous protests on Thursday at Chinese embassies and consular offices around the world. The demonstrators denounce China’s “bullying” of their neighbor-claimants, including the Philippines, of the disputed islands in the South China Sea. JOAN BONDOC MANILA, Philippines–About 100 Filipinos carrying mock missiles marched Thursday to the Chinese Consulate in Makati City to protest China’s actions in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea. Carrying placards that read “Our Soil, Our Oil” and carton missiles stamped “From Philippines with Love,” the activists said similar protests were being held in front of Chinese embassies and consulates abroad. “This protest rally is just the start of something much bigger not only in the Philippines but worldwide in order to tell the world what is happening in our backyard—the bullying that’s being done by our big neighbor,” said former National Security Adviser Roilo Golez, one of the rally leaders. Former Interior Secretary Rafael Alunan III criticized China’s “belligerent and blatant disregard of international laws” and urged Beijing “to respect the rule of law and be a good neighbor.” The Philippines and Vietnam are embroiled in territorial rows with China over the South China Sea, where China claims most of the heavily traveled waterway and barren islands, reefs and atolls that are believed to be atop oil and natural gas deposits. Fil-Ams start first low-cost, multi-app funding platform for nonprofits

Flipcause co-founder Derrick Cagaanan CONTRIBUTED PHOTO SAN FRANCISCO – Online giving rose by 13 percent and continues to grow, a study revealed, which probably explains the recent proliferation of nonprofits. “There are 1.8 million nonprofits out there, and 30,000 organizations get nonprofit status every year,” reports Flipcause Co-founder and Community Director Derrick Cagaanan. Most nonprofits, he says, are small organizations with small operating budgets of $1 million. This is not a lot of money. And in the nonprofit space, the cost of doing good in the community is expensive. The technical tools for non-profit fundraising already exist online. “But they’re all over the place,” says Cagaanan. “(Although) the tools for donation collection, processing benefit ticket sales and database management for volunteer information in one form or another are there,” he explained. That’s where Flipcause can make the difference, according to Cagaanan. “For the first time in nonprofit industry, we are providing all this tech in a simple, easy to use platform that can be deployed within minutes on any nonprofit website,” Cagaanan says. Nonprofits don’t have to build it themselves. Flipcause doesn’t have to come to their sites and start ripping apart layers of codes. “We install our platform at the back end of their website and, instantly, they can recruit volunteers, sell tickets and take in donations,” explains Cagaanan. In the early 1990s, charities and various causes solicited with chain letters and petitions by e-mail. When web tools came out, it wasn’t long until influence marketing became a buzzword, Read More …
