Palace to Lani: PNoy will deliver SONA even without you

President Benigno Aquino III will push through with his State of the Nation Address (SONA) even with the absence of some personalities, including Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado. Mercado, the wife of Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr., said over the weekened that she would skip the SONA because she expected the President to crow about her husband’s arrest and detention over the P10-billion pork barrel scam. Revilla is facing graft and plunder charges before the anti-graft court in connection with the multibillion-peso scam. “It is a constitutionally mandated event and the President will deliver his State of the Nation Address regardless of reactions of some public officials who seemed to have been affected by the PDAF scam. That is a constitutional mandated event that the President is obligated to deliver,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a news conference. Lacierda, nonetheless, said Mercado was well within her rights not to attend the SONA. “I think it’s… the right of every person, of every representative or senator to opt to attend or not,” Lacierda said. The Palace official, however, said he didn’t know what the contents of this year’s SONA woud be. “Hindi pa [namin] napag-uusapan yan… [and] the speechwriters have not met with the President on the SONA,” Lacierda said. Mercado said this would be the second time she would skip Aquino’s SONA, which is scheduled July 28 at the House of Representatives’ complex in Quezon City. Palace denies systematic plan to bring down opposition

Malacañang on Monday belied Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada’s claim that there is a “systematic plan” to bring down the opposition following the issuance of arrest orders on two senators considered critics of the administration. “We can also assure Mayor Estrada that the perception that [they] have is entirely inaccurate. There is no systematic plan [against the administration],” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said during a press conference. “What we have, however, is a plan to bring to court those who have been found to have misused their PDAF… and that would involve and affect anyone who… have misused their funds whether you are friend or foe,” he added. Estrada has accused the Aquino administration of going after opposition personalities one by one after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant of arrest against his son, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, in connection with the alleged P10-billion peso pork barrel fund scam. Jinggoy has already surrendered to the Philippine National Police (PNP). Last Friday, an arrest warrant was likewise issued against Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. also in connection with the pork barrel scam. He, too, surrendered to the PNP. Both Estrada and Revilla, as well as Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile, are facing graft and plunder charges in connection with the supposed scam. Enrile is a known stalwart of the United Nationalist Alliance, a party formed by the elder Estrada and Vice President Jejomar Binay. Lacierda, however, said they are not just going after critics of the Aquino administration. “It’s not true that we Read More …

JV Ejercito: No visits to Jinggoy for now

Citing their unresolved rift, Sen. JV Ejercito on Monday said he has no plans of visiting his half-brother, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, anytime soon at his detention center in Camp Crame. “Siguro in time,” Ejercito told GMA News TV’s “News To Go” in an interview. “Baka hindi pa niya ako gustong makita.” Estrada turned himself in to the police on Monday noon after the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division issued a warrant of arrest against him and several others in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. Estrada is charged with graft and plunder for allegedly pocketing P183.79 million in kickbacks from dealings with fake non-government organizations from 2004 to 2012. The rocky relationship between the two sons of former President and now Manila mayor Joseph Estrada became even more strained after Ejercito signed the Senate blue ribbon committee report on the pork barrel scam probe, which recommended the filing of plunder charges against Estrada and Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. Estrada has earlier admitted he was hurt by his half-brother’s decision to sign the report. Even though they are not on good terms, Ejercito expressed sadness over his half-brother’s predicament, saying he is aware how the pork barrel controversy has affected the senator’s family, “I’m very much concerned… lalo na para sa kanyang pamilya. Alam ko kung gaano kasakit ang pinagdadaanan nila ngayon,” he said. Estrada was previously detained together with his father at Fort Sto. Domingo in 2001 in connection with a plunder case involving their Read More …

