In the WWII Veterans meeting with former President Ramos they raised their difficulties in claiming their pension benefits from the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) due to the process of confirming yearly that they are alive.  They also voiced their concerns over denied lump sums in the US and problems with Philippine pensions. Former President Ramos concluded a meeting with the US Veterans Affairs over inefficiency in serving veterans.  He strongly urged Filipino-American WWII veterans and their advocates to continue lobbying to include Medical Portability Act that would allow US medical recipients to use their government-subsidized health benefits in the Philippines.

President Benigno S. Aquino III welcomes Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited Board of Directors, headed by group chairman David Gonski and group chief executive officer Michael Smith, during the courtesy call at the President’s Hall Receiving Area of the Malacañan Palace on Friday (May 30). (MNS photo) PHILADELPHIA – More investors from the United States are now seriously considering doing business in the Philippines after hearing leading Filipino private sector figures talk about a country brimming with numerous investment opportunities. “A growing number of American investors are convinced that with its unprecedented economic growth, the Philippines will be a good place for their investments,” Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. said at the end of a successful week-long private sector-led investment roadshow that visited Houston, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Ambassador Cuisia said investors heard the positive projection made by noted economist Dr. Bernardo Villegas of the University of Asia and the Pacific, who led the private sector delegation from Manila that participated in the 3rd Philippine Investment Roadshow. In his presentations, Dr. Villegas, who is also known as the “Prophet of Boom,” described the Philippine economy as being at a “tipping point,” citing the positive investment climate in the Philippines, which he predicts to grow up to 15 percent in the next 10 years. “The 2014 roadshow could not have been scheduled at a better time, now that the Philippines is considered one of the best performing economies in Asia,” Dr. Villegas said. “The Philippines is now regarded as an investment haven Read More …

PHL among happiest countries in the world – Gallup poll

The series of disasters that shook the county in 2013 were described as “successive and overlapping” and left billions of dollars in damages and thousands of families  grieving because of the loss of loved ones. Typhoon Yolanda, easily the most disastrous calamity of the year, may go down in history as the worst natural disaster and the strongest typhoon in history to make a landfall has left devastations that will take years to recover from and billions of pesos to return victims to normalcy, if it were ever possible. The losses left deep emotional wounds that would take years to heal. Typhoon Santi might have already escaped the memories of many ranks second which “tore into the country’s northeast east in the last quarter of last years and left its mark”. It was not as widely reported as Typhoon Yolanda because the earthquake that hit the province of Bohol, the number 5 on the list, overshadowed it. Then came Labuyo, which was overshadowed by Typhoon Maring , the fourth on the list, which wreaked havoc on the country’s already devastated agriculture and infrastructure sectors. Earthquakes are nothing new in the Philippines and certainly the Bohol earthquake was the most devastating in living memory to have damaged dozens of ancient heritage structures and not sparing even the famous Chocolate Hills. Then there was Typhoons Odette, the second most devastating next to Yolanda and Typhoon Vinta which battered Northern Luzon “just as the Filipinos everywhere were preparing for all Soul’s Day.” Despite Read More …

U.S.A. and Canadian permanent residence applications can be filed at same time

By Atty. Henry Moyal MOYAL & MOYAL Canadian Immigration Lawyers (screenshot courtesy of www.moyal.com) Q. I live in New York and I have visited Canada several times. I am in the process of applying for my USA greencard but I am worried that it may take too long leaving me with nothing at the end. Can I apply for Canadian permanent residence at the same time as my pending greencard application? A. Yes, there is nothing in the law that stipulates that you cannot apply for permanent residence in Canada if you have a pending immigration case in another country. Regarding the timing, it is something you will need to decide for yourself. Meaning, on average a permanent resident application takes approximately 12 months. I do not have the specifics of your greencard case. If you obtain Canadian residence and the greencard application is still pending you will need to find out from the USA immigration authorities what will happen to the application. Q. I arrived in Canada a few weeks ago. I consider myself to be highly educated and an asset to any company. I am planning to relocate to Canada and I have been in contact with some companies who are interested in hiring me. They have stated that they will employ me but only if I have a work permit or if I am a permanent resident of Canada. On the other hand, my elderly aunt requires a full time caregiver and some people have told me Read More …

Seized counterfeit goods surge 334% in Jan-Apr

MANILA, Philippines – Counterfeit items seized by the government surged 334 percent in the January to April period compared to the same period a year ago, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) said. Data from the IPOPHL showed counterfeit goods confiscated by the government amounted to P6.572 billion as of end-April, well-above the P1.515 billion in the same period last year. The IPOPHL attributed the higher amount to operations of the IP rights enforcement agencies particularly the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC). “The same joint NBI-BOC operations yielded the increases,” IPOPHL director general Ricardo Blancaflor said in a text message yesterday. For the rest of the year, the IPOPHL is upbeat the value of seized pirated or counterfeit items would continue to rise. “The operations will continue at present levels,” he said. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “There will be more joint cooperations,” he added. Aside from the NBI and BOC, other agencies part of the National Committee on IP Rights (NCIPR) which is authorize to visit business establishments with IP violations and confiscate counterfeit items are the Philippine National Police, Optical Media Board and Food and Drug Administration. Blancaflor is confident the value of goods seized by the NCIPR this year could beat last year’s total of P7.76 billion. He is also hopeful this year’s total could match the record-high set in 2011. Counterfeit items seized by the government reached an all-time high of P8.3 billion in Read More …
