Fil-Am girl band steadily shaping its immij

Immij from left to right: Lyn, Kris and Mei CONTRIBUTED PHOTO SAN FRANCISCO, California — The all-girl R&B/pop singing group immij, composed  of Kris Cayabyab, Lyn Ginelsa and Mei Antonio, has commanded a loyal and still growing following since the band began in 2000. Drawing inspiration from music icons such as Destiny’s Child, EnVogue and Deborah Cox to Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry, the group has grown up together, performed in a variety of shows, concerts and international stages and released two albums to date, creating a brand — all while individually pursuing a college education. From an early age, the girls shared similar interests in the performing arts and loved to dance, watch musicals and play the piano.  The group’s official debut might have been in 2000, but they had been singing together long before in a children’s church choir. The trio grew up singing and never thought they would pursue it farther than singing at church. Today they serve up helpings of R&B, pop, gospel, dance and ballads to adoring fans. Mei said, “I developed an interest in singing at a very young age because my mom would make me sing when I was a little kid.  At that time, I hated it but have grown to love it.” Similarly Kris said, “Just like Mei, I started singing at a very young age. I recorded my first song, ‘Christmas Alphabet’ at two years old on my mom’s cassette tape recorder.” They formed immij, which they created Read More …

Filipino in LA faces life for killing his wife

Tomas Infante faces 25 years to life form killing his wife SAN FRANCISCO, California — A Los Angeles jury has found a Filipino man guilty of killing his wife and leaving the body in the trunk of her car, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. Deputy District Attorney Miriam Avalos on Wednesday, June 18 said the jury deliberated for about two hours and found Tomas Rodriguez Infante, 62, guilty of first-degree murder for beating and stabbing his 57-year-old wife, Charito Tolentino. Avalos said Infante is scheduled back at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pomona before Judge Mike Camacho for sentencing.
Avalos said the defendant faces a maximum of 25 years to life in state prison. Prosecutors established that at the time of the killing, Infante was having an affair with another woman. When Infante’s girlfriend learned he was married, she broke up with him. An autopsy determined that the victim, Tolentino, had suffered three stab wounds to her neck and chest area, five lacerations on her head and multiple bruises on her head, face, hands and right forearm. Infante reported his wife missing on Jan. 12 and told authorities she had not returned from work, according to Lt. John Corina of the LA Country Sheriff’s homicide section. Hair Talk

Staying outdoors exposes our bodies to the harmful elements, and the same holds true even within the protective shell of a vehicle. Vulnerable parts of our physique such as our skin, hair, and eyes may remain exposed to harsh sunlight, wind, and pollution; and although we may not immediately feel its ill effects, these stresses pose cumulative damage to our bodies over time. Having said that, I would like to touch a subject that is seldom discussed when it comes to driving and commuting—hair damage. As vain as it may sound, it is a reality that for many people, further hair quality deterioration results as collateral damage from the daily commute. Of course some situations are more damaging than others—such as, say, driving your car with the top down; being part of the top-load of a jeepney (a regular occurrence in the provinces); hanging out at the upper level of an open-top tourist bus; or even just driving with only a glass moonroof over your head. But simple daily bad habits are already enough to pose collective damage to your hair…and so I decided to go get us some expert hair advice from a long-time top stylist and friend, Chastine Fitcher Isidro. Chastine has had a lengthy and remarkable career in hairstyling—he has gathered acclaim and highly specialized knowledge with regards to hair after pursuing studies in the United Kingdom. He studied in institutions such as the Toni&Guy Academy (UK), the Alan D Education Academy, and the Mahogany Hair Dressing Read More …

Jinggoy Estrada claims Aquino gov’t just ‘showing off’ in detaining ‘pork’ scam suspects

Senator Jinggoy Estrada arrives at the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City on Monday, June 30, for his arraignment over the plunder charges filed against him and businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles in connection with the alleged P10-B pork barrel scam. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Monday called the charges against him “rushed” in a bid by the administration to boast that it was able to detain senators charged over the pork barrel scam. After his arraignment before the Sandiganbayan on Monday, Estrada added that the charges against him were “politically motivated.” Estrada was reacting to the special prosecutor’s move to amend the charge sheets of the senators. The prosecutors eventually withdrew their motion to amend Estrada’s information when told the senator would be released. “The cracks are showing. The recent developments are indicative of the fact that the cases against us were rushed and railroaded and that due process of law was not observed…” Estrada said as he read his written statement after his arraignment. “Gusto kasi nilang magpasikat at ipakita sa taumbayan na kaya nilang magpakulong ng tatlong senador kaya naman naghain agad sila ng information kahit alam nilang wala naman talagang kaso at walang matibay na ebidensiya laban sa akin,” he added. (The administration wanted to show off and show to the nation that they are capable of detaining three senators, that’s why they filed the information immediately even though they know they don’t have a strong case and evidence against me.) Estrada added that because of Read More …