After ‘adjustment period,’ PNP to enforce regulations on Revilla visitors

Lani visits Bong in Camp Crame. Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado and her children arrive at Camp Crame’s Custodial Center in Quezon City on Sunday, June 22, to visit detained Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. Revilla is one of three senators implicated in the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. GMA News Following what it called an adjustment period last weekend, the Philippine National Police will enforce the visitation limits for detained Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. starting this week. The PNP Custodial Center said Revilla’s visitors will now have to abide by the rules allowing visits only on Thursday and Sunday, radio dzBB’s Rodil Vega reported Monday. The report said the PNP stressed the rules apply to all detainees, including Revilla, who was detained at the PNP Custodial Center after he surrendered to the Sandiganbayan last Friday. Revilla surrendered after the anti-graft court issued a warrant for his arrest over graft and plunder charges related to the P10-billion pork barrel scam. Revilla and his co-accused allegedly received P224.5 million in kickbacks from 2006 to 2010 for funding the ghost projects of alleged pork barrel scam brains Janet Lim Napoles’ non-government organizations. The dzBB report said the PNP was relatively “lax” in allowing visitors to Revilla last weekend because it considered that time a period of adjustment. Last weekend, Revilla’s family was allowed to visit him Friday and Saturday, and stay beyond 3 p.m. Sunday. Only lawyers, spiritual advisers and doctors have access to Revilla at any time of the week. Relatives Read More …

(Updated 9:12 a.m.) Sen. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada on Monday said he has packed his clothes in preparation for his looming arrest and detention over charges related to the P10-billion pork barrel scam. Estrada will surrender quietly at Camp Crame if an arrest warrant is issued against him by the Sandiganbayan, radio dzBB’s Nimfa Ravelo reported earlier Monday. In an interview on dzBB radio Monday, Estrada also thanked his supporters for their continued trust in him, and vowed to prove his innocence. “Sa nagmamahal sa amin, sa aming pamilya, unang-una, nais ko kayong pasalamatan sa suporta sa amin. Asahan ninyo patutunayan muli ang kasong pinagkasasangkutan ko ay wala po akong kasalanan,” he said. When asked what he had packed inside his bags in preparation for his possible detention, he answered, “personal clothes.” But when asked if he also included insecticide spray in his bags—a reference to Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.’s comments of rats and cockroaches in his detention cell—Estrada merely laughed.  On the other hand, he said he is 101 percent sure he will be acquitted because he is innocent. Estrada is one of three senators linked to the multibillion-peso scam. The others are Senate minority leader Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. Estrada has been accused of pocketing P183.79 million in kickbacks from dealings with fake NGOs from 2004 to 2012.    The said NGOs were allegedly put up by businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, who is being tagged as the mastermind of the scam. Stopping overfishing in PH? There’s an app for that now

• Fishackathon aimed for app that eases fishing licensing and monitoring processes • Winning Berkeley-based team to go to PH to meet with fisherfolk, researchers, local officials Winning Berkeley-based fishackathon team spent two-day design time at Monterey Bay Aquarium. PHOTO BY ISHA DANDAVATE NEW YORK, New York — How do you solve overfishing in the Philippines, one of the top 10 producers of fish worldwide? It looks like there’s an app for that now. It started at 10 p.m. on June 13. Forty hours of “fishackathon” later (in Boston, Baltimore, Miami, even Silicon Valley), a winner emerged: Hackers from the University of Berkeley-School of Information came up with a tool called Fish DB. The tool is a three-pronged approach to the problem — for the “ideal world,” a browser-based mobile app for fishermen to submit registration and license applications; for the “real world,” the use of SMS text messages, which does not require Internet access; lastly, a web app for government employees to process the submissions. The mobile app was designed to be as usable as possible for even fishers with marginal literacy — many of the menu options include pictures or diagrams to supplement the textual descriptions. Yes, fishers will need a mobile phone. To use the app, fishers register their boats, get fishing licenses and report any illegal fishing activity that they observe. It serves both fishers who need to submit registrations and the government staff who process them. The winning team from Berkeley received the grand prize Read More …
