Comelec may hold biometric registration for senior citizens, PWDs at malls

The Commission on Elections is looking at conducting biometric registration at select malls to make it easier for senior citizens and persons with disabilities to register for the 2016 elections. “Currently, voter’s registration and validation for senior citizens and PWDs are done in Comelec offices but we have received many requests that the voter registration be also conducted in malls, especially in SM, for convenience and that is what we are looking at,” poll commissioner Grace Padaca said in a statement. She said the Comelec hopes to register at least a million senior citizens and PWDs. Padaca said the commission is still waiting to see how well senior citizen and PWD registration is going, but added “many PWDs and senior citizens would prefer it at SM malls because of accessibility.” The Comelec is currently conducting a nationwide registration of voters for the 2016 elections until October 31, 2015. — JDS, GMA News

CBCP head pushes rosary campaign for conversion of pork barrel scam ‘culprits’

The head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines on Saturday urged Filipino faithful to pray an extra rosary from May 31 to August 15 for the “conversion” of personalities involved in the P10-billion pork barrel scam. CBCP president and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas also encouraged youths to receive communion frequently during these days to “offer prayers for the culprits.” “I request all our Catholic faithful to pray an extra rosary from May 31, Feast of the Visitation until August 15, Solemnity of the Assumption, and offer it for the conversion of the culprits in the pork barrel scam, for the courage of the witnesses and the healing of our country,” Villegas said on his Facebook page Saturday morning. He also said the youth and children should receive Holy Communion frequently during these days of prayer. They should likewise “offer prayers for the culprits, the witnesses and our government,” he added. “Let us overcome evil by the power of good,” Villegas said. A rosary, which recalls events in the lives of Jesus Christ and his mother Mary, involves meditating on five Mysteries. Praying the rosary usually includes sets of one Lord’s Prayer, 10 Hail Marys, and a Glory Be. The multibillion-peso pork barrel scam involved channeling some lawmakers Priority Development Assistance Fund allocations to fake nongovernment organizations allegedly created by trader Janet Napoles. Lawmakers in the scam would reportedly get kickbacks. So far, at least three senators face plunder charges for the scam – minority leader Juan Ponce Enrile, Read More …

Korina’s Statement

The Inquirer report, which came out Sunday, listed names of media personalities, including Korina Sanchez of ABS-CBN, who allegedly received payoffs from detained businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, tagged as the scam’s mastermind. It said Pacheco received P715,000 from Napoles from 2004 to 2008. I only met Ms Janet Napoles and her family in late 2013 after having been assigned to interview the Napoles Family after the news had broken out about the alleged PDAF scam. I had never met Ms Napoles nor had any associations with her, her family, her employees or associates before then, nor after my interview with her and her family. I am astounded to learn that I was supposed to have received a birthday gift from her one-time 10 years ago in 2004. This never happened. I did not receive any such gift, in cash or kind, from Ms. Napoles or her company nor through emissaries then and up to now. I am dismayed that an unsubstantiated lie such as this should be given as much attention. Because how do you prove a negative? I know a Mon Arroyo who is an ex husband of a high school classmate but I have not seen nor spoken nor heard of this person since he and my friend separated more than 10 years ago. But since his name is mentioned I have asked my friend to obtain from her long estranged husband a statement regarding his alleged involvement in this matter.

Philhealth urges private hospitals to continue honoring medical benefits, denies ‘mismanagement’

Philhealth says its 600 members nationwide may stop honoring Philhealth benefits because of the delayed release of reimbursements for services rendered but assures that all regional offices have made a commitment to pay claims of all providers faster than the 60 days processing time as mandated by law. Photo: Russell Delvo/Gensan Info Office MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. on Tuesday called on private hospitals to continue honoring the benefits of their patients and warned that not doing so “constitutes a violation of their Performance Commitment.” Reacting to an earlier report quoting the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. as saying its 600 members nationwide may stop honoring Philhealth benefits because of the delayed release of reimbursements for services rendered, Philhealth president and CEO Alexander Padilla assured that, “All our regional offices have made a commitment to pay claims of all our providers faster than the 60 days processing time as mandated by law.” At the same time, he also denied PHAPI president Dr. Rustico Jimenez’s earlier contention blaming “mismanagement” for the delay in the reimbursements. “PhilHealth is mismanaged and they have the guts to give big bonuses to themselves while they cannot pay us,” Jimenez said. “We want to make it clear that the perceived delays in the payment of claims of PHAPI member-hospitals are not due to ‘possible mismanagement at PhilHealth’. Since we implemented the case-based payment system Read More …
