Photo by Robert Gonzaga SUBIC BAY FREEPORT, Philippines—Two American military ships carrying an undetermined number of troops arrived here on Thursday for a port visit and to replenish supplies, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) officials said. The USNS Richard Byrd and USNS Carl Brasher docked at the Alava Pier here between 8 and 10 a.m. Some of the civilian crew of the two ships were allowed to leave their ships but were not permitted to go outside this free port, an SBMA official, who asked not to be identified for not having been authorized to speak on the matter, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The official said all military troops, however, were confined in their ships. The ships will stay in the free port in the next three days, according to the official. The arrival of the US ships came as the American government rejected the request of the Philippine government to get custody of US Marine Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, the soldier charged with murder for the killing of transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude in an Olongapo City motel on Oct. 11. Pemberton is held in a detention facility supervised by the American and Philippine governments in the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Quezon City. Earlier, SBMA Chair Roberto Garcia said American military ships would resume port calls to this free port only after a major development in Pemberton’s case. Garcia said business owners in Olongapo City and the Read More …

Sandigan rejects recusal request of justices in Jinggoy cases

Senator Jinggoy Estrada leaves the residence of his father, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, in Greenhills, San Juan on Monday, June 23, to proceed to Camp Crame to surrender following the issuance of an arrest warrant against him and several others in connection with the alleged pork barrel scam. (MNS photo) MANILA, Dec 17 (Mabuhay) — The Sandiganbayan has unanimously refused the request for recusal of the three justices handling the graft and plunder cases of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang said Wednesday. Tang said the anti-graft court, in a special en banc session, did not find the “personal reasons” of the justices compelling enough to grant their request. While Tang refused to say what the reasons were, she did consent to say that it was not due to pressure of any kind related to their Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), or to threats to the lives of the justices. “Let me set the record straight. It has nothing to do with release of our SALN to the BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue), or any alleged bank account investigation of the AMLC (Anti-Money Laundering Council). There has never been any pressure from Malacañang either,” Tang told reporters. “I hope you will respect them, they wished for this to be confidential,” she added. In a one-page document submitted Monday to Tang, Justices Roland Jurado, Alexander Gesmundo and Ma. Theresa Dolores Estoesta requested to be relieved of handling Estrada’s case. Estrada, son of former President and now Manila Read More …

MRT gets failing grade from commuters in Sen. Poe’s survey

Vice President Jejomar Binay sprinkles holy water at the tomb of Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ) at the Manila North Cemetery on the occasion of the 10th death anniversary of the acknowledged Filipino movie king on Sunday (Dec.14, 2014). Also in photo are Senator Grace Poe and movie-TV actress Susan Roces (2nd from left). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Commuters gave the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) trains a failing grade in terms of maintenance works on the 15-year-old mass transport system. At a hearing of the Senate committee on public services on Wednesday, chairman Sen. Grace Poe presented an independent survey done by her office covering about a hundred daily commuters of MRT. Using the grading system of the University of the Philippines, the 13 stations of the MRT got an average grade of 4 or conditional failure. “Sa kabuohan ay bagsak po ang nakuhang grado ng MRT. Ang pinaka-dinadaing po ng mga commuter ay ang napakatagal na oras ng pagpila, marurumi at mabahong comfort rooms, hindi gumaganang escalators at elevators, at ang labis na siksikan sa loob ng bagon habang nag-bibiyahe,” Poe said of the survey results. The survey focused on queuing time, conditions of comfort rooms, conditions of elevators and escalators, ease of travel or comfort while riding the train, air conditioning system and total riding experience. In terms of waiting time in riding the train, majority of the commuters said it usually takes them 30 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to board the train. Read More …