US, PHL troops ‘assault’ beach

SAN ANTONIO, Philippines (June 30, 2014) U.S. Marines assigned to1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, conduct a joint amphibious landing exercise with Philippine marines during Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Philippines 2014. In its 20th year, CARAT is an annual, bilateral exercise series with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the armed forces of nine partner nations. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Jerry Jimenez/Released) SAN ANTONIO (AFP) – More than 200 US and Filipino Marines launched a mock amphibious assault Monday on an enemy beachfront close to a disputed South China Sea outcrop. Amid driving rain and rough waves, five amphibious assault tanks roared off from a US destroyer anchored off Zambales province, about two hours drive northwest of Manila, and landed on the soggy beach peppered with imaginary foes. US Marines scanned the horizon on scopes mounted on assault rifles as they dramatically emerged from the hatch, while their Filipino counterparts took firing positions on the ground. Shots later rang out towards enemy positions in an assault that lasted about an hour. The drill was part of week-long, annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training that the United States bilaterally holds with Asian allies, including the Philippines, to boost maritime security. About 1,000 US and Filipino troops and five warships, including an American missile destroyer, took part in the training, which began last week. Philippine fleet commander Jaime Bernardino told reporters at the start of the war games last week that they were designed to Read More …

Revilla, Estrada suspension will have no effect on Senate work – Trillanes

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Tuesday said he supported the Office of the Ombudsman’ motion to have Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada suspended from the Senate over plunder charges filed against them before the Sandiganbayan. In an interview aired on GMA 7’s “24 Oras”, Trillanes reasoned that the law must always be upheld. Section Five of Republic Act 7080, or the AntI-Plunder Law, says that any public officers charged with plunder “shall be suspended from office. (And) Should he be convicted by final judgment, he shall lose all retirement or gratuity benefits under any law.” Trillanes also said that Revilla and Estrada’s possible suspension would have no effect on the Senate’s proceedings. “We still have a quorum. We can still pass treaties, so, hindi ito makakaapekto,” he explained. On Monday, the Ombudsman filed two separate motions before the Sandiganayan First Division and Fifth Division to have both Revilla and Estrada suspended for 90 days. If the motions are granted, both senators would be barred from filing bills, or from hearing any filed bills. Revilla is the current chairman of two Senate committees  – the committee on public services and the congressional oversight committee on Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. Estrada meanwhile is the chairman of the committee on labor, employment and human resources development and the congressional oversight committee on labor and employment. Both senators are currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame. Sandiganbayan’s decision Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto said Read More …

Hazing victim could've survived if injuries were reported sooner

Manila police release CCTV footage of hazing victim. CCTV footage provided to the Manila Police District by the One Archers Place condominium along Taft Avenue in Manila on Monday, June 30, shows alleged members of a fraternity dragging the body of hazing victim Guillo Servando, a student of DLSU-College of St. Benilde, out of a room on June 28. Servando was declared dead on arrival at a hospital from traumatic injuries. Danny Pata Experts believe that Guilo Servando could’ve survived his hazing if his emergency situation was reported to the authorities more quickly. “Pwedeng mabuhay yung taong ‘yun eh, kung ‘di nagdalawang isip na tumawag sa ‘min. Pwedeng segundo diyan importante ang isang buhay, pwede nating masalba,” Jesse Laurel, Patrol 117 Technical Supervisor, told GMA News’ “24 Oras” Tuesday. Servando, the latest in hazing-related deaths, was found unconscious at the 29th floor of One Archers Place on Taft Avenue last weekend. Bruises found on his legs and back by the Manila Police District’s homicide division bolstered suspicions that he was a victim of hazing.  According to the “24 Oras” report, the damage inflicted to the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde’s student released an excessive amount myoglobin into his bloodstream.  Myoglobin is a protein which the US National Library of Medicine reported can damage kidney cells, leading to acute renal failure and acute tubular necrosis.  Dr. Butch Beringuela, a surgeon, said: “Naaipon yung mga toxin sa katawan, hindi na na-fi-filter ng kidney, after the kidney injury, nagkakaroon ng kidney failure.” Read More …

Groups want special Sandiganbayan division to handle ‘pork’ cases

If it is working well in the high-profile Maguindanao massacre case, perhaps it can also work in the pork barrel scam cases now pending with the Sandiganbayan. This was the argument raised by two groups in their letter to the Supreme Court expressing support to the bid to create special courts that would specifically hear cases related to the alleged systematic misuse of Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). In a submission, the Alternative Law Groups (ALG) and the Transparency and Accountability Network (TAN) said the SC should designate a special division of the anti-graft court “in the interest of justice and due to compelling reasons.” “We humbly ask the Supreme Court to take judicial notice of the historic and unprecedented nature of the PDAF cases which are imbued with public interest, the transactions involved, the complexities of the issues, and the number of high-ranking government officials involved,” the groups said. The groups cited the four-year-old Maguindanao massacre trial to emphasize the significance of creating a special court to expedite court proceedings. The multiple murder trial stemmed from the November 23, 2009 killings of 58 people, including 32 journalists, by armed men allegedly led by the powerful Ampatuan clan in Maguindanao. The Regional Trial Court Branch 221 in Quezon City had earlier been turned into a special court to specifically handle Maguindanao massacre-related cases. Court proceedings are held twice a week for the entire day on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mondays, meanwhile, are reserved for hearing motions stemming from the case. Judge Read More …