Japan firms in PH seen expanding operations

MANILA, Philippines–Japanese firms operating in the Philippines are bullish of their prospects for next year as more than half of those recently polled by the Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro) have expressed their intention to further expand their businesses in the country. The latest survey of Jetro also showed that about 71 percent of the respondents expect to post a “surplus in their operating profits” in the Philippines this year. This was based on Jetro’s 2014 Survey on Business Conditions of Japanese-Affiliated Firms in Asia and Oceania, which was conducted between October and November this year. It covered 4,767 Japanese-affiliated firms operating in 20 countries and regions in Asia and Oceania, including the Philippines. In a statement, Jetro noted that the number of Japanese-affiliated firms in China that were planning to expand dropped below 50 percent for the first time since the survey began in 1998. In contrast, about 60 percent of the Japanese firms operating in the Asean said they would expand over the next one to two years. In countries like Cambodia, India and Bangladesh, there was expression of interest to expand business, marking a high response rate more than 70 percent. “The proportion in the Asean exceeded that of China in 2012, and since then, the difference has widened to 13.8 points. In the Philippines, the rate has risen to 58.7 percent since 2009. High response rates were seen in emerging countries such as Cambodia (79.5 percent), India (78.2 percent) and Bangladesh (71.1 percent). Survey results further Read More …

Holidazed for the holidays

The holidays. Images of shiny, happy people, laughing with their mouths open, cozily clutching wine glasses or swishing martinis. The table is set beautifully, whether it be glam or rustic, plates and silverware casually strewn about, pinecones and poinsettias, tinsel and glitter. The food is perfectly imperfect, charred ends of roasted potatoes, sauce sexily dripping off the sides of the casserole, a turkey so golden it looks like it came from a summer in the French Riviera. In this day and age of Instagram and Pinterest, it seems that everything has to be picture-perfect. Casually putting things together on a table in their usual chafing dishes does not seem to cut it anymore. The reality is that the holidays are more often than not “holi-daze” — everything going so fast, a stressful jumble of work, family and festivity. When we host at home, we either resort entirely to a caterer or end up looking like a frazzled mess trying to provide anything and everything under the sun, in our traditional over-the-top Filipino way of serving 10,000 things in a buffet. I love to entertain at home but there is nothing more unwelcoming than a stressed-out host. So for the holidays I am sharing with you my favorite secrets and armes-de-guerre for throwing the perfect holiday cocktail with ease. • Mix and mingle. Forgo the usual dinner buffet and sit-down table settings for a more relaxed, heavy-cocktail vibe. It gets people moving around, talking and chatting. It creates energy. Make sure Read More …

DOE plans website posting weekly pump prices of oil firms

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Energy (DOE) is urging oil players to provide weekly prices for each of their respective gasoline stations nationwide, according to a draft circular now being circulated among local petroleum companies. The idea is to put the prices in a DOE-run website so consumers can see which gasoline station offers the lowest prices in a given period.  “We are experimenting with this. All these companies have pump prices. The idea is every time they change, they have to inform us and automatically without any intervention, we will put it on the website,” Energy Secretary Carlos Petilla  said  yesterday. He stressed that nothing is final yet as the department is still studying the plan.  “We want to be transparent and we are giving consumers and motorists a choice. Let’s say you are five kilometers from a gasoline station and you want to know if prices are cheap there or in another station….” Petilla said. He said the scheme is not new because as it is now, oil firms provide the DOE their respective weekly prices. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “But it would be better if there is a website containing information on all gasoline stations,” he said. Energy Undersecretary Zenaida Monsada said it would be a tedious process but the end result is transparency for consumers. “We will have a dry run in Metro Manila but we have to talk to the dealers first. This is about empowering motorists,” she said. Read More …

Export growth seen at 10-11%

MANILA, Philippines – The country’s total exports are seen to grow by 10 to 11 percent this year and next year to be supported by the rebound of the electronics sector and continued growth of services exports, a trade official said. “I think our overall (exports) growth will be 10 to 11 percent, when you get to the bottom of it, and that is my forecast for next year as well,” Trade Undersecretary Ponciano Manalo Jr. told reporters. He noted that merchandise exports are expected to grow by eight to nine percent even as demand from Japan, the country’s top destination for merchandise exports, may slow down amid economic recession there. The growth in merchandise exports would be driven by the recovery of the electronics sector. Manalo said exports of electronics products are seen to grow by seven percent this year and rise by six to eight percent next year, citing the positive outlook of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Inc. (SEIPI). Earlier, the SEIPI said it sees electronic exports rising by five to eight percent this year from 2013’s $21.823 billion due to strong global demand. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “I think the electronics sector will continue to get back on its feet. Our task and our job is to go into higher value electronics,” Manalo said. Apart from electronics, other merchandise goods seen to help drive the growth this year and next year are agricultural products, minerals such as nickel Read More …
